Code Name Lucy: Spies Against Nazis

Sunday, 25 May at 5.30pm

Uncover the story of two spy networks, run from Switzerland, who were decisive in precipitating the Allied victory in the Second World War.

The first network, led by a Christian German who was deeply anti-Nazi, Rudolf Roessler, obtained confidential strategic information from the highest levels of the Nazi state, including the headquarters of the German army. The exceptional work of these spies led to a victory in the Eastern Front, but for a long time it remained the greatest secret of the Second World War. 80 years later, the declassification of the archives allows us to rediscover this incredible history.

Sherlock Holmes is arguably the most famous detective in the world, featuring in more than 60 original stories, and countless adaptions. For more than a century, he’s intrigued and excited his fans with his intellect and powers of deduction. He made his author, Arthur Conan Doyle, rich and famous. But the writer came to hate his fictional character.

Over the course of three episodes, historian and lifelong Sherlock Holmes fan Lucy Worsley investigates this curious love-hate relationship between Holmes and Doyle: detective and author.

Episode One:

Why did author Arthur Conan Doyle want to kill off his famous detective Sherlock Holmes - the man who brought him money and fame - only six years after creating him?

Indochina War: The Untold Story

Saturday, 31 May at 5.30pm (2 parts)

It was the 20th century’s most violent war of decolonisation.

For the first time ever, this exceptional documentary aims to recount the entirety of that forgotten conflict, the prelude to the Vietnam War. Far from the clichés of heroic combats, the multiplicity of eyewitness accounts from that era and the stunning power of images reveal a war that was all-out merciless and decisive.

Not often that we see SBS react to other channel’s big events. But wise to do so for Nine’s State of Origin on Wednesday night.

Shetland: Scotland’s Wondrous Isles

Friday 13 June 07:30 PM

Welcome to The Shetland Islands – an archipelago of wonders, unlike anywhere else in the world. In this series we’ll come ashore in this magical world, where seabirds outnumber people by a factor of many hundreds, and where you’re closer to the Arctic Circle than you are to London. We’ll meet the native Shetlanders who live according to centuries old traditions, feeding themselves on the ‘croft’ farms that have fed the locals for many centuries, or the fishing fleets that have wrenched precious sustenance from the ever-powerful sea.

And that’s to say nothing of the beauty of the landscape – from stunning beaches, to rugged cliff faces and sweeping landscapes. Join us on this celebratory journey, uncovering the magic that defines Shetland and the compelling stories that make it a truly exceptional destination.

Episode One:
The journey begins on the tiny island of Noss, with wardens Jen and Sally. They are the only residents and live a truly off-grid existence – with no mains water, electricity or gas – and even grow their own food in case they become stranded by the unpredictable weather. The upside is they have a front row seat to witness some of Shetland’s most spectacular wildlife.

Hunt For Truth: Tasmanian Tiger Verdict

Wednesday 25 June 07:30 PM

The hit SBS documentary series Hunt for Truth: Tasmanian Tiger returns for a final, gripping instalment Hunt for Truth: Tasmanian Tiger Verdict - chasing fresh clues, investigating compelling new evidence, and delivering a long-awaited verdict on one of the world’s greatest wildlife mysteries.

Tim Noonan, two-time Walkley Award-winning journalist and the creator behind Boy to Man and Extreme Engagement, leads viewers on a wild and emotional journey into the mystery of the thylacine, the legendary Tasmanian tiger. Since Season 1 (two episodes) premiered in June 2024, Tim has received a flood of viewer emails — fresh sightings, whistleblower accounts, and sensitive documents. One such tip led him to a trove of official records never before made public. Inside were explosive responses from wildlife rangers, revealing what authorities may have believed — and have kept hidden — for decades.

The last known thylacine officially died in captivity in 1936. Yet, scores of credible eyewitnesses claim sightings that suggest the species may still be alive.

At the public’s request, Noonan ventures deep into the Tasmanian wilderness, armed with new leads, to solve the mystery of the elusive tiger once and for all. Also, returning in this episode is the legendary thylacine hunter “Tigerman” who has spent close to half a million dollars searching for the creature. He invites Tim to a remote cave peppered with suspicious tracks. In the end, Tim weighs all the evidence — the science, the sightings, the secrets — and delivers an honest, personal verdict: does he believe the thylacine still exists? And if the Tasmanian tiger is still out there, would we ever forgive ourselves for letting it go extinct… a second time?

Thursday 2 July 08:25 PM
