Code Name Lucy: Spies Against Nazis

Sunday, 25 May at 5.30pm

Uncover the story of two spy networks, run from Switzerland, who were decisive in precipitating the Allied victory in the Second World War.

The first network, led by a Christian German who was deeply anti-Nazi, Rudolf Roessler, obtained confidential strategic information from the highest levels of the Nazi state, including the headquarters of the German army. The exceptional work of these spies led to a victory in the Eastern Front, but for a long time it remained the greatest secret of the Second World War. 80 years later, the declassification of the archives allows us to rediscover this incredible history.

Face Down: Killing Of Thomas Niedermayer

Sunday 25 May 11:00 PM

This film tells the story of two men: Thomas Niedermayer and Brian Keenan. One was a successful business manager who helped create thousands of jobs in Northern Ireland. The other was a leading figure in the IRA who organised the kidnapping of his former boss.

Killing Sherlock With Lucy Worsley

Thursday 29 May 08:40 PM

Sherlock Holmes is arguably the most famous detective in the world, featuring in more than 60 original stories, and countless adaptions. For more than a century, he’s intrigued and excited his fans with his intellect and powers of deduction. He made his author, Arthur Conan Doyle, rich and famous. But the writer came to hate his fictional character.

Over the course of three episodes, historian and lifelong Sherlock Holmes fan Lucy Worsley investigates this curious love-hate relationship between Holmes and Doyle: detective and author.

Episode One:

Why did author Arthur Conan Doyle want to kill off his famous detective Sherlock Holmes - the man who brought him money and fame - only six years after creating him?

The Head - Season 3

Friday 30 May 01:45 PM Overnight

Episode 1: In a lawless desert territory, Lauren and Rachel assemble a team to continue Arthur Wilde’s climate-fighting bacteria research. Rachel is shocked when Magie Mitchell joins them. They test the bacteria-infused water on five guinea pigs. Just as testing begins, a sandstorm brings an unconscious stranger to their isolated base. When he awakens, murders begin, and the nightmare returns.

Episode 2: After the initial murders, the crew attempt to hide the truth from test subjects. When facility coordinator Geri is stung by a planted scorpion and evacuation proves impossible due to sabotage, they realise they’re stranded in the desert. A year earlier, imprisoned Arthur Wilde receives a mysterious letter from ‘XX’, praising his crimes.

Indochina War: The Untold Story

Saturday, 31 May at 5.30pm (2 parts)

It was the 20th century’s most violent war of decolonisation.

From 1940 to 1954, the jewel in the crown of France’s colonial empire was on fire. The French and Viet Minh turned the Indochinese peninsula into a blazing inferno. For the first time ever, this exceptional documentary aims to recount the entirety of that forgotten conflict, the prelude to the Vietnam War. Far from the clichés of heroic combats, the multiplicity of eyewitness accounts from that era and the stunning power of images reveal a war that was all-out merciless and decisive.

Episode One:

From 1940 to 1954, France’s brutal war in Indochina marked one of the 20th century’s bloodiest decolonisation conflicts. This gripping documentary revisits the forgotten precursor to the Vietnam War.

Note that SBS’s schedule is reacting to Wednesday’s State of Origin. The final ever episode of The Handmaid’s Tale is moved forward to the earlier day of Tuesday and then repeated on Wednesday. Alone Australia is out of this week’s schedule with a double episode the following week.

Not often that we see SBS react to other channel’s big events. But wise to do so for Nine’s State of Origin on Wednesday night.
