That’s from my old YouTube channel
None of those are the idents we’re talking about?
No that’s not it
Sorry if this isn’t the best place to ask - but there’s been discussion in one of the threads recently about how regional ABC stations showed the Channel Nine cricket coverage if it wasn’t being carried on their regional commercial station.
Do we know what happened to any ABC shows that were pre-empted by the cricket, such as the kids shows in the afternoon? Were they just lost in those markets?
Also, how many regional stations are we talking about here? The listings I’ve seen state “regional only” but is that nearly all the non-metro areas or just a handful whose commercial station opted not to show - or didn’t have the rights to show - the cricket?
Was it just cricket or was there an arrangement for any other sports to be shown on the ABC in regional areas? Olympics, for example?
ABC to the best of my knowledge never took the Channel 9 cricket coverage. They did their own. It might have been a cleanfeed of the picture and sound but had their own commentary and graphics
As for pre-empted programs. No idea. But i do recall us in Newcastle trying to watch Doctor Who via a snowy signal of ABC Sydney
The ABC only took the Nine coverage in an emergency if their OB van broke down. I did see that on a couple of occasions.
The ABC split their network in NSW, VIC, SA, WA and QLD only for Test Cricket. The ABC metro stations in those states ran their normal schedule with no cricket. And the state feeds (regional feeds) during the daytime showed Cricket instead and mostly rejoined the ABC schedule at the end of the days play around 6pm/7pm or 5pm/6pm in QLD and 3pm/4pm in WA. Meaning any daytime content was only screened on the metro stations only.
One exception, when Test Cricket came out of Perth, the ABC would run a pre-empted schedule in the evening in the eastern states where the Test Cricket would continue on the regionals until stumps and then basically ran a delayed version of the metro schedule until the end of the night. The regionals did still break away from the Test Cricket for the 7pm State News nonetheless crossing back to the Cricket at the end of the bulletin.
The ACT, TAS and NT metro stations ran ABC Test Cricket being there were no Nine stations in those areas back then before aggregation. This all ended in 1992 from memory when most regional areas were aggregated and the ABC had no further requirement to televise Test Cricket.
I can remember seeing cricket on ABC-TV in Melbourne in the early 80’s. One thing I remember was that they must have only had one camera covering the wicket , as every other over, you would see the batter from behind. Since Nine always showed the batter from the front, I ended up watching cricket on Nine.
Could that have been a Shield match?
Possibly. Did Shield players wear all-white in those days?
It was on at the same time as the cricket on Nine.
Pretty much lost, although during summer daytime shows on ABC were mostly just repeats or test patterns, anyway. A lot of schools programs would have already ended for the year. So, no real loss
Essentially all non metro areas. Possibly also including Canberra, Hobart and Darwin.
ABC was sometimes utilised for carrying events like Olympics, Melbourne Cup, etc into remote areas or where commercial TV didn’t exist. My understanding in these instances was that ABC simply relayed the commercial network coverage but opted-out during commercial breaks.
The overnight coverage of the 1976 summer Olympics was carried by the ABC and all commercial TV channels here in Melbourne, but I remember that 9 had extra coverage during the afternoon, so presumably Olympics coverage in regional areas wouldn’t have been an issues prior to the era of exclusive rights being sold to one channel.
I also remember watching a replay of the 1982 VFL grand final on the ABC on a weekday afternoon after school. This was when Seven broadcast the grand final live nationwide, including here in Melbourne.
Sadly, the most recent Summer Olympics in which Australia failed to win a Gold Medal.
Interestingly, but rather embarrassingly, the host nation also failed to top an event as well.
I think it was the other way around… ABC, Seven and Nine had daily highlights packages during the day/early evening, but Nine went alone with extended overnight coverage featuring results and highlights as they came in from the satellite.
AFAIK ABC produced its own VFL coverage in parallel to Seven (up until 1986 when VFL signed up coverage rights to Broadcom), although it did not have rights to live coverage of the Grand Final, but featured replays on Grand Final night or the following day, depending on each state’s schedule, I guess.
I must’ve watched hours and hours of Test cricket on ABC in Bendigo as a kid. And no ad breaks!
One Day matches (ie. Kerry Packer’s B&H World Series) was shown on the Commercial station.
I wonder if anyone here who lived in Metro regions watched test matches on a regional ABC channel (especially in Sydney on ABC Wollongong Channel 5A)?
Me too, though the picture quality looked very washed out (compared to a “snowy” Channel Nine up here in Newcastle).
Though only seeing a score / scoreboard once every 20 mins or so was frustrating… And Norman May’s commentary … “He’s taken one… and now he’s coming back for two”… in a very slow and monotonous voice.
Yeah they did wear all white.
If you were in Melbourne it’s unlikely to have been a test match broadcast t on both Nine and ABC as they never held the rights simultaneously in Melbourne at that time. The ABC did however show the last season of shield matches in competing markets after they lost the test rights.
Best part of cricket those days was the one dayers between states when WWOS would roll out Kerry O’Keeffe to commentate. Remember watching as a kid pissing myself laughing at HIS laugh.
30 years later and I still do!!!
