Rebel Media

I think that might be somewhat true for Rebel FM, but I’ve been to places like Childers and Stanthorpe and Breeze is on in shops and cafes everywhere.

On the flip side I find both offerings from SRN and SCA don’t suit me. I’d much rather Breeze/Rebel.

I live in the Scenic Rim.

Rebel are my stations.

(Even though I can’t actually pick them up where I live, but when I’m on the road to places I need to go to like Beauie).

Exactly. You’ve hit the nail on the head. It’s OK for these people who live in Brisbane to like Breeze for the novelty value.

But I actually live in an area where there is no choice apart from Rebel.

So if I’m driving to Beauie and have to listen to three flops and Winer in America all in a row. I’m just going to switch off.

And people may say ‘suck sh*t’ that’s what you deserve living in a rural area.

Fine. We have a Breeze fan here on Mediaspy who loves Breeze among all his other radio choices.

But for those of us who actually live in the Scenic Rim (where Rebel first started), with no other options… it’d be nice to be driving into Beauie listening to great music and not three flops and a song that only made it to number 38.

That’s fine too, we all like different things.

But would you prefer to be able to hear the same bunch of songs every day on Triple M?

I think a blend of say Rebel and Triple M, or a blend of Gold and Breeze would be more pleasing to many listeners, where you get a mix of familiarity and some nice “wow” surprises thrown in.

Lionel Richie to Chappell Roan just now.

It fit. Sounded fine. But the music is definitely tighter overnight than during Days.

Exactly. As you have always said, the programming on Breeze is shite and a MMM format with a little bit of Breeze variety would be preferable to the ‘high school radio’ programming approach that Rebel currently adopts.

You talk about ‘wow’ surprises but you’re not going to get that with the obscure flops that Rebel current play. There’s plenty of rubbish music out there and you’ll hear more of it on Rebel stations than anywhere else.

Just because a song is a flop, doesn’t make it playlist worthy.

Take for example: Sara Bareilles - I Choose You played at a ¼ to 4 this afternoon on Breeze. Plenty of people in their cars at that time, school pick up, tradies on their way home, all that sort of stuff.

No one would have known this song. It’s just a rubbish B-side form 2013. No wow factor there mate.

Yep. I agree. Stuck on you, into Good luck babe. Works.

We need more programming like this. And less haphazard stuff.

TBH I’m actually quite liking Breeze atm, because I believe they have tightened up their playlist (fewer flops). For these people who live in Brisbane who want more flops because it adds more variety to their radio choice. Sorry. Go listen to a community station. Breeze is becoming more professional and more listener-focused.

Just for the record, I’ve never said that.

Of course, not with every “obscure” song they play, but there will be some. Last time I looked, they play about 1,800 different songs a week, I know there’ll be some gems in amongst that.

I think the key is is to not go too obscure or unfamiliar whilst at the same time not overplaying the more familiar. This of course means different things to different people, so they’ll never get a playlist that will please everyone.

It’s been a while.

So probably need to check how Breeze is currently doing.

I’ve been listening to Hokonui today, a station that does this format 1000% better than Rebel do. So I just thought I’d check on a few things.

Breeze are still obsessed with flops:

2025-04-26 12:40:51 AEST Katie Melua The Closest Thing To Crazy

Who even knows this song? Peaked at #43 and received no air play at the time whatsoever, except maybe on SUN FM.

2025-04-26 12:08:49 AEST Fastball Fire Escape

Flop.

2025-04-26 11:39:27 AEST The Robertson Brothers Daddy’s Gone

Scholck. Just rubbish.

2025-04-26 10:06:02 AEST The Verve Lucky Man 4m 54s 1997

Know one knows it. Just a self-indulgent PD puts this on their playlist. Peaked at #60 on the ARIA charts.

There are plenty more flops from today’s playlist, which is all totally disjointed and haphazard.

For example: These three songs have just been randomly thrown together without any thought. AI could program better than this:

|2025-04-26|11:06:05 AEST|[Garbage]|[Stupid Girl]
|2025-04-26|11:10:06 AEST|[Michael Jackson]|[Don’t Stop 'Til You Get Enough]6m 5s|1979||
|2025-04-26|11:16:47 AEST|[Ariana Grande]|[We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)]

So disjointed and ill-fitted.

I challenge you to listen to Hokonui and then compare it to Breeze. For some reason the Kiwis seem to have a much better grasp of how to do this format that what we do.

This is your personal opinion and quite misguided. Rebel and Breeze are quite niche formats, that is correct, but they actually play music that hasnt been heard in ages, or before, in my case.

I think you dont understand what @AJ1 and his team are trying to do. They are trying to push the envelope of commercial radio. And I for one champion this, even though weve had our disagreements in the past.

Maybe just give it a chance and u might enjoy the tracks

I was driving out to Wyaralong Dam the other day. 92.1 and 90.5 are pretty much all we can receive out here. After two obscure songs in a row on Breeze I changed to Rebel and after about 5 seconds of some trash B-side a family member goes ‘just turn it off’.

Just turn it off. We would rather drive in silence than listen to the tat on the local stations because they are:

Channel X is a great example of a station that pushes the boundaries of commercial radio.

They just played:

2025-04-27 04:15:02 NZST The Mutton Birds Anchor Me
4m 30s 1994
2025-04-27 04:19:01 NZST La Bouche Be My Lover
4m 0s 1995
2025-04-27 04:23:02 NZST Goo Goo Dolls Slide
3m 32s 1998

Wow. Three songs from the 90s, but they’re not a 90s station. And no station in the 90s would have played these three songs together. But guess what? It worked. And they’ve done their research, plus they just have that professionalism that comes from knowing. That’s great programming right there. That’s why Channel X can sound so ‘fresh’, as I’m listening now they just went from Madness ‘Our House’ to Seven Nation Army. Seamless and perfect.

It’s an understanding of the music.

Once again, Kiwis showing us how to do this format, and Aussies failing miserably.

You obviously haven’t listened to Old Skool 90s or KIIS 90s or Nova 90s or even Nova Throwbacks.

I’ve heard La Bouche and Goo Goo Dolls on all of these stations as well as a lot of other good 90s songs.

Channel X is a worse version of a mix of MMM 90s / MMM 2000s.
