Nah compared to Bounce, this was way better. They didn’t even start the show until after the Saint’s team song during which they immediately went to the break afterwards. The show technically commenced after that.
According to the Herald Sun, due to the commentator shortage with James Brayshaw in London for the World Test Championship, and Luke Darcy attending a Western Bulldogs hall of fame night, Basil Zempilas will return to the commentary box to call Fremantle and Richmond on Saturday night at Optus Stadium.
so instead of Hamish & Darcy who do normal Saturday Night, It will be Basil & probably Nicholson? That might mean Sunday night will be Bennett and Darcy
I think this might be the first time he has called a match since before COVID? Though I do know when the WA hub (wherein two teams spent three weeks in the state, playing each other then the two WA clubs) was in operation in 2020, he was a boundary rider rather than a match caller.
There must be other commentators around?
It’s a shame they couldn’t get Dennis out of the box for one night. Was a treat having him on Triple M after he finished up at Ch7
Just wondering, has 7 ever paired Jason Bennett & Alister Nicholson for a match?
IMO Bennett is 7’s best & Nicholson is possibly 2 if not 3rd. But I don’t think they have called a match together. Is it because their calling styles aren’t complementary?
From memory
•Bennett has paired with BT, Darcy & Hamish
•Nicholson has paired with Hamish (a lot) & maybe Darcy.
The 9th and final slider for Big Breeze 9 next Monday is Shaun Burgoyne.
update
Looks like Seven have decided not to bother airing tonight’s Pre Game (Frem v Rich) in Adelaide, due to channel availability with clashes (AFL, news and cricket all at 6pm as well) - they could’ve just done 7flix (been used before) but maybe felt minimal to no audience for that there and/or didn’t want to disrupt 7flix’s network play-out (Saturdays usually the channel’s best performing night).
–
Also, Post Game (same match) will switch to 7mate in Melbourne and Adelaide around 10:20pm est, so cricket in those markets goes to main channel earlier (essentially start of S2 post Lunch).
There’s going to be a lot of “channel changes” from 6:30pm est across Australia tonight in various markets at various times for various programs! @TV.Cynic
Basil & Nicholson the main callers in Perth
Seven promoting a so called top of the table clash on Monday although Port Adelaide are second place and were before they played their game last night… #Vicbias
1 v 3 is still top of the table. Top 4 clash would be appropriate but you can still call it top of the table
True and I’d say most including myself would use such phrase, however I guess technically “top of the table” would refer to the top team(s) on the ladder (i.e.) 1 and 2.
New logo for the very rare “Sunday Night Football”? It’s got yellow and blue!
–
Also, the “next up” promo in the last ad break of news was replaced by a pre-recorded one from the AFL production with caller Luke Darcy outside the MCG and a super (as seen before other telecasts).
–
Weekend sport presenter Andrew McCormack (filling-in for Abbey Gelmi on maternity leave) also referenced tonight’s sport fest at the end of sport, obviously mentioning footy and cricket on their own network and omitting tennis on a rival.

Bruce Abernethy in Adelaide did the exact same thing.
Darcy and Bennett called the game tonight.
Bennett was mighty impressive tonight, great occasion for him, also saw that expressed online, however saw a couple criticising (seemingly wanting a more profile name like JB or BT they suggested). Not sure Darcy was the right selection tonight though.
IMO he is their best commentator because he knows when to let the game or crowd tell the story so he doesn’t talk or yell all the time. When he called games with Hamish or BT, he actually lifts their commentary as well
But it feels like he has taken a backseat this year? only calling Sunday afternoon games while last year he did almost all Thursday Nights and some other games.
