Seven Cricket Coverage

If Seven’s contract was terminated, I could see Nine agreeing to a new deal with CA, but under the condition it works around their current TA contract (i.e.) clashes in January, particularly mid-Jan (which would make things very difficult) - which is what caused Seven to offload 2019 to Nine a year early.

And we know ViacomCBS/10’s view on sports rights.

So agree with some here, that Seven and CA really need to find a resolution and push forward together.

I can’t see 10 taking rights shared with fox and they’re making more money versus outlay on I’m a celebrity got 4 weeks. More bang for buck.

They’d only sign if it had a full suite of exclusive rights.

This, and while different again, Nine would hold a similar view with the tennis (which I think took Nine to No. 1 for summer last year in terms of share just from those two weeks alone).

Value/bang for your buck/exclusivity/prime time/not posting a loss/coupled with strong ratings is what they’re all really after.

Both interesting points; would Ten or Nine be interested in a deal with Fox.

Nine with Stan sport would want to get it exclusive to gain viewership for Stan and build their own brand.

If we go back to when Nine had CA rights, the tests were wrapped up after the New Year Sydney test, which means Nine could have cricket and tennis and it wouldn’t interfere.

The question is, would nine also want what they started, the ODI games? In which you could easily play 5 between the Sydney test and the Aus Open starting. It would just be a work around in the BBL fixture.

Ten is based on their parent company in the UK now, channel 5. Which didn’t contest the Cricket rights back in 2018/19. When they were the FTA holders for UK cricket. The model for Viacom isn’t a sport one. As much as people want 10 to be sport, cause they do it so well, I just can’t see it.

Seven and CA have plenty to work out, next summer with the Ashes, it’s worth holding on to cricket rights, however the 2 summers after the ashes, well they could be very poor test seasons with the West Indian’s, Sir Lanka and South Africa to tour.

Viacom has the money to pay for cricket and cricket fans across the country want the cricket on 10

I couldn’t give a stuff what channel it’s on as long as internationals are on free to air.

Yes they have the money, but their brand and focus isn’t sport, it’s 100% entertainment.

I saw channel 5 go the same way in the UK. It was similar to Ten, awesome for sport and than Viacom took over and sport was pushed aside.

This is why the poms should never have taken over 10

That I 100% agree with!! I would have really enjoyed to see CBS continue down the path they were going, I think it would have kept Nine, Seven and Fox sports very honest.

The Viacom mob don’t understand how sport is such a draw card here in Australia.

If anything 5 are in the process of expanding their sports offerings, they recently added NFL, have a decent amount of rugby union, some motorsports, a lot of boxing and more.

I’d think that looks pretty competitive for the standards of sport on UK FTA.

were they pre Viacom or currently. If its currently than Viacom still see value in sport

ViacomCBS/10 would be looking for the cheapest deals they can, otherwise, they won’t bother.

The NBL would be a good one, as the NBL produce it all themselves (albeit on the cheap, they only send one person to each arena, and it’s annoying plug after annoying plug for the league’s sponsors). No need to employ anyone on 10’s side if they can avoid it.

Viacom will see the value in premium content, and not see sport as better or worse than any other content they could acquire.

That a lot of sport content is used on 5spike - a channel probably analogous to 7mate - shows that off. Sport is a show to fill a schedule.

So while I don’t see value in takes that assume everything Channel 5 is is what 10 will become - my takeaway is this - no halo sports rights, no loss leaders. That suits how people watch TV now - yes, it’s a chance to promote your other content to viewers who might not otherwise watch the network, but you can’t spend millions over the value of sports rights for that.

Seven might well be learning that lesson now, that they can’t be a profitable network if they are getting sports rights by pricing the other networks out.

I think we have hit peak sports rights deal, for all sports. It might stabilise for some, but the rest will fall dramatically.

2021 BBL finals schedule

So the Sixers lose their home ground advantage because of WA’s hard border closure toward NSW (WA just removed Greater Brisbane from hotspot list a few days ago), while the Thunder play at their second home in the Knockout. Playing in Canberra means either the Sixers or the Thunder will be able to travel freely to Perth to face the Scorchers.
At least this time, Sixers and Thunder fans can travel from Sydney to Canberra to see their teams in action, without needing to declare their travel or quarantine.
The Sixers have to win the Qualifier in order to host the grand final, which will also be the first and only BBL match in Sydney this season.

What are you assuming?

Is that confirmed?

According to this article at CA website:

The Thunder and Sixers have nominated Canberra’s Manuka Oval as their preferred venue to host finals in the first week, given the limitations around travel for teams in and out Sydney due to current state border restrictions.

The NSW-ACT border is open, though, so fans prepared to make the trek can still get tickets.

There’s a chance Sydney could host a final next week – either the Final if the Sixers win through to host that, or the Challenger final – but that decision has been delayed. A CA release said officials would continue to monitor the ongoing public health situation and related border impacts before making a decision. So watch this space.
