Regional Radio Ratings

I would think mainly car radio, and there would be quite a bit of Sydney commuters boosting the Sydney figures too.

Generally anywhere along the coastal fridge is good for Sydney fm. Around Albion Park and Dapto, even a car radio will struggle getting Sydney fm due to the escarpment. The next sweet spot for Sydney fm is Kiama to Gerrringong.

I don’t know how Sydney Am performs in the Gong, but with the increased popularity of streaming, Wollongong listeners can easily get their KJO or Ben Fordham / Hadley fix.

Wave fm and KIIS both being on the iHeart Radio App could possibly explain the large share for KIIS in the Gong too.
@HUFF you beat me to it

Thanks for the coverage map @HUFF
According to your map and my experience too Belambi to around Corrimal look to be the sweet spot for suburban grade Sydney fm coverage.

Also around Thirroul where the escarpment shades i98 / Wave, Sydney fm is receivable at similar strength or better.

Was that done with Nautel or another application?

That doesn’t explain 94.9 PowerFM’s low ratings.

Though Power doesn’t have K&J at brekky and has a poor signal anywhere north of Lake Illawarra.

What is the point of listening to Power fm when Wave fm is playing the same song at exactly the same time with a superior signal from Gerringong north?

It is only Nowra south and the Highlands where you would listen to Power fm. All lower population areas, this and the Wave fm factor limits the Power fm share.

I wonder if Power fm will eventually exit the Wollongong survey and be like 2ST. Power fm has the same share as CADA which is the weakest fortuitous signal in the Gong.

True, though I wonder how many listeners in the area would know that. At least 0.9% don’t.

0.9% is the people who can’t receive Wave fm and don’t listen to any other receivable station.
ARN certainly are doing everything they can to limit Cumm / share of Power fm and this is hurting both stations. Dumb programming

It’s a Wollongong survey, so I highly doubt there’d be anyone in the surveyed area that can get Power but not Wave.

But agree, and I think we pretty much all do, that Wave should be aligned with the 2ST format not Power.

Possibly the reason 2ST is not in the Wollongong survey is its fortuitous signal is so poor into the Wollongong survey area. It is good in Gerringong, but poor to non existent in Kiama north. That is why Wave fm should share the 2ST playlist an fm share would not be h is better than into Wollongong. Also Power fm is shaded by the Gib in Mittagong, and the Sydney fm’s are at similar strength.

What they are currently doing with Wave and Power fm is completely flawed.
If nothing changes Power could get close to 0 share, and if and when that does happen they may do a 2SM and remove it from the survey.

Today, we’re off to Cairns up in Far North QLD:

Star 102.7 remains on top with 27% (+0.4), followed by Hit at a distant 2nd with 17.4% (-1.8), Triple M with 14.8% (+1.0), ABC Far North QLD with 9% (-1.4), JJJ with 8.8% (-1.9), and 4CA with 5.4% (+0.2).

In the demos, Star is #1 in the under-65s, with the exception of the 25-39s, where Hit narrowly beat it. In the 65+, ABC Far North tops it, followed closely by 4CA.

In breakfast, Star’s Dave & Inkie dominates with 28.8% (+0.7), followed by Hit’s Cliffo & Bronte with 17% (-1.2), and Triple M’s Tammy & JB with 14.5% (+1.7). In drive, Will & Woody on Star dominates with 28.1% (+3.0), followed by Hit’s Carrie & Tommy with 18.1% (-3.8), and Triple M’s Rush Hour with 15.7% (-0.8).

The “Other Stations” share is at 9.3%, up 1.3 from last year.

Wow…Star is the powerhouse up in Cairns.
Poor old 4CA is in a need of a FM conversation.

Another rejection of SCA network breakfast approach.

Good to see a small uptick for 4CA, a pity it doesn’t do better, great local announcers and content in breakfast and mornings.

The rise in other stations will be heartening to retiring/ed 4KZ & 4AM General Manager Al Kirton who is always very proud of his stations’ overspill into the Cairns market.

True, though a bump of 0.2 is its first upward move since 2017.

That’s rather hilarious. The highest & lowest rating stations share ownership & the same building.

You’d think they’d compare notes.

I agree. Even the music isn’t too bad. If they went on the FM band, I feel this will help.

After listening to music on FM stereo and digital devices for many years I find it hard to listen to music on a muffled sounding AM station.

Well, they were on 102.7 for a few years before going back to AM.

True. I always wondered how 4CA and 4MK rated back then when they were on FM?

In 1999, 4CA rated 16.9%, whilst Hot FM rated 22.5%. Sea FM debuted at 16.2%, whilst Easy Listening 846 debuted at 9.6%.

On the link below are the ratings figures for Townsville, Mackay, Cairns & Albury, with the ‘Last’ column being the c. 2000 figures.

Long story short, 4CA & 4MK rated very well when they were on FM, and even the AM commercial music stations rated better back then than they do now. It was a close battle between the 3 commercial FM stations in Cairns in both 2000 & 2003.
