Oh wow. So was Gary pushed to make way for Jones at breakfast and Laws in mornings? Was this at the same time John Brennan took over? Or was he already PD with Gary at breakfast?
I’m imagining it was a strict talkback formula which was Brennan’s firm vision (and boy was it a success).
The Perth ABC FM conversion allocations included a reason that NewsRadio would stay on AM due to legislative requirements. That’s probably why in Wollongong, a city over 50 000.
John Brennan had been at 2UE since at least 1983. Laws left for 2GB and Jones replaced him in mornings. Mike Carlton (breakfast) and Laws (mornings) made a formidable combination at 2GB. When Laws returned to 2UE, Alan Jones was moved to breakfast and Gary was moved to weekends. The Alan / Laws combination was successful radio and came to an end when Alan moved to 2GB and the Jones / Hadley era began.
So the successful breakfast-morning combinations were:
But Mike Carlton at 2GB Breakfast with John Laws on 2GB Mornings surely didn’t rate better than Gary on 2UE Breakfast did it? And was Alan Jones making good ground in his 2UE Mornings shift? Or did he really need Laws there to boost his slot?
Here is Survey 3 from 1987. The Carlton-Laws combination had well and truly pushed 2GB into the No.1 position. No wonder 2UE paid a lot of cash to get Laws back in ‘88.
