No one is calling it into question, except for the legacy media trying to stay relevant.
More money is generated in Australia and world wide via TV broadcasting rights, then people can ever fit into the stadium…

even if the stadium was at capacity, more people in Australia , let alone the world, will be watching via TV - which is why TV broadcasting is more important then the legacy media’s perceived “crowd figures being low so cricket is in trouble”

I’ve done all the going to cricket at the SCG, MCG, etc…
I’d now much rather watch it on TV…
I pay for Kayo, which flows on to CA in terms of them buying the broadcasting rights…

they make an arse load via TV rights - more then they could ever make by people “going to the ground”

the legacy media need to be ignored… their constant whinging and drumming up complaints against non issues is quite funny.

Unfortunate timing for Big Bash’s ratings / image…

Thought it was great by 7 to have the 3rd umpire explain their decision on the broadcast during a small break in play, especially since it was the world feed too.

Yes I was going to say likewise.

Not really followed the BBL this season, but has 7 done any offtube coverage this year or have they been calling the matches from the ground ?

I could be wrong but I think they have done both.

Tonight’s Sixers v Stars was called from the ground. As mentioned above, Chris Green provided expert comments, and sat alongside Alister Nicholson and Lisa Sthalekar in the commentary box.

I think they have been at the ground for almost all games so far.

Although I don’t think they are in Perth tonight since Callum Ferguson was at the MCG today and none of the commentators were at ground level for any part of the coverage expect Perth based Ryan Daniel

Except the crowd numbers aren’t a ‘non-issue’, they’re something that should be troubling cricket administrators. There’s no doubt that Pakistan isn’t a particularly strong drawcard in terms of interest, but for three days of attendance in Perth to be almost surpassed in one day’s attendance in Melbourne isn’t a great look for the game.

It could be argued that the shift to Seven/Fox as domestic broadcasters and the subsequent greater shift toward paid-for content (ie behind Fox’s paywall) is hurting the game in terms of supporters.

This exactly but no one wants to admit it and then go and extend with the existing broadcasters instead of 10/P+

Swapping one paywall (Fox) for another (P+) doesn’t solve the issue.

The dwindling crowd numbers for Test Cricket, which is still largely available on FTA, is a huge concern. It is also noticeable at the grassroots - cricket clubs are struggling to field teams as kids tend to drop the sport once they turn 18/finish high school.

Agree with this and cricket internationally has a major problem when only India, England, South Africa and maybe NZ are seen as draw cards for test series.

However, the big crowds for the Scorchers also pose another question…there’s clearly a market for T20 cricket at Optus but what about tests. Perhaps it’s not the stadium for it.

On the paywall note, it’s clear that CA isn’t going to get the money it desires from the deal without broadcasters being able to implement some sort of paywall.
