Radio History

Would it be right that people would write in and apply to go out with someone they profiled?

Tell me more? Was it Perfect Match era?

Not sure, but Peter Mobbs and Chris Fletcher were prominent night time DJs (as Mobbs and Fletch) on the station around that era.

Might have been when they were on, I’ll have a look at some old Newcastle radio guides I’ve got to see if that clarifies anything and let you know.

to be honest I don’t know/recall.

EON-FM Melbourne (which became Triple M during the below time period) also had Desperate and Dateless, which was a regular (possibly weekly) segment hosted by John Peters and part of his weeknight (7-10pm) show. It was on the air in late 1988 and in 1989 and possibly earlier and/or later.

During the segment, there was desperate and dateless guest who was in the studio. Several others would call up. The desperate person would ask a few questions (about 3) and after each question, followed by an ad break, callers would give their answers. I can’t remember if people had to call up at the beginning of the segment or could call after any question. The desperate person would choose one of the callers based on the answers and they’d win something like dinner for two.

Usually the desperate person would be a regular person, but sometimes they’d be a guest star, e.g. one time it was Mandy Smith (who had a song in the Top 8 At 8 at the time). Another time it was someone from the Dick Wittington (an entertainment venue known for their double entedres) and the questions were full of such double entendres.

The documentary series “The Australians” hosted by Peter Luck has an episode about CHY pre-FM in 1980. It used to be on Youtube but is not there anymore.

Yes it was called “Matchmakers” and it was like a radio version of Perfect Match. It ended around the same time 3KZ became KZ-FM.

3MMM had a similar show “Desperate and Dateless”, every year around Valentines Day they organised a “Desperate and Dateless Ball” at somewhere like Luna Park in St Kilda where singles meet each other. It was a fundraiser for some charity, and it lasted for years under MMM sponsorship even after the radio show ended.

I wondered if anyone who met on these radio shows ended up getting married and if they are still married today?

I would also like to know this!

Oh wow ok. I used to listen to EON as I did my homework but I don’t recall this. The only things I remember of that time was the Frank N Furter radio show but figure it was on another station. My friends and I would be laying in our beds listening to it.

I heard this show on KZFM shortly after it converted to FM so it lasted at least a bit longer.

i think that was on 3XY not EON?

I just heard the song Duncan on YouTube and that reminded me I vaguely remember a version in which one of the verses mentions 3DB. This song came out around late 1980 or early 1981. Does anyone remember this? Were there any other versions for any other radio stations?

Yes according to Wikipedia. I remember the verse included the announcer’s first name and something about 3DB, but I can’t remember who the announcer was.

From Wikipedia:

The single was released on EMI’s Columbia label in November 1980 and was played by John Laws on radio station 2UE eleven times the first morning.[5] In order to assist in promoting the song Dusty provided special recordings which included the radio announcers’ names. The official video for the song was filmed at the Town and Country Hotel and starts with Duncan Urquhart sitting to Dusty’s left and Pat Alexander to Dusty’s right.[6]

Yes. It was “I’d love to have a beer with Dennis” after Dennis Scanlan.

Other songs that had special editions for radio stations that I recall were We Built This City (celebrating 40 years now) and the Happy Days theme song.

Were Top 40 programs on regional AM stations popular in the 90s?
The 90s were the darkest decade for AM radio, as FM was dominating in the cities and expanding rapidly

I can tell you that 5AU, 5CS, 5CC, 5RM, 4ZR, 4SB all used to take top 40 shows in the 90’s.. I used to find reels orf take40 Australia in cupboards.. including at the transmitter sites
but what you have to take into account is there was no FMs so the AM’s where the jack of all trades

Also LMFAO’s “I’m In Miami Bitch” had versions that mentioned a different US city instead of Miami and were played on radio stations there.

There is one on Youtube that was made for WCBS-FM in New York City that had their announcers doing the DJ talk segment of the song.

That’s what happened at 4IP in Brisbane as well.
