Ah a time when regionals covered local sporting events.

Friday 6 May 1988

Doug Hogan was a long time Wagga Wagga media identity.. I think he still read the Prime Local News right up until the time it was moved to Canberra.. I believe he declined the opportunity to relocate to Canberra.

TV Guide for that day.. the above event was a 1 h 15 min broadcast.

Looks like it was shown on AMV Albury as well.

he relocated to Canberra in 2010 to read the Wagga news bulletin when it shifted there, for a couple of years before becoming a deputy news editor at Prime7 in Canberra.

I couldn’t understand this early morning scheduling - Daybreak News then GMA given these were 10 programs and Prime was at that point aligned to 7.

As far as I know CBN6 (Midstate Television) didnt screen Daybreak News, but did NEN9 also screen Daybreak News?

Even though Prime was aligning itself to Seven ahead of aggregation, some existing non-Seven programs were still cherry picked and kept on Prime. As well as Good Morning Australia, see also Midday and Days Of Our Lives. Then Who’s The Boss? later in the night.

60 Minutes I think continued to be shown by Prime leading up to aggregation, though possibly in an alternative timeslot.

I remember 60 Minutes was after the Sunday movie in 1989 on CBN6. I do understand the GMA thing but not the Daybreak News as most regionals still started the day schedule at 7am

might have just been a package deal with GMA, i.e. “Buy GMA, Get Daybreak News for free”.

The same on NEN-9/ECN-8 Tamworth & Taree too.

And wasn’t Daybreak News on 9, not 10?

Edit: Looks like ‘Business Today’ was on 9 back then before ‘Today’, Nine’s ‘Daybreak News’ must have been later.

RVN not airing AFL back then? Maybe a rights issue?

Always found Wagga Wagga to be one of those places where support for both AFL and Rugby League was strong.

I was under the impression RVN chose RL whenever push came to shove

I probably tend to agree, but there wouldn’t be much in it…

This is Friday 12 August 1988, a night when both the VFL and NSWRL had games on.

Albury only showed the VFL, but in prime time, and Wagga only showed the NSWRL game, but after the movie.

Was Daybreak News Daybreak from CNN? If so then it was also shown on 7 around 2-4am as part of News Overnight in the mid to late 80’s. That said, there are programs in that guide from all 3 commercial networks, e.g. The Midday Show and Days of Our Lives (9), Romper Room and Eleven AM (7), Good Morning Australia (10).

Although not a NSW schedule from a round that time the Melbourne TV guide listed Nine as having Early News and Business Today whilst Ten had Daybreak about a month later.

Also 7 had TVAM. From memory i think from the first week in July 1988, that CBN6 tried the first hour of TVAM.

No i believe Ron Wilson aired the Channel 10 version

some pictures of the studios of NQTV, 12 The Strand, Townsville, circa 1980/81.

I walked past there on the weekend. Nothing much has happened there since TNQ moved out of there a few years ago.

This was about a year after my family left there(after living there for 4 years) and moved back to Brisbane
