Would save a few dollars on flights - even put him and Bruce together, and have Soda on boundary.
I would argue that’s a different circumstance though considering Sampson left Nine to become one of the two faces (alongside Matty Jones) of the then-new Fox League channel - an upgrade on her role at Nine.
Interesting. Phil Rothfield published Sydney AFL TV ratings in his Saint Sinner Shoosh column the past 24 hours, but paywalled. Unsure if he was given data for the Prelim or was referring to season average or something. Apparently they’re not good “numbers the AFL won’t want to talk about”. Unless it’s his opinion. Could possibly have been fed by an insider at Nine or NRL too.
Yep - they also give BT/JB heaps for having two personas “Seven BT/JB and Triple M BT/JB”, often asking which one is turning up today
FTA and Seven has some gravitas, look at your Bruce McAvaney and Dennis Cometti, they wouldn’t put up with a lot of that Triple M crap, despite what BT or JB have been trying to flow into TV since especially 2017
I reckon it made up to back what was a pretty crap attempt at a hit on the sport from Rothfield:
AFL has an average TV audience on Channel 7 in Sydney of just 23,853.
That said, the Giants continue to struggle to get a foothold while the Swans support has taken off despite on-field success
Different yes - but I think the initial post around “exposure” is misguided. I don’t believe that drives a former player or commentator or presenter - the pay packet might or colleagues or the role or the like.
Wonder what article he’ll write now, that not only have the Sydney Swans made the GF, but also the Brisbane Lions and all the talk the past 23 hours… Silence today at least.
He’ll find something - Buzz doesn’t pass up many chances to try and sink the boot into the AFL
I don’t mean this in a critical or rude way, but you don’t live in Australia, right? Perhaps you need to be here to understand the feeling on the ground. Yes, pay packet and colleagues is very high on the list, but I definitely believe that the AFL media is full of egos who are concerned with getting their face on the main channel, trying to make it to the top jobs on FTA networks etc.
You think this is behavour that is unique to Australia (and possibly the AFL)?
EDIT: @OnAir doesn’t need me defending his honour, but as someone who has known him for a considerable period of time now I can tell you that he has a lot greater insight on this topic than you realise
Sure, there are egos at play. But if we take that forward the theory ceases next year when Fox mount their own coverage - as it did when Fox took over cricket and rugby league.
Adam Gilchrist isn’t thinking about ‘exposure’ by remaining at Fox Cricket - he’s one of the greatest players to play the game, who does he need to be exposed to? Same for Cooper Cronk etc with league.
Might be getting off topic, but just on this, I do feel he’s different at Fox Sports vs Ten. While he chose Foxtel and is now loyal to them, doing a stellar job leading on-air, I do think of the broad regular and casual FTA core base who no longer can access his insights and TV skills. Same for Anthony Hudson but a bit different not having played Australian Rules, Rex Hunt’s 3AW protegé in the 90s, turned Seven and then star Ten caller, covering multiple Grand Finals even before the 2010s and iconic lines. He chose Foxtel after 2011 and the AFL’s core (or until Kayo core) audience never got to hear him outside a pay wall again, except on SEN and now back at 3AW radio. This might sound convoluted, but hopefully you know what I’m getting at. And those are just two.
They will (unsurprisingly) always push the data that gives them the best figures

A talented singer, guitarist and author, the proud Eastern Arrernte and Gurindji man has won critical acclaim across the country and boasts a host of accolades including multiple ARIA Awards, NIMA Awards, Top 5 ARIA-charting albums and an ARIA-certified Gold record in Blackbird.
Sultan has sold-out countless shows across the country and has toured extensively with a host of fellow music icons, including Bruce Springsteen, Midnight Oil and Vance Joy.
AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said it was great to have a talented Australian artist perform at one of the game’s most prestigious events.
“We’re thrilled to have Dan perform at this year’s Brownlow Medal count. Dan is one of the country’s most accomplished artists and we’re excited to have him perform as we celebrate the 2024 Toyota AFL Season,” Mr Dillon said.
Performing his newly released single ‘Do You See Me’ for athletes at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, Sultan said he was looking forward to performing at the AFL’s night of nights.
“The band and I are excited to be performing at the Brownlow. Personally, I’m pleased that a life dedicated to my beloved Saints has finally brought me to football’s night of nights. It’s an honour and it will be a great night,” Mr Sultan said.
Dan Sultan’s performance will be broadcast exclusive, live and free from 7.30pm AEST on Channel 7, 7mate, and 7plus across all devices.
Most loved?? Really??? Never heard of him!!
That and Nine won’t hire him because he can’t string a sentence together.
You say that as if they didn’t go out and hire Paul Gallen ![]()
