Good to see SBS regaining the rights to the World Athletics Championships after the closure of Eurosport Australia (previous rights holder) last year. It will be interesting to see how SBS will cover the men’s and women’s marathons at the championships given they are held in daytime.

This is how to cover major sport. Live and on the ground. Many of our commercial broadcasters could learn a thing or two.

I am sure they’ll be on the ground in Qatar as well.

7 doing their Olympics and Commonwealth games in the studio in Australia doesn’t capture the excitement or atmosphere of a major sporting event.

Even Optus Sport doing the Euros last year was done in Australia

Awful coverage time and time again. Even the Gold Coast 2018 and they were stuck in some shoebox with a screen behind them. No nice window and soft studio. Just appalling coverage.

Great to read that the team will be in France, rather than in the studio.

Matthew Keenan and Dr Bridy O’Donnell are the commentators by the looks of it; while David McKenzie, Gracie Alvin and Christophe Mallett are reporting from the ground

They did have the breakfast show in London.

I find it quite bizarre that a network like SBS would invest in all out coverage on location and a decent number of commentators/presenters for smaller events like Tour De France or larger ones like the World Cup, but a bigger network like Seven who probably has a much bigger budget for bigger beasts in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games does F all and hosts from Melbourne with minimal presence there.

It’s nothing more than the bean counters trying to save money even though it makes them a lot of money.

Does anyone know if SBS will show matches in the upcoming NBA season? I think the last year in their previous deal was 2021-2022 season

SBS will broadcast the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup live from Costa Rica, which starts on August 10 local time. SBS will cover all the Young Matildas’ matches from the tournament, as well as the semi-finals and the final.

Bit of a late reply, but they really do go all out for the few sports they cover. The tracker app, stage replays in the afternoon, extra content like podcasts, social media engagement and an actual presence on the ground. Despite the small budget they manage to put together one of the most fully featured sport broadcasts in the country. All for a niche sport that runs from 10pm till 1 in the morning! Puts the other networks to shame

I’m sure they would invest more IF that was all they had, but as you said Olympics et al takes up much of the budget.

2022 Vuelta a España

The race will depart from the Dutch city of Utrecht this year, with the first three stages starting and finishing in the Netherlands before a rest day will allow for a transfer into Spain.

Stage four begins from the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz in Basque Country as the race makes its way to the finish in Madrid at the historical district of Paisaje de la Luz, or Landscape of Light where the winner will be crowned.

Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) took out last year’s race, with Enric Mas (Movistar) finishing second and Australian Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) taking third overall. After both sustaining injuries at the Tour de France, it’s unclear if Roglič and Haig will appear at this year’s Vuelta.

There are many notable names confirmed for this year’s event, with Australian Giro d’Italia winner Jai Hindley (BORA-Hansgrohe) and runner-up Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers) as well as Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) who will compete in their final Grand Tours.

Also confirmed is Belgian time trial champion Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) who will be one of the favourites for the overall classification and is looking to be in great form after a stunning solo victory at the San Sebastian Classic.

The women’s race, the Challenge by La Vuelta will again feature on SBS in an extended format, with five tough stages mapped out for the top riders in the peloton alongside the final five stages of the men’s race.

The Vuelta will mark the final chapter in an incredible year of cycling Grand Tours, so you won’t want to miss any of the action on SBS.
