Radio History

Nowadays, even if there was space on the FM band, the ACMA would probably refuse to accept applications for a new license.

WCBS-AM = 'CBS-FM was never news.

(musicradio77.com and nyrmb.com)

The 60 Minutes report was all about FM radio in New York. They played multiple clips of music formats, and especially liked Walt ‘Baby’ Love on 99X . There was mention of WCBS and by the clips played it certainly sounded like it was on FM based on the jingle.

The fact that there was an all-news station seemed to be of particular interest and presented as surprising. Though I was familiar with the concept due to reception of KNX from Los Angeles on occasions via DX across the Pacific. It seemed strange at the time that there would be a news station on FM though.

Thanks for this; it’s clear that there was some attempt to retain 2WS as a Western Sydney station even after its FM conversion. Horsley Park (current SWR site) would have worked imo.

Also: you can do just about anything, but when someone’s TV reception is affected there is hell to pay!

And Western Sydney is even bigger now.

Sadly.

What i meant though is that it could be its own licence area and have enough revenue to support its own radio stations.

Long time 2RG breakfast host Allan Wallett passed away on Monday, aged 82. He had been with 2RG (Now Triple M Riverina MIA) for over 40 years and retired in 2016 after SCA ceased music from being played by CD (putting an end to his way of playing Country Music).

Yes, Newsradio 88 WCBS was the AMer. 101.1 'CBS-FM was the FM oldies station.

Anyone got a 774 aircheck of Doug Aiton’s ending theme tune?

2GO Gosford was one station that didn’t hold back on newspaper advertising/coverage… as evidenced in my earlier posts in it’s frequency changes of 1986 and 1992.

And it’s launch in 1971 at midday on Friday 19th November 1971 on was no exception…

(all from the ‘Central Coast Express’).

2GO also appeared to be jumping the gun a bit with the advertising of the 9 khz spacing change, which only took place on 23rd November 1978

Could’ve gone with 2 weeks 2GO.

No Go Go mobile here, though

Their callsign is still 2GGO… and it doesn’t have a dart…

13-10 2GO

Yep. They made huge waves in Bendigo too at the time. Great format and a transmitter that carried the signal much further than they originally anticipated.

Sun FM was also a regular DX catch in QLD.

Noticed that not a single Brisbane radio station seen on this radio currently exists either in name or dial position. 4QG and 4QR aren’t known by those names anymore. 4BK is B105, 4BH moved to 880 then 1116 and 4BC moved to 882. 4IP is now 4TAB. The same applies to the majority of the stations in adjacent markets.

Although in Melbourne I can still tune into “AR” (now Radio National), “LO” (ABC Radio Melbourne) and “UZ” (RSN) at those dial positions and they’d still be there.

Weirdly, I’d still get “XY” but not the Hot Hits variety, but the Greeks’ 3XY Radio Hellas :stuck_out_tongue:
