And now there is no local afternoon shift either (that comes from Albury). They’ve gotten almost everything wrong on that station.
Looking at the ratings, Triple M’s afternoon shift fell from 2nd at 14.6% last year (when they still had a local presenter) to 3rd at 11.5% this year, the biggest decline of any timeslot for any station.
In that same timeslot, Star scored a 19.1% share (unchanged from last year).
Today, we’re off to the Sunshine Coast:
Mix FM remains on top with 16.2% (+0.3), followed by Sea FM with 13% (-0.8), 91.1 Hot FM with 12.6% (+0.5), JJJ with 12.1% (-0.4), and ABC Sunshine Coast with 6.1% (-1.9).
In the demos, Sea is #1 in the 18-39s, JJJ (!) tops the 40-54s, with Mix the #1 commercial station not far ahead of Hot. In the 55-64s, Mix dominates, whilst they have a narrow win in the 65+, just 0.1 ahead of ABC Sunshine Coast.
In breakfast, Mix’s Mark & Caroline is #1 with 16.3% (-0.7), followed closely by Sea’s Juelz & Seamus at 15.3% (+0.2), and Hot’s Sam & Ash with 12.8% (+0.6). In drive, Mix’s Todd & Sami is #1 with 17.1% (+1.6), followed by JJJ’s Tyrone & Abby (who replaced Hobba & Hing last month) with 14.3% (-0.6), Hot’s Nugget & Al with 13.9% (+1.4), and Sea’s Elly & Becks with 13.4% (-2.0).
The “Other Stations” ratings is at 30.4%, up 1.1% from last year. Much of that would be towards Sunshine FM, as well as Zinc 96 & Brisbane commercial stations.
One of ABC’s better areas; 6% for local and 3% for ABC Brisbane and 12% for JJJ. News Radio again appearing to be a wasted resource at less than 1% while RN - for which there is no local station is mostly from 4QG Bald Hills or Gympie 96.9 at 3%.
Worth noting Becks is leaving the SeaFM local drive show shortly.
What is his next role?
Unsure, but based on his announcement I doubt it’s on air.
Today, we’re off to Townsville:
Triple M has taken the top spot with 20.2% (-0.1), with Hit falling to 2nd place with 18.6% (-6.2), Star with 14.7% (+0.6) and Power 100 with 11.2% (+0.4).
In the demos, Hit is #1 in the under-40s, with Triple M topping the 40+.
In breakfast, Triple M’s Pricey (who is retiring at the end of this year) takes the top spot with 20.3% (-0.7), followed by Hit’s Cliffo & Bronte with 19.1% (-6.8), Star (breakfast team not specified on their website) with 16.1% (+1.5), and Power 100’s Archie & Bretz with 11.6% (+1.3). In drive, Hit’s Carrie & Tommy had a narrow win with 18.7% (-8.0), followed closely by Triple M’s Rush Hour with 18.5% (-0.6), Will & Woody on Star with 15.5% (+2.3), and Power 100’s Wildy with 13% (+1.5).
The “Other Stations” ratings this survey is at 16.5%, up 2.9 from last year.
This is interesting, Anthony and Crystal appear to have only finished after survey, station Instagram post of 15 September.
The usual career fork in the road, better opportunities outside of regional radio/Townsville.
The wider Townsville results show the music formats are what’s dominating listening choices. Been clear for a few years that the lack of a market specific log for 4TO/MMM has reduced the long lead the station once had. Steve Price remains competitive and good on him for his final survey.
Big losses at Hit Townsville.
Any word on what has happened to the Star106.3 breakfast team? Who was it previously?
Both SCA stations are on top of the ratings ,Pricey is as popular as ever, that’s why Triple M are the No 1 station.HE will be missed on air after he retires.
I’ve spotted the bright blue SCA studio building on my last few visits up there,it really stands out
Today, we’re off to my home town: Campbelltown in Outer South West Sydney! ![]()
This survey provides some insights that GfK doesn’t want you to know on its Sydney surveys.
KIIS 1065 is #1 with 21.3%, with local station C91.3 2nd with 13%, followed by 2GB with 9.6%, WSFM with 8.2%, Smooth with 7.4%, 2MMM with 6.4%, Nova with 6%, and CADA with 5.2%. 2SM rated 0.1%.
In the demos, KIIS is #1 in the under-55s, with C91.3 2nd in the 25-39s & 40-54s. CADA outrates both C91.3 & Nova in the 18-24s. Smooth is #1 in the 55-64s, with 2GB 2nd & C91.3 3rd, whilst in the 65+, 2GB is #1, followed by ABC Sydney & 2UE, who both tied 2nd.
In breakfast, KIIS’s Kyle & Jackie O is #1 with 25%, followed by C91.3’s Ally Redondo with 13.1%, 2GB’s Ben Fordham with 9.9%, and WS’s Jonesy & Amanda with 8.3%. In drive, Will & Woody on KIIS is #1 with 17.5%, followed by C91.3’s Jason Bouman with 13.2%, Nova’s Rickie-Lee, Tim & Joel with 8.4%, Smooth with 8.1%, and WS with 7.8%.
Wow. When was the last time Campbelltown had its own survey?
I wonder if we could get Blue Mountains & Lithgow to also have one??
Apparently, Nielsen had a survey for Campbelltown back in 2003, judging by this radio ratings schedule from that year. Whether it went ahead or not is uncertain.
2003RadioRatingsSchedule.PDF (32.0 KB)
Campbelltown did have a Nielsen survey back in 2002, less than a year after C91.3 first went to air.
I should also mention that CADA outrated Nova in the 25-39s as well.
Same cume figure for 1170 SEN and 2SM has to be my highlight of this, especially as SEN gets the higher “not in control of the radio” share of 10-17s.
John Laws seems to hold up 2SM entirely, with the 0.9 share in mornings matching RN and beating SEN/ABC Classic/NewsRadio. 2SM’s breakfast though is dismal - I wonder how much better they’d be doing if they still had Marcus Paul rather than piping in 2HD?
Either way, given the high priced talent at SEN and big investment in buying the station, if this is reflective of Sydney more generally, it’s such a waste - especially as 2SM’s Talkin Sport afternoons is pretty close in Drive.
What do C91.3 do wrong in evenings? Weirdly massive drop in that daypart, everything else looks solid, and seems pretty good for a local option competing against the big Sydney stations.
Why wasn’t yesterday’s Campbelltown results lined up against their previous survey results?
I’m guessing C91.3 is no longer number 1 in the region which could explain why? As I’m guessing it was probably WIN Radio who funded part of this survey as well.
WIN will have funded all of the survey.
…and still didn’t come out on top.
Because there hasn’t been one under Xtra Insights’ format before. For most usual markets they are done on a three or four year cycle which, given Xtra took over in 2016, meant there is at least one survey under the belt for those markets.
The original ones would have been desired to gauge the initial effect of C91.3; after that it’s been sort of… well… people know it exists, they probably have the numbers they need in that market without getting a proper survey.
This ends up doubly interesting though because you normally don’t get numbers for the likes of 2SM and especially Cada - but it’s not like you’re ever going to see a separate Blue Mountains/Penrith survey to see how the latter still goes in its traditional “home” market.
It is, of course, worth noting that C91.3’s survey area does include some parts where I wonder where the FM signals (other than the 88.3 WSFM repeater) are marginal, especially with Picton being in such a valley - sometimes I wish there were public numbers on both sides of Mount Razorback but the survey size for the Wollondilly side would be too small.
Lack of local flavour I guess. There’s likely no separate show or even announcer anymore, much like any other music station after hours, but even when it did it was the one most likely to be networked out of i98 in Wollongong (WIN at least realised that networking the rest of the workday was a mistake). Once the local news/traffic/whatever winds up at 7pm or so, why wouldn’t you stray to someone else that probably does the format you like better? (And that could be Kiis, Nova, or even Cada in the western Syd markets.)
Oh wow! I only just noticed (thanks to your post) that 2SM is included.
Very interesting figures.
Not as low as 1170SEN, and giving the ABC’s a bit of a run for their money.
Mornings (Laws) is clearly their strongest time slot.
Not as bad as first thought. I could imagine the broader Sydney survey would be a little stronger for 2SM if they were included.
