WIN3 used to suffer from interference. I remember staying at a hotel in the Wollongong CBD some years ago and the TV was tuned to Channel 3. The interference, whilst not overly bad, made it a pain to watch. I suspect it was FM radio and NBN3 causing the issues.
The primary audio carrier for WIN3 was 91.76, offset slightly from NBN3 (vision carrier= 86.26 MHz instead of 86.25). Just before analogue switchoff they changed the audio carrier to exactly 91.7 MHz; I suspect this was because very few people were actually watching WIN3 at that point and only using it to listen to the news on the commute home.
There were also WIN3 transmitters at Narooma (active until switchoff) and Eden (switched off some time in the late 90s/early 2000s)? Not sure why Eden got the chop early but not Narooma.
Listening to 3DB on my new clock radio around 1979. The 3XY signal wasnât great but 3DB was crystal clear. 3DB was fantastic until they changed format and replaced Peter Harrison with Ernie Sigley at Breakfast. From then on it was 3XY until they changed to Easy Rock then it was EON FM / MMM.
Thanks heaps, took a while but Iâve finally got there.
Yep! So far so good though. Did try archive dot org but after repeated errors and their tech support unable to tell me what was going on I ditched it and went for Youtube. Soundcloud wanted $119/year for unlimited time (couldnât afford it), and I was then looking towards my original webhost, VentraIP, but I wouldnât have been able to keep up the monthly cost.
Much thanks!
Re Coast Rock FM,
I recently ended up with a DAT of their jingles. Just âCoast Rock FM jinglesâ written on the inlay - and of course what happens? My DAT deck starts playing up. Working on it..
July 1 1984
Probably one of the biggest moments in Brisbane radio history. The opening of the new Auchenflower studios of Radio 10!
I have a close friend who was there that day - she says when she got to see Boy George she yelled âitâs a miracle!â.
When I look back through the annuls of Australian radio history I donât think there has ever been anything else like this, prior or since.
It was before my time and i donât have a reliable source, but apparently around 1976, Bay City Rollers fans were in their thousands on Spencer Street when the band visited 3XY, which had its studios in the old The Age building. Some eager fans are said to have tried to sneak into the building to look for their idols.
Re: Boy George. Similar to his appearance at the Radio 10 studios, i think he faced a crowd of massive proportions when 5AD hosted his appearance at Rundle Mall. I donât think he was performing in Adelaide, just there for a promotional visit?
Sadly that building is long gone and ironically not far from ARN studios ,home of KIIS 97.3 and the former 4KQ,
My earliest memories are of living in Melbournes northern suburbs in the early to mid 1980s (born in Sydney but have no memory of it and we moved to Melbourne in 1983) and I only remember two radio stations. Fox FM (mumâs radio station of choice) and 3KZ (dadâs radio station of choice). When we moved back to Sydney in 1985, I can remember 2UW, 2WS, 2SM, 2CH. 2DAY and 2MMM. With maternal grandparents in Canberra it was 2CA and 2CC and in Perth where the paternal grandparents were, it was 6PM and 96FM.
Listening to Arthur Burrage at breakfast time on 2FC in the early 1970âs it must have been. And a fellow named Mark Roman on 2UE (he called the show âThe Roman Empireâ)
Just found a clip from 1969:
Mark Roman : Of the âRoman Empireâ and Radio London fame. Was among the first to gain a BBC contract, and almost the first to lose it again. After a violent outburst in Disc against the state of radio in Britain, packed his bags and left for Australia where he now hosts daily show on top-rated 2UE station in Sydney.
I remember coming home from school one day in 1984 and flicking on 3ZM and hearing âOnly shooting loveâ for the first time, and I must admit it was instantly infectious. But I wasnât the only one, there was a lot of buzz around it and 3ZM were playing it every hour and there was a little âi-i-i-i-instant hitâ sting they would play before it, and next thing I heard it on 3ZC and Radio Avon and even 3ZB picked it up.
And sure enough, tune in to RTR that weekend and it was number one.
Interestingly, about nine months later I heard it on 3XY for the first time. Then 2SM. One of the few times a song was a hit in Kiwiland before Boganville.
Went microfiching today, couldnât find the articles on the frequency changes/Channel 9 i/f, could only find this ad in the âNewcastle Heraldâ re the launch of Coast Rock FM.
Posting this here as it primarily relates to the expansion of FM radio services, sadly this never happened in the analogue TV era, and even nearly 12 years after analogue switch off, we are STILL dealing with severe CCI in the summer due to this move not occurring.
(from the âNewcastle Heraldâ).
Channel 51 I believe was where they were going to shift NBN to from memory. The VHF signals were always far superior in Newcastle due to the hilly terrain.
Yes, Channel 51⌠which got reallocated to Ten for DTV during the simulcast period.
Not quite station related but definitely involved radio. Something happened when I was a kid and I have always wondered what could have caused it.
One morning around 1978 I was watching cartoons on TV when suddenly there was a whole lot of interference on the screen. Although there was lots of snow and noise, I could still see the picture and I think I could still hear the TV channel audio. I went to listen to the radio instead but the whole AM band was full of so much loud noise that I couldnât hear any radio stations at all. The same noise was there on FM and even shortwave.
This lasted for a few minutes and then it disappeared.
The TV was connected to an outdoor antenna, but the radios were indoors. This was in Melbourne, in a good signal area for both Melbourne radio and TV.
Does anyone know what could have caused this?
Probably someone using machinery nearby? Or maybe a glitch with the overhead powerlines?
