5SOS should have been a musical guest on this show (something which it lacks IMO). It would have been better to see them perform and then just have a quick fiery 2-3 min chat afterwards. That would have worked a lot better.
Unfortunately, there is no room in the studio for them to perform.
I’m sure they could make it work. Even on The Panel back in the day they had musical desks in the very small studio (I think the same studio?). The presenters would literally walk off from the desk and musical artists would either perform at the desk or stand just behind it. These are a couple of examples.

With the new set up, I believe there would be room down the far end of the studio for a band set up:
They would just need to remove the few rows of audience from that area.
Ok, so that’s what you think, right… I don’t criticise anything on 10. The Office Australia was crap. I tried to watch but gave up after a few minutes. I will criticise anything that’s bad but I don’t continue to watch whether it’s on 10, 9 or 7. I like Sam’s show, off course it could be better. I’ve said before that it should be on much later and been reminded by others that 10 couldn’t afford to make it a late night show as they need 8:30 fillers. Anyway all this just because I said if anyone thinks a show is so bad they should simply just change channel or turn off.
The band might not want to perform - too much trouble with logistics. Just answers questions and bring up the tour.
I actually found this bit more interesting and watchable than the guest interviews!
The bit I find cringe with his interviews is how he pretends he doesn’t know who they are or acts like he’s being forced by execs to have them on his show and isn’t really interested in them. I assume the guests are in on the gag and agree because they still get their album/tour/book promoted. Maybe I’m in the minority and most most people actually find that funny but I would much prefer a more genuine interview like The Cheap Seats or The Project would have done.
I was thinking the same thing when I watched The Cheap Seats on the following night.
They interviewed Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20 and he hasn’t been in the limelight or relevant in the past 15 years. They managed to find interesting questions and angles to make him shine. He was therefore very chatty and funny, so it was a brilliant interview.
10 need to put the likes of 5SOS and other random guests at the end of 10News+ (either as a prerecord or in studio) and be done with it rather than messing with the working dog shows and trying to use them as a vehicle to fulfill what the project once did. Rob Thomas was alright on the cheap seats but that show has lost its way with too many guests rather than its original format of random comedy skits, making fun of the weeks news etc.
That makes no sense since 10 News+ is supposed to be a hard hitting news program.
The Cheap Seats have always had guests and guest presenters. From the start, they had Mel Tracina for entertainment, Titus O’Reilly for Sport and one guest every week.
This week they had Mel Tracina, Ryan Shelton, Ben Elton and Rob Thomas. It was one extra guest but that’s not usual. Some weeks they have only had Mel and one other guest so it balances out.
If it’s apparently sticking around and getting a reformat next year then why not. Think Hamish era late news and frees up the comedy shows to focus on comedy. Anyway, topic for elsewhere.
Fair point - the guest presenters have always been great (eg; Mel on Entertainment and someone on sport), a random quirky guest (eg: the town crier) has always been good cheap seats material, however a musician promoting his show (eg Rob Thomas), while legitimate television, probably belongs elsewhere/in a different format.
Ideally, they should have a lighter News/Entertainment program like The Project for guests for the fluff. But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with 5SOS or Rob Thomas appearing on shows like The Cheap Seats or Sam Pang Tonight.
Ten should talk to Darryl and see if they can get a light entertainment program for Saturday nights. Hey hey what a great idea!
And call it Hey, hey, it’s Stupid. ![]()
I reckon this is a problem with a lot of the revival-of-old-format shows on telly at the moment, it’s been long enough that the current producing talent don’t know how these shows get made, so they resort to formulas for other formats they know… but it doesn’t and shouldn’t work that way.
Talkin’ 'Bout Your Generation is one good recent example of this.
Shaun and Sam bouncing off each other - great.
Did anyone else have volume go off during Michael Weatherly’s interview for a few seconds (towards the beginning of his interview)?
Better monologue tonight.
Had it here too. The volume came back when Sam and Michael were laughing at something said, which we didn’t know what it was.
Yes here too. I think it was deliberately muted. They’re on a slight delay so they can’t do edits but perhaps something was said that couldn’t be aired and they just held the mute button down.
