The Age article has been corrected and also now includes a table of most watched TV programs
Whilst obviously wrong, at least the program title (whether Seven decide to re-code for a separate ‘extra time’ and/or ‘penalty shootout’ and what changes if any to that figure for actual run times of those eventuate), for the time being, it is the new VOZ record holder, overtaking the 2022 Aus Open Women’s Final Presentations, 2022 Aus Open Women’s Final match and 2021 AFL GF.
Also, until corrections are made official, last night’s match (until 7pm) actually falls short of the aforementioned events, with metro broadcast on par and below respectively, regional below and higher respectively and BVOD higher than both respectively. Melbourne and Brisbane’s audience is also significantly lower than both.
The timing of the tournament won’t help junior participation numbers - junior seasons are approaching their end and trying to maintain any post-WC hype will be tricky for something in 7-9 months time.
Ever noticed that the sports themselves talk about the benefits that any bounce delivers at the junior level in muted tones? Because they know it’s often short-lived, nor does it help that the options for girls is now significantly wider then it was even 12 or 18 months ago (and there are codes like AFL and CA who pour significant money into attracting and retaining juniors through programs like AusKick).
It could always be worse - Netball Australia must be devastated that their success at the World Cup has been completely overshadowed by the WWC

Really? Where are they? There probably will end up being a minor increase in playing numbers but right now it is just an assertion.
There will never be a bigger sugar hit for Australian soccer but it is still just a sugar hit.
The problem is that once it is done, that is it. If the world cup was coming back here next year and the year after and the every year after that, then you would have a sustained impact.

Exactly this.
Bottom line is, by the end of this tournament it will 7 months until kids are deciding what winter sport to play next year.
And the sports with resources that actually invest them at grass roots and pathways will still be doing what they are doing

The entire top 5 is out due to the overrun in the World Cup.
I know the average of the match has to be adjusted BUT it’s crazy that figure watching the extra time & penalty shootout is minimum 4.9mill.
If I was 7, I would code the 7news segment as Extra time + penalty shootout to highlight the massive audience for the match ending
Despite everything that has been said here, I still maintain this World Cup is like nothing like we have seen before
For example last night so many people would have been watching a penalty shoot out for the very first time. Now everyone has become a “soccer expert “
I beliefe it is the start of something great with huge programming opportunities but we will see
I’m sure they will, they have form for inflating ratings.
Like in 2010 after the drawn AFL GF, re-coded the Presentations and went to over 3m metro in consolidated.
There was the 2016 AFL GF which had Presentations also broken-out with 3.2m metro in consolidated.
Or the Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony in 2021, re-coded for time corrections and an earlier portion for nearly 2.7m metro broadcast.
Or all the MKR Winner Annouments (which yes all networks have done and has been a debate for a long time - many segments often only run less than 15min), such as 2013 with well over 3m metro, the program to rate next highest ahead of last night (which is what Seven’s “in a decade” refers to).
This isn’t in dispute, the tournament has been unprecedented for a number of reasons - but it’s important not to get carried away with the likely legacy that the tournament will leave.

Yet to be officially adjusted. According to Seven, the adjusted figure will be 4.17 million including 472,000 viewers on 7plus making the Matildas v France game the biggest streaming event ever seen in Australia. It claims the event as the highest rating TV sport program of the past decade.
Famously, Rugby Union in Australia went from strength to strength after the 2003 World Cup
