How To Ban A Gun In 28 Days

Monday 22 April at 8.45pm

VICE News Tonight goes behind the scenes of New Zealand’s race to reform its gun laws in How To Ban A Gun In 28 Days.

Less than a month on from the mosque attacks in Christchurch on 15 March, the New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has unveiled The Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Bill, which aims to outlaw almost all semi-automatic and military-style weapons, and a host of gun accessories and parts. The bill calls for a sweeping overhaul of the country’s gun laws, with more change still on the way.

VICE News Tonight ’s special documentary How To Ban A Gun In 28 Days goes behind the scenes of the political process, speaking with survivors of the mosque attacks, key political players, and significant figures in New Zealand’s gun industry.

The report tracks the move toward gun reform through the eyes of Tofazzal Alam , a survivor from the Linwood Mosque attack; Judith Collins , Member of Parliament for the New Zealand National Party and Former Minister of Police; David Tipple , owner of Gun City, New Zealand’s largest fire arms retailer; and James Cagney , President of New Zealand Professional Hunting Guide Association.

It follows Ardern as she tackles this complex issue head on, changing the nation’s trajectory significantly - and swiftly.

With support from all but one member of the country’s 120-seat Parliament, Adern’s gun reforms represent a pivotal turning point in New Zealand history and the award-winning VICE New Tonight team captures the moment in this confronting and often moving special.

So SBS Viceland are showing the 5th Element 5 times in a row - lucky they don’t have the rights to some other movies like 101 Dalmatians or 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea - though they might still have the rights to 2001 A Space Odyssey

Hoarders

From Sunday 12 May at 7.35pm (7 Parts)

From the outside, their houses look normal, but inside, a family is struggling to keep ahead of the insignificant things that have taken over their lives. Hoarders wades through rooms of Christmas ornaments, tin foil, newspaper, bags of new clothing with tags still attached, and more.

Each person has latched onto something different and can’t seem to let go. Depending upon the situation, we’ll enlist the help of a therapist, a professional organiser, or a cleaning crew who will guide our collectors through the clean-up process and give them the tools they need to keep their behaviour in check.

I wonder how old the episodes will be. Hasn’t hoarders had a run years ago on another multichannel? (Gem perhaps?)

I’ve seen Hoarders on Gogglebox - from a Lifestyle broadcast. The episodes are form season 1 from 2009.

Strange to see this show being shown on a secondary SBS channel.

Because it isn’t on Ten or One?

The truth is right here! ‘The X-Files’ returns on SBS VICELAND in fully remastered HD

From 10 June The X-Files airs weeknights at 7:30pm on SBS VICELAND.

It was 1993 when FBI agents, Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) first captured our attention in sci-fi series, The X-Files . Now, 26 years on, SBS VICELAND is beyond thrilled to announce its return, for the first time on Australian television in fully remastered HD.

For those who didn’t catch it first time round, The X-Files follows the unconventional Mulder, who takes it upon himself to investigate unsolved cases – known as the X-Files – that he believes involve paranormal phenomena. In the hopes of debunking his theories, the FBI teams him up with Scully, a sceptical agent who has a degree in medicine and a strong bias towards the scientific. As the pair works to solve these unexplained cases, Mulder’s strong belief in the forces of the unknown continues to challenge Scully’s rational mind.

The X-Files won a bounty of awards over its 11 seasons, including Screen Actors’ Guild awards for Anderson and a BAFTA for creator Chris Carter.

Not sure what ‘fully remastered’ means but a 16:9 HD version of the X-Files was shown on ONE when it was a HD channel.

Yeah, Google tells me the X-Files was remastered in 2015. The image in seasons 1 and 2 was cropped when the original 4:3 negatives were scanned and converted to 16:9.

Has anyone heard any news about what’s happening with Viceland retransmission on Foxtel? Foxtel currently only shows Viceland in SD, which disappears 18 June.

While flicking between channels last night, I noticed there was a viewer advice below the Viceland watermark on the channel change.

I bet nothing will happen. They’ll keep the SD version going. Probably won’t even launch World Movies. You can guarantee they won’t be sharing their VAST channels with the Foxtel platform for whatever stupid reason.

I do hope Foxtel unlocks Viceland HD for iQ’s with tuners though.

On the SD one or both?
Currently, ch31 has a smaller watermark than usual and ch32 has the advice that SBS are changing what airs on ch32 (which is what I’m assuming you saw).
