Regional Radio Ratings

Today, we’re off to Emerald: https://www.commercialradio.com.au/RA/media/General/Documents/Surveys%20for%20Regional/EMERALD-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RELEASE.pdf?ext=.pdf

Hit 94.7 continues to dominate with a 42.8% share (+3.2 from 2021), followed by ABC Capricornia at a distant 2nd with 15.6% (-0.3) and 4HI with 14.2% (+1.4).

In the demos, Hit dominates in the under-55s, with 4HI topping the 55-64s and ABC Capricornia dominating in the 65+.

The “Other Stations” ratings is at 24.2%, down from 28.6% in 2021.

I guess so they can work out what ad rates to charge and why… eg… we are charging you $ xx because eg. 40% or XXXX number of people listen to us.

I wonder if/when the town will get Triple J… a lot of towns smaller than Emerald have it via a self help relay… I thought I did read somewhere that 97.1 had been allocated for it.

The Emerald licence covers a much larger area including many self help transmitters at mine sites. One upon a time I understand this made it one of the more profitable licence areas in Qld outside of the large coastal towns. It even had overnight local programming (and then networked to sister stations) well after most other stations ditched it.

The LAP population for Emerald RA1 was 46,595 in 2021.

The regional population is much larger than just the town of Emerald.

Another regional area where the original AM station is in dire need of FM conversion.

Some of the mining relays of 4HI are on FM- though they have been known to relay directly from the AM!

4RFM Moranbah provides a good alternative to parts of the Emerald area. They are a fairly mainstream operation. Not sure if they would account for some of the ‘Other’ surveys.

Pretty much. Emerald itself is about 15k, but it extends north to Moranbah (almost 9k), out to Blackwater (5k), Dysart (3k) and so on. A whole bunch of small towns around it, but those towns of 500 or so add up. Plus the mining towns, plus the relative proximity to Rockhampton (the eastern edge of the licence area is only an hour’s drive away; Emerald is three).

It’s still only on a “one survey every three years” schedule, but the 2020 survey looks like it got pushed out to 2021 after the issues with Covid.

Given they’re effectively “the” local station for Moranbah, I wouldn’t doubt that there’d be a reasonable chunk in the “most listened” bucket in the “other” column for them.

Today, it’s off to Mildura: https://xtrainsights.com/media/2658/mildura_survey1_2023.pdf

Not a bad result for an AM station, River at 16%

Agree, only a couple of % points behind MMM.

It would be pretty embarrassing for SCA to be beaten by an AM music station.

That should be a wake up call to SCA, but probably won’t be.

Agree. It’s happened before though when 4KQ beat 4MMM a few times

And more recently when 2UE would beat 2DayFM… along with the success of Cruise1323 Adelaide and 4BH Brisbane.

Though I think it would be even more embarrassing in a regional area where there are only 3 commercial stations.

I’d happily take the demo numbers of MMM (with SCA holding 65% of the 40-54 market, and even more of the lower demos, especially when you exclude JJJ’s non-commercial numbers - albeit primarily through Hit FM) over River’s any day though. Although the headline number looks close for publicity purposes, the SCA Sunraysia sales folk would be pretty happy about that.

When you operate 2 of the 3 commercials, that should be about par for the course.

that’s a big gap between 7HO/Hit and Triple M, and Triple M beaten by Triple J. What’s wrong with Triple M down there?

Still a lot of people who haven’t forgiven Triple M for sacking Dave Noonan. Or hiring Spoonman.

Best showing for 7HO since a 22.9 in S1/1999.
