Seven does have rights to T20 matches which are part of upcoming Commonwealth Games. Not sure if it will televise the women’s T20 tri-series in Ireland though. (It will feature Ireland, Australia and Pakistan and will be held in mid-July as a warm-up for the Comm Games)
Isn’t there also some mens T20 this coming summer?
Yeah, but those matches will only be on Fox Cricket.
Ok thanks
Hmmmm… the tri series will either be a late deal on Fox (Kayo Freebies suck off) or will just be livestreamed on YouTube.
Seven have taken CA to court over breaches of the rights agreement.
Why anyone wants to deal with litigious network is beyond me. They sign up and then they sue crying foul. They signed this rubbish rights deal so suck it up.
Reminds me when the cried and cried to the federal court in 2000 when they sued every media company in the country over losing the AFL rights.
This is a quote:
Seven West Media files court proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia against Cricket Australia in relation to multiple quality and standard breaches of a media rights agreement between the two parties.
The media company will seek both a court declaration that Seven is entitled to terminate the MRA on the basis of material contract breaches by CA which were not remedied; and damages arising out of past breaches.
Seven previously obtained preliminary discovery proceedings in the Federal Court relating to the claims.
Seven’s intention is to terminate the MRA, conditional on the Federal Court granting a
declaration that Seven is entitled to do so.
“Seven will continue to perform its obligations under the MRA (in terms of telecasting Tests and BBL etc.) until terminated,” the company says in a statement to the ASX.
The organisation says it has pursued the informal dispute resolution procedure under the MRA but the procedure failed to resolve the dispute.
The Seven Network is the free-to-air broadcaster of Cricket Australia.
To be fair, the current management under Warburton have been making a fuss about this whole debacle ever since they’ve swooped and this deal was signed under that buffoon Worner, so whilst they don’t have much grounds to complain about, you can see why management have been desperate to be rid of cricket.
I agree with your overall point.
Seven West Media release to ASX
Seven institutes court proceedings against Cricket Australia
Seven West Media Limited (ASX: SWM) through its subsidiary Seven Network (Operations) Limited (Seven) has filed court proceedings in the Federal Court of Australia against Cricket Australia (CA) in relation to multiple quality and standard breaches by CA of Seven’s Media Rights Agreement with CA (MRA).The SWM proceedings will seek both:
- a court declaration that Seven is entitled to terminate the MRA on the basis of material
contract breaches by CA which were not remedied; and- damages arising out of past breaches.
Seven previously obtained preliminary discovery proceedings in the Federal Court relating to the claims.
Seven’s intention is to terminate the MRA, conditional on the Federal Court granting a declaration that Seven is entitled to do so. Seven has the right to waive this condition. The damages action is not conditional.
Seven will continue to perform its obligations under the MRA (in terms of telecasting Tests and BBL etc.) until terminated.
Seven has pursued the informal dispute resolution procedure under the MRA but the procedure failed to resolve the dispute. This release has been authorised to be given to the ASX by the Board of Directors of SWM
Sounds to me like 7 paid too much for cricket and aren’t getting Roi… now wants out.
Is the 2023/24 the last cricket season for Seven?
Someone needs money to fund AFL rights….
CA probably wishes they signed up with the “bottom feeders” now.
It was reported in 3AW news that whilst there are two summers left to run on Seven’s media rights agreement, this summer isn’t expected to be impacted by a termination of rights because of the time it may take for the court proceedings to be heard.
Media release from Cricket Australia
Cricket Australia (CA) is extremely disappointed that our broadcast partner, the Seven Network, has commenced legal proceedings against CA in relation to recent COVID-impacted cricket seasons.
CA delivered two very successful cricket seasons in 2020-21 and 2021-22, including every WBBL and BBL game (a total of 240 games over two seasons) and highly acclaimed international schedules, despite the enormous challenges presented by the global pandemic.
In the circumstances, CA is astonished that Seven has brought this unwarranted action which will be strenuously defended.
CA remains enormously proud of the efforts of the Australian Cricket family including players, match officials, sponsors, stadium operators, host governments, staff and volunteers whose hard work, dedication and expertise allowed us to deliver two exceptional cricket seasons in unprecedented circumstances.
We look forward to another hugely entertaining summer, including hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as defending champions, welcoming a record six international touring teams to Australia, as well as the eighth and twelfth editions of WBBL and BBL respectively.
One wonders if seven take any responsibility for the quality of its coverage that has contributed to its poor performance.
They also underestimated the interest in cricket being diluted over free to air and pay. The BBL would’ve attracted much more of a premium if it was exclusive on free to air.
These people that run 7 are quite pathetic.
Not a great look from Seven to attempt this nonsense again and broadcast partners will likely be wary of what signing up with them might mean.
Whats point in them doing it? Covid happed so blame Cricket Austraila?
And you can forget Seven bidding for future overseas tours of Australian cricket team (especially the 2027 Ashes series in England - Nine will show the 2023 series).
Don’t nine have the rights to the next two? That was signed off last year?
2023 only. The rights for ECB cricket are also up for grabs at the end of next UK summer.
