No Hamburg, No Beatles
Wednesday 25 December 7:30 PM
This feature length documentary tells the story of The Beatles, before they were famous, learning their trade in post-war Hamburg. As John Lennon said: “We were born in Liverpool but grew up in Hamburg.”
In August 1960 the Beatles arrived in Hamburg, a city that had become the vice capital of Europe. The Beatles had to learn quickly - they were raw material both on and off stage, and had to improve fast in front of rowdy and aggressive crowds. This first ‘tour of duty’ lasted only four months when the 17-year-old George Harrison headed home for being underage, and Paul McCartney and Pete Best were arrested and deported – for arson.
Years later, when the Fab Four played Hamburg again, they were the biggest pop stars on the planet – and it was Hamburg they had to thank for shaping their career. After all, if there was no Hamburg, there would be no Beatles.

Leonard Cohen: If It Be Your Will
Friday 27 December 8:35 PM
In November 2017, the Bell Centre in Montreal became a sacred ground where thousands gathered to honour the poetic brilliance of Leonard Cohen. “Tower of Song: A Memorial Tribute to Leonard Cohen” was more than a concert; it was a mesmerising symphony of music, memories and heartfelt tributes. Featuring Cohen’s original band and musicians from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the event included performances by Sting, Elvis Costello, Lana Del Rey, Feist, Damien Rice, The Lumineers, k.d. lang, Courtney Love, and Cohen’s son and collaborator, Adam Cohen, among others.
This documentary combines the electrifying performances from that evening with intimate interviews and rare archival footage of Leonard Cohen. Offstage, Adam Cohen, and other artists, share personal anecdotes and reflections, highlighting Cohen’s impact on their lives and his profound influence in the world of music. These insights paint a rich portrait of Leonard Cohen, as an artist and man.

Good to read that the Big Fat Quiz of (2024) is returning on New Years Day again. It’s a great show, and a new yearly tradition watching this.
Love all the WW2 stuff on SBS on Saturdays. It’s a tradition.
I saw a recent survey that says WW2 documentaries are the favorite viewing for men aged 45+. SBS should have a channel dedicated to it.
And call it ‘NAZI GOLD’.
Nothing says tradition like a war documentary.
Horrendous idea which will lead to so much backlash IMO.
remember when Saturday nights on SBS were fun, shows like South Park, Iron Chef and Rockwiz.
