Seven AFL Coverage (2016-24 seasons)

To be honest, the show (which first ep runs for 8 minutes) is probably better suited for the AFL’s digital platforms rather than Seven.

No but if Seven had picked it up, they would have been able to make it in the style of ‘Interview’ or similar. AFL Media is mostly video calls, low quality production style programs before COVID-19 anyway.

I think not airing the front bar was a real missed opportunity. But I think sevens major issue is cash and budget. They have over committed with their sports. I am sure 7 are talking to cricket Australia about this upcoming season.

And what would they be saying to cricket Australia? Give us less games then we have now? :joy:

Nine need to air those shows, to stay relevant to AFL and local viewers as they don’t have rights (been the case since 2007).

Seven don’t really need any shows, but choose to in addition to having coverage digits.

10 don’t seem to care, though did air Before The Game in 2012 and 2013 even though they’d lost coverage rights.

I think they would be seriously asking about the big bash. Without the crowd it will seriously impact the theatre it creates for television. Without international stars it will create less draw for viewers as well. I think they would be asking whether Big Bash can be cancelled or the price be renegotiated. They would be crazy not to.

I think its also a case of how well they rate. I guess Nine is in a better position than 7 is financially and happy to continue the programs because they rate well. I don’t get The Front Bar. It would have been the perfect show to continue during Lockdown - even rename it the Home Bar for some fun.

are Crocmedia productions. For Nine, it’s decent filler

Either that or jump out of their deal and save their bucks. But that’s a discussion for another topic.

I’ve tried to watch Footy WA a few times, I wouldn’t call it decent anything.
The production quality is below what I would expect from community TV.
It comes across as a very cheep program just to fill a quota.

For the first time this year?

Second - it was broadcast on 23 March - I believe the next week’s edition didn’t make it to air but not sure.

Statement from James Warburton, Managing Director and CEO of Seven West Media, following the AFL’s press conference.

The Seven Network today welcomes the announcement from the Australian Football League of its 2020 season relaunch following the COVID-19 shutdown and return-to-play date of Thursday 11 June.

Commenting, Managing Director and CEO of Seven West Media, James Warburton, said: “We can’t wait to bring the footy back to the fans. Seven has been a supportive partner to the AFL to get the season going and provided a range of options for not only 2020 but certainty until the end of 2024.”

Any idea what the season looks like yet?
Rounds? Same days/nights of play?
I’m not an AFL fan, just curious.

I didn’t realise the broadcast deal had extended to 2024

Seven is still in talks with the AFL to extend the current broadcast deal to 2024.

I’ll bet $7 that after the backlash to it in their first match, the fake crowd noise will be gone the next one.
