Regional Radio Ratings

Not to mention regional ratings are massively flawed. The system in which they collect the data should have been changed years ago, and it’s the same for metro. I know metro is introducing new systems but it’s ridiculous.

I’d never expect to hear people putting the ABC on in public places, buses, stores, etc all would put on music stations. 3BA and Power rate on par with most other 2 FM station regional radio markets, you’d expect their ratings to be significantly higher if the lower than normal ABC ratings were only explained by listening to commerical FMs.

The transmitter explanation seems more likely, but then it raises a question - are those listeners just tuning into ABC Bendigo or ABC Melbourne depending on what gives them a better signal, or are they listening to other fringe/community stations?

If poor signal is costing them significant listeners, then they probably need to look at getting a Ballarat city translator site.

I think Robbie’s right. Abc ballarat is abc ballarat and Southwest so not just ballarat, where as 3BA and Power FM are hyperlocal

Also ABC Ballarat is at the very end of the dial that may make a difference for some people. Also they don’t have a local drive show like Launceston I think does

They don’t, but the. Statewide drive show is presented and produced in Ballarat.

I suspect ABC Ballarat’s low ratings can be partly explained by overlap with Melbourne and even 594am from Horsham even though I believe it’s not as powerful as it once was, the coverage Maps show it reaching Ballarat easily. That and it’s a relatively new station.

ABC Ballarat reception is adequate in Ballarat. Yes, the CBD is in a valley, however never had a problem with reception.

The transmitter site is a fair distance west, yet is well engineered for good coverage of the main population centre.

Mildura has their ratings out today, its first since 2018: http://www.radioalive.com.au/RA/media/General/Homepage%20banners/MILDURA-XTRA-INSIGHTS-PUBLIC-SURVEY-RESULT.pdf?ext=.pdf

Hit 99.5 remains on top with 33.2% (+0.1), followed by AM music station River 1467 at 17.6% (+0.8), pushing FM station Triple M down to 3rd place with 17.1% (-1.0). ABC Mildura-Swan Hill fell 5.4% to 8.5%, followed closely by JJJ at 8% (+1.3).

In the demos, Hit is #1 in the under-55s, with River topping the 55+.

That’s clutching at straws for Triple M to be claiming demo wins only in a 3 station commercial market.

Winning Males 10+ is about all Triple M would be wanting to achieve. River just ran up their shares in 55+, I can’t see them being concerned about Triple M being technically third on account of a poor showing in the 65+ demo.

It’s a good argument for that third station existing, and Grant clearly are programming River well for a niche, but I can’t imagine it being concerning.

ABC Local Radio figures all over the place again - just a plummet in the 55-65 demo. That just screams statistical error, which I suppose is par for the course.

Shows audiences are switching off a music format that doesn’t research and develops logs for each market.

The Victorian based Steve Price would at least be useful in reducing share from Neil Mitchell on River.

In a fragmented metro market, sure. Three station regional, their target needs to be north of 1/3 of the commercial share.

I dunno. It’s still pretty bad to be beaten by an AM music station in a regional market of only 3 commercial stations.

Got to be the first time that’s happened surely?

I know they should be becoming used to it in metro markets - eg 4KQ and Cruise beating them, and even 6iX almost.

River do ok in Mildura, have quite a few of the old 3MA listeners that would find TripleM too modern. Great to see Matman still on air after 20 odd years up there, probably one of the last left from the pre DMG hub days.

@Viclistener excellent longevity by Matman. Who was the owner prior to DMG?

3MA (& FM 99.5) was owned by Broadcast Media Group, in which the company was bought out by DMG in September 1996.

At the time of DMG’s acquisition, the company also owned 2GZ/FM 105.9, 2CS, 2LF, 2RG, 2WG/FM93, 3BO, 3CV & 5SE.

Which was the evolution of ownership arising from 2RG and MTN-9 by the Gamble family and other MIA based families plus the Macquarie Bank is that right?

Yes.

Largest share for any station in the market since 1998, when Star led with a 34.1 and 103.5 had a 30.7.

That must have been when known as 4CA FM…

I don’t think 99.5 was on air then?
