The Sunshine Coast version gets the same “consumer” Aldi sales/ save money report to close out the news before the weather as is shown in Brisbane.

We still get the occasional “save money” story - but they don’t feature every night. Also, no mention of Aldi (that I’ve seen).

Got to love people nowadays.

I live in a gated complex - shared between permanent residents and holiday stay apartments.

Arrived home to discover someone inside the complex has driven straight into the side of one of our cars and left massive dents and white paint all over the car and left no note

Oh no, the offending vehicle should be easy to spot?

My guess it was a visitor who won’t be back anytime soon.

Yeah, I’m fairly sure it would have been a visitor.
Of the other permanent residents who park in the same area, none own white cars.

I agree. It’s bizarre.

Nothing’s safe any more. Even street murals are being commercialised.

I really don’t watch that much traditional TV like I used to anymore. Is that a bad thing? I’m just wondering because I use to be glued to shows on Nine, Ten and ABC and I have lost interest and just watch those shows over the 'net.

Maybe you need a new Username then?

I recently made a complaint to the Advertising Standards Bureau about a series of BMW ads which have been running online on Facebook and Youtube pre-roll ads. It’s been just over a month and I still haven’t heard back from them, but I expect them to post the report online soon.

I filed the complaint because I wanted to see how the process worked, but also because I was also a bit motivated by the fact that I really hate the way that they’re pandering to the thuggish, aggressive and reckless BMW driver stereotype. The driving at the end of these ads is clearly in violation of the FCAI advertising code in that you can’t show a stock standard car being driven recklessly (burnouts, drifting), even if the car is being driven on a private track.

Also, the first ad here shows a dad deliberately moving the car around (spinning the wheels at one point) just to fuck around with his kid. That kind of immature crap while in control of a 2 tonne car is how children get run over and killed, yet they’re portraying it as a ‘cool’ thing to do. Other car ads have been pulled off the air for far less than that.

It looks like they’ve pulled the ads from the BMW Australia Facebook page (the posts appear to have been removed), so it looks like I might be in for a win (an upheld complaint)!!!

Hope this is the appropriate thread for this.

I was walking to school today and encountered a man collecting bottles for recycling. I only passed by him on the way, yet he had the nerves to call me a Chinese c**t. I just left him to do what he does (although I would’ve given him a blow to his mind if 1. He wasn’t so buff like many racist people in Australia and 2. I lost my mind), but it reminded me of the time Ch9 reporter Neary Ty was bullied by a racist f*cker. Scary times.

Here’s a story of mine where I was racially abused.

I was involved in a bit of a boo boo where I crashed into a bus. Essentially what happened was, it had started absolutely pissing down raining and flash flooding was starting to happen on the road I was on. I continued down the road and found myself looking straight ahead at a bunch of cars that were bobbing up and down in floodwater about 500 metres ahead. Not wanting to start floating myself, I looked for a way out and I saw there was a street coming up on the left which led to a substantial hill where I’d be safe to wait out for this flooding to stop.

So anyway, I exited the left lane because it appeared to be too deep to travel in safely, with the plan being that I’d cut across the flooded lane to turn left so there was less chance of my car getting stuck in the water. Big mistake. I make the turn without checking my mirror (I’m fucking panicking from the thought of getting stranded, and was focusing on getting through the water here), and it turns out that a bus is plowing through the water in the left lane and we collide.

So I get out of my car in the pissing rain and a bloke comes up to me and confronts me, understandably pissed off. I profusely apologise. He continues telling me how I’m a shit driver for maybe another thirty seconds and all the while, he’s acting in a very threatening way. The driver eventually comes out and tells him to calm down and take a seat.

So I get on the bus, give the driver my licence to take down the details and I apologise to the rest of the passengers. The guy who confronted me takes his seat again. He starts muttering shit out loud about me. Dumb Chinese cunt, can’t drive cause you’re Chinese, can’t see out through your slit eyes, go back to China, etc.

I’m not Chinese, by the way.

Since the gentleman had the courtesy to assume my ethnicity, I’ll do the same here. This guy was quite clearly an Indigenous fellow.

I was considering whether I should tell this bloke off for racially abusing me (yes I crashed into the bus, but is that EVER a reasonable excuse to racially abuse someone??!?!?), but the way he appeared ready to fight me when I got out of the car, I thought best just to leave it. The other passengers were clearly not going to step in for some guy who just crashed into their bus, either.

As I left that bus and went back to my car, I noticed there were now several other buses up ahead which were stuck in the floodwaters.

Turned out there was no damage to the bus or my car in the end, probably because my car was half floating in water at the point of impact.

I get that the Indigenous population are pissed that the European settlers took over their land, but is that an excuse to hurl racial abuse at people? Them hurling racial abuse at innocent people only makes people like us stronger, and their actions are despicable sometimes. Like, sure this is your land but does that allow you to do everything you like? Don’t mind them being angry, but hurling racial abuse and personally attacking others makes them pigs who don’t know what they’re doing.

I think some may be pissed off not just at the English but at anyone who looks different to them & therefore doesn’t belong on their land. I can imagine how that logic may work, and (unfortunately) the same attitude exists in pretty much any country in the world (including by idiot descendants of immigrants to the country), but it’s still wrong to abuse people because of their race, etc.

When I read that it evoked disturbing memories of an attitude from Nazi Germany (possibly because I’ve been reading WW2 history recently).
Might doesn’t equal right, but sadly all too often strength does win regardless of what’s right or wrong.

End of an era as Mediaweek plans to stop its printed edition and go digital-only.

I used to subscribe to the magazine in the late 90s and early 2000s (and unfortunately I didn’t get many of them) but unfortunately it was never a cheap magazine so other financial commitments meant I had to ditch my subscription. But hopefully come 2018 they might have some more cost effective subscriptions given it will be digital-only.

I used to buy both Ad News and B&T in the 1980s and 1990s. B&T was weekly and Ad News was fortnightly. They were great reading. Back then I subscribed to AES, BKSTS Image Technology, SMPTE and often bought Variety. I’ve rarely purchased any actual magazine to read the past ten years.

I used to subscribe to B&T as well but again only kept a handful of them sadly. It was considerably cheaper than MediaWeek. But I cancelled that subscription when the magazine’s emphasis went from media to become almost entirely about advertising and marketing.

I never subscribed to Adnews but did used to buy it on occasions. I still have about half a dozen issues from the early 90s.

I recently came across a Cyclist in Canberra who uploads videos yet alone hurling abuse but she has a horn! An actual horn! Not a ‘ ding ding bell ‘! Anyway in one of the videos she claims a Bus is in the wrong by being in the bike lane saying that the driver should of gave way… but there are signs all over the bus telling traffic to give way to them. See for yourself here, it starts at 2.08 :

That last bus that supposedly got in her way, well there was an off-road cycle path to the left in the video - that’s where I would have been rather than on the road.

Agreed! Why wouldn’t you use that left path.
