Colosseum Rise And Fall

Sunday 17 August 07:30 PM Double Episode

A monument to blood and brutality, the Colosseum is the greatest amphitheatre ever built by the Romans. But what were the origins of the Colosseum and the gruesome spectacles performed within?

With unique access to new archaeology, this series explores the true purpose of the Colosseum and the network of amphitheatres spread throughout the Roman Empire. Visiting sites across Europe and north Africa, we explore finds that reveal both the scope of the games and the secrets of its gladiators.

Ep 1 The Colosseum is the greatest amphitheatre ever constructed by the Romans - but why was it built? In the heart of Rome, historians examine the remains of the earliest amphitheatre in the Roman world and, across Italy, there is further evidence for the origins of this iconic structure and the games that were held there. Brand-new archaeology at the Colosseum reveals which animals were brutally hunted in the arena, and how the Romans staged their extravagant spectacles.

Ep 2 The Colosseum thrived during Rome’s Golden Age. Cutting-edge analysis on bone remains reveals how gladiators were really treated, and recently discovered remains reveal how these fighters were trained for combat. By the end of the 2nd century CE, Rome began to lose its grip on power, and the Colosseum suffers. Investigations take archaeologists to ruins in Austria, Tunisia, and Rome, as they uncover the story of the Empire’s decline and fall.

World War II: End Game

Sunday, 14 September at 5.30pm (4 parts)

World War II: Endgame is a four-part series combining military history and big picture geopolitics. It’s the story of the “Grand Alliance” of World War Two, the unlikely team of Great Britain, the Soviet Union and the US that came together to defeat Hitler’s Nazi regime, before fracturing and turning on itself. With expert interviews, archival footage brought to life by cutting edge colourisation, this series explores the origins of a conflict that took the world to the edge of Armageddon.

Season One, Episode Two: Climax (Sunday, 14 September, 5.30pm)
As the war drew to a close in 1945, the geopolitical landscape changed dramatically. With Roosevelt’s death and Truman’s ascension to the highest office, a new phase of the Grand Alliance had begun, and the military strategies, key battles, and grim discoveries made as Allied forces closed in on Germany, would all lead to the beginning of a new world order.

Season One, Episode Three: Aftermath And The Atomic Age (Saturday, 20 September, 5.30pm)
The war in Europe was over, but heavy fighting continued in the East, and President Truman was desperate to bring the war to a close in the Pacific theatre. With the US Manhattan Project successfully testing the first nuclear bomb in July 1945, the US no longer needed Soviet help to overpower the Japanese forces who were dominating in the region.

Now experts, including former royal butler Paul Burrell and renaissance man Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, reveal the secrets of a house that helped shape the world views and personal convictions of the Queen Mother and the Queen.

Bertie Windsor, later George VI, married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and spent many happy times at Glamis - enjoying a simple, affectionate life he had been denied by his own father. And when king and queen of a Britain at War, the experiences of his wife growing up at Glamis rekindled the people’s love for the Royal Family. During the First World War, Elizabeth witnessed firsthand soldiers suffering PTSD and lost an adored brother on the Western Front- traumas that meant she understood what the soldiers and civilians of World War Two were enduring.

Have SBS shown this series before now? Is SBS cherry picking episodes of this show to screen now? I notice the episodes from Season 2 to 5 are on SBS on Demand but what’s going on with the broadcasts?

If they are cherry picking, then they should actually watch the episodes and screen the best eps rather than the ones that have well-known names in Australia. I’ve been streaming them this week and some of the lesser known names in Australia actually had some brilliant stories to tell.

That Torville and Dean episode was actually the worst one I’ve seen so far and not a good choice to launch the show in Australia. The best eps I’ve seen so far are Martin Kemp/Roman Kemp, Freddie Fittler/Jamie Redknapp, Maureen Lipman/Rula Lenska, Amanda Holden/Alan Carr and John Bishop/Hugh Boneville.

Why don’t they show all of them?

For the moment it looks like that is all the episodes that have been purchased.

A bit strange because, as I mentioned, they do have all the eps on their streaming service.

In 1966 Jimmy Chipperfield and the Marquess brought in 50 lions from as far away as Ethiopia and Kenya and released them into a one hundred acre fenced reserve.

Using amateur footage from the period never seen before on British television, the episode that whilst the public flocked to the safari park, not everyone was happy to see big game roaming freely in the Wiltshire countryside.
