Regional Radio (non-SCA)

Caralis already owns 4GY in Gympie, which has a significant overlap with the Sunshine Coast radio licence area. That’s unless he sells 4GY & then buys the two FM stations, but then, who would buy 4GY? :man_shrugging:

That’s a possibility. ACE Radio is another potential candidate, and to a much lesser extent, Capital Radio Network.

Would be interesting to see what happens to the two Sunshine Coast stations.

Capital Radio Network would be quite good outcome if that was to happen, Sea fm would go onto the Snow / Eagle fm log and Mix onto 2GN /XL Fm.

Then you would have three fm stations with quite distinct sounds in that market.
Sea CHR, Mix AC/ Gold, Hot Hot AC.

I doubt Win would be interested as there was talk at one stage of them selling i98.

That was nearly 5 years ago now, as part of an asset swap that saw WIN acquire NRN (Ten Northern NSW) from SCA, and would’ve also included SCA acquiring i98. The latter didn’t go ahead, and nothing more has been developed about it since then.

However, now with WIN back to being a Nine affiliate for the next 7 years, and with reports that it would eventually be taken over by Nine themselves, I reckon that when the time comes, SCA could try to acquire i98 again, whilst C91.3 would be acquired by Grant.

Resonate Broadcasting. They already own stations in QLD. Too left field?

SEN would have to be looking at least acquiring one of the stations and maybe selling the other off?

I haven’t actually thought about them until you mentioned it.

Perhaps SEN could purchase 4GY from Caralis, in which he would then in exchange acquire Sea FM & Mix FM. Perhaps 4GY under SEN would use a similar model to that of SEN Spirit in Bunbury to comply with local content rules.

I see this as the most likely outcome but I’ve been surprised before.

As part of the SRN, Mix would become an AM talk back clone on FM and both Sea and Mix will drop out of the ratings.

If that’s to be the case, then Grant’s Hot 91 & (to a slightly lesser extent) Zinc 96 would become the big winners out of all this.

That would be ridiculous Sea / Mix dropping out of the ratings considering the size of the market and it’s proximity to Brisbane. If that was to happen they just won’t have any future surveys for that market. Also fortuitous listening to Brisbane would increase significantly if Sea became New fm and Mix 2HD / 2SM.

OR would we just see a total newcomer into the industry? The same way EON was kind of new.

Yes, that would be a good outcome.

Rebel Media acquiring at least one of the stations would also be a good outcome.

This is a good move as I don’t think either station is as good as they once were under SCA.

Me personally I’d love to see Capital but it but it’s hard to say what will happen.

Can Nova Entertainment purchase them? Or is the overlap too great.

No they can’t, due to 30%+ overlap with Brisbane RA1.

That doesn’t leave many options. I have a feeling maybe a local co-op will buy in?

Either way it would be nice to finally cut ties with all the SCA syndication.

I doubt they’ll buy Sea/Mix Sunshine Coast, as ACE seem happy to be sticking with stations based in Victoria.

That’s probably the most likely scenario.

Either way, let’s hope that neither SEN or SRN/BOG get these stations.

As well as the border region of NSW such as 2AY Albury & 2QN Deniliquin, which their licence areas do cover a fair number of populated centres in VIC.

However, ACE did own 2WL/Wave FM in Wollongong from 1988 until 1995, which was the only station they owned outside of VIC at the time.

Oh boy I would LOVE Rebel to buy one or both stations. Breeze 92.7 would be amazing for the Sunshine Coast hey @AJ1

Definitely, would be great for Sunshine Coast listeners and people living in Brisbane’s Northside. Rebel 91.9 or Breeze 92.7 would be fantastic (or both).

Actually Rebel and Breeze would have continuous coverage from Sunshine Coast through Brisbane to the Gold Coast then, as Rebel 90.5 and Breeze 92.1 cover Brisbane southside.

That would be a good option too, and give good fortuitous reception of Breeze and Rebel into Brisbane, and offer a choice between Triple M and 97.3. The worst thing that could happen is SRN buys these stations and they become irrelevant.

I wonder how cashed up Resonate Broadcasting is. They’d possibly do similar to what Caralis would do and turn Mix into Country music and Ray Hadley (Hot Country) and Sea into a West FM (Charleville, Longreach and Charters Towers) clone.
