Radio History

Thanks. I found an article that mentioned that "every character is listening to KHJ, likely because KHJ was the coolest in the land. " It is now mentioned on Wiki in their entry on the soundtrack to the movie.

Not sure if 4KQ ever had an association with the station though.

However, in about 1976 2SM broadcast from the studios of KHJ for a weekend, including some LA news, commercials and idents.

and wouldn’t you know it, they’ve included it on the film’s soundtrack!

The Everclear song “AM radio” (very minor “hit” in 2000) had a sound bite for KHJ at the start

Just uploaded clip of the 2SM broadcast from KHJ “via satellite”. I believe it was 1976 and included LA news and some commercials. Includes one of the best station idents you will hear.

and same with Bay FM and 3XY in the early 1990s

technically they were across two different markets although there was a lot of overlap between them

I actually wonder if that would be a problem today? If say Bay FM simulcast with an AM Melbourne station would ACMA object these days? In these days of networking would they have any grounds to object as long as it didn’t break the 2 station rule?

That scenario probably wouldn’t be be an issue as they are separate markets.

I wonder why it was an issue back then?

I think the considerable overlap between Geelong and Melbourne markets might have been problematic having 2 stations with the same program. I could pick up Bay FM but reception was always a bit patchy so I stuck with 3XY where I almost had line of sight to the their transmitter (before they shifted it out to Altona or someplace)

Eventually they split 3XY back to a separate program but was still operating from the Bay FM studios down in Geelong.

Also, wasn’t there a similar metro-regional simulcast between one of the Brisbane AMs and 4QFM? I vaguely remember something of that back in the 90s? Or maybe it was just joint ownership maybe wasn’t a simulcast? Someone who knows Brisbane radio in the day will correct me I’m sure

No I don’t recall any simulcasting of QFM in Brisbane. There was a bit of argy bargy though over QFM advertising within Brisbane IIRC.

But that’s the scenario I’m thinking about. What if River 94.9 somehow acquired 4BH, would they be allowed to simulcast River on 882 these days?

This is what I must have been thinking of. I confused it as being simulcast

4BH was relocated from Spring Hill to shared studios at the 106.9 QFM building in North Ipswich (now River 94.9).

Yes they were co-located at the QFM studios at Ipswich for a while but didn’t share programming as such.

Incorrect - ESP consulted for both Q & BH

What I meant was they didn’t simulcast.

I know I am replying to my own post but…It’s funny how 2DayFM and Triple M are nowadays almost rating where they were in 1981. Who would have guessed? Both stations would start off slowly in 1980…take Sydney by storm…and then sink back to the bottom of the pack.

There are more stations around than in 1981, and there’s several AM stations below them still.

There also wasn’t streaming and the internet for competition either back then.

It’s certainly interesting how Sydney’s two original commercial FM stations are now the lowest rating in the market.

Now I’m more than aware that 2DayFM was still quite a successful station (with the possible exception of that weird period between the end of The Morning Crew and the start of Kyle & Jackie O) until about six years ago, but the very long and gradual demise of Triple M probably started way back on June 1, 1993?
