Sale of Southern Cross Television assets to Ten/SWM

I’ve removed a fair amount of the off topic posts. Given we can’t play nice, thread will be re locked pending more news

Looks like the remaining SCA TV licences might end up with ADH according to the AFR with talk of a bid of $10m for the remaining licences in Tasmania, SA & Darwin

Both ADH and SCA are silent - according to the Unmade newsletter this morning, ADH might also be after Nine Radio

SCA’s interim results are out at the end of the month - maybe some news then

Massive whiff by Seven if they don’t get Seven Tasmania, but $10m would massively overvalue the rest of the licenses, so if that’s the offer, no wonder no one else will match.

I would be very surprised if ADH is still interested now the most profitable part of the business (the East Coast stations) have been sold off - was expecting the only interested party would be Seven West Media, even though they are also tight for money AFAIK

No surprises there - SCA have always had a “we will sell, but only for the price we see as fair” attitude when it comes to selling their television assets

Might be beneficial for ADH to launch Newsmax AU with some ‘inaugural’ regional stations on their hands, Sky News Regional style.

Gotta say, this is a fantastic play by Seven - wait for ADH to go bust and get the licences dirt cheap.

That is if Seven still have cash by then

Heck…MediaSpy could buy them if ADH goes bust. They wont be worth that much after they’re done with them.

Thought this part was interesting.

ADH TV does not expect to run its online content on the regional free-to-air networks, but wants to reintroduce local production, particularly of news.

Even though national networks are the ideal endgame, at the moment Seven and Nine are the winners.

They have no costs of broadcasting or upkeep of infrastructure, all the while wringing SCA, WIN and Imparja for as much money as they can to pay for network content.

Maybe I’ve misunderstood. i know that transmission infrastructure is now managed by third parties, but the networks would have to pay to use and maintain them? The transmission operators are not doing it for free?

ADH is a glorified YouTube channel at the moment? Where are they getting the money for this? (apologies if this is covered in the article, unfortunately my digital subscription to Nine newspapers does not include AFR)

Well an affiliate paying ~40% of revenue, even if that’s profit or loss, is potentially more lucrative than the benefits gained from getting 100% of revenue and costs.

Well it would be probably the best value investment in trying to tip the balance of the senate in Tasmania - given their oversized influence on the election outcome, pushing Tasmania rightwards by controlling their most popular nightly news service is about as good value as you can get if you’re the kinda person typically putting cash into similar causes- your Gina Rinehart types.

well she has form in that area, I guess. She invested well into Ten many years ago, though that didn’t work out so well IIRC :stuck_out_tongue:

The article doesn’t say how they’ll finance the purchase, if the news is true and goes ahead.

Another point I found interesting;

ADH TV is chaired by former ABC chairman Maurice Newman and run by its co-founder, Jack Bulfin. It has been advised by former Seven West Media commercial director Bruce McWilliam, along with 333 Capital.

I seem to recall prior reporting as well that ex 7 News boss Jason Morrison was somehow linked to this mob as well.

It does beg the question about where all the funding is coming from, does Jones have deep pockets?

Newsmax money. Seems like an odd purchase but if they can make local news work in Darwin and/or elsewhere (based on what they’re saying) then anything is possible.

Unless his pockets are extremely deep, he would probably be best served using his money towards his current legal issues above anything else.

My understanding is that James Packer is/was heavily involved in bankrolling their operations- wouldn’t surprise me if he’s got a few of his rich list mates on board with this venture too (I’m sure Gina for one would be interested).

One thing that isn’t quite clear- does this deal include the Remote Central and Eastern licence area as well? Can’t imagine SCA would want to try and sell everything off only to still be stuck with one licence.

You would think it would come as part of the package deal. If Imparja can’t make a profit, you have to wonder if SCA is making any coin from broadcasting there either but SCA would have lower overheads (like less Alice Springs staff).
