It sure is. I will be watching this one  At least it’s not the dreadful “best of” nonsense that last aired in recent times, with terrible ratings…

Also, good to see the Mastermind Season Final airing at the 7.30pm slot on the Friday. Another good tradition that is continuing on SBS.

Sunday 2 August 7:30 PM 3 parts

Showcasing the monumental exploits of one of history’s greatest military leaders, Alexander the Great is a premium docuseries that retraces his destiny through the eyes of his closest confidant and lifelong friend, Hephaestion.

Episode One: The Making Of A Hero

Las Vegas And The American Dream

Sunday 2 August 8:25 PM

Las Vegas is considered the most radical embodiment of the American Dream. No other place stands so strongly for upward mobility, self-stylisation, and the belief that with courage, risk, and a bit of luck, anyone can make it to the top. But what lies behind the myth of the city that never sleeps?

This film traces the extraordinary development of Las Vegas: from an oasis with natural water sources to a railroad hub, from the gangster-influenced gambling paradise of the 1940s to the “Atomic City” of the 1950s, and finally to today’s mega-metropolis of superlatives. Since its founding in 1905, the city has grown into a global entertainment centre that attracts millions of visitors each year and generates billions in revenue. Iconic casinos, spectacular shows, and gigantic themed hotels shape the image of a city that is bigger, louder, and more extreme than any other in the United States.

But Las Vegas is more than neon lights and roulette. The documentary looks behind the façade of the gambling metropolis and tells stories of fractures, dependencies, and social inequalities. It asks whether Las Vegas truly is a place of unlimited opportunity—or rather a magnifying glass in which the contradictions of the American way of life are intensified.

Britannia: The Queen’s Ship

Saturday 8 August 8:25 PM

For more than four decades, the Britannia served as a floating embassy for the British Empire and a royal retreat. This documentary delves deep into the secrets of the ship and uses archive material to tell the story of the ‘power and magic’ associated with the Royal yacht.

For Queen Elizabeth II, the Britannia was a beloved private retreat and, at the same time, a ship that represented a global superpower through its size and exclusive furnishings. To this day, the 126-metre-long state ship is considered the mother of all yachts and an extraordinary style icon.

The film documents the unique charisma of the Britannia which has been moored as a museum ship in Edinburgh, Scotland, since 1997.

Dad’s Secret War: France 1944

Saturday 22 August 05:25 PM

Narrated by actor Kevin Bacon, Dad’s Secret War: France 1944 focuses on two top-secret World War II organisations – the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) and the British SOE (Special Operations Executive), American and British organisations responsible for silent, unseen, highly classified missions of critical importance to defeating the Nazis.

The documentary shares the riveting, true story of an American who joined the British SOE and was parachuted into France with a small team just after D-Day to organise the French Resistance into a cohesive army. The mission was to stop Germany’s most feared troops from reaching Normandy in the days after the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944.

Queen Elizabeth II Her Story Our Century

Saturday 22 August 07:30 PM

Marking what would have been Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th year, this landmark documentary tells the story of her life alongside a century of momentous change in Britain.

Through archive and eyewitness reflections, the film explores how she led the monarchy through profound social, political and cultural change.

The Assassinations Of Queen Victoria

Saturday 22 August 08:35 PM

She was the Queen who commanded an Empire stretching to the farthest corners of the world… but ruling a quarter of the planet’s population can put your life at risk. The Assassinations of Queen Victoria is the extraordinary true story of eight separate attempts on Queen Victoria’s life during her 63-year reign. It’s a gripping portrait of danger, defiance, and the unexpected threats lurking behind royal pageantry.

Crowned at 18, married and expecting a baby at 21, Victoria insisted on showing herself to the crowds. But visibility came with grave danger. On Constitution Hill, a gunman fired at her point-blank. She stayed calm, told her driver to move on, and the would-be assassin was hauled to Bedlam — while the Queen’s bravery sent her popularity soaring.

The assassination attempt set a pattern for 7 further astonishing attacks on Victoria’s life. With the Queen refusing to take precautions, a succession of disillusioned and politically motivated young men took aim at Victoria. And as each plot grew bolder, one question haunted the nation: how long could the Queen’s luck hold?
