Radio History

I think that has to be the ULTIMATE and CLEAREST demand from your market, to say what they REALLY want.

The Wagga Wagga community couldn’t spell it out any clearer to SCA that they want 2WG back.

Just imagine if SCA actually listened to the community and delivered on their request? The brand & station would become an instant hero.

“You asked. We listened.” It’s the basic 101 of business. Especially given that the community initiated it on their own accord (because SCA wouldn’t).

I wonder if Port Macquarie, Kempsey or Coffs has a Roxy theatre? Perhaps they should voluntarily black out the ‘Y’ at night to send a similar message

I remember when 4BC briefly changed to a country music format ,that was when I first heard, “Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus(Miley’s dad)

It was refurbished, then reinstalled at the end of 2020. See this video for more.

Regional S39 Commercial Radio turns 35 on Monday and to celebrate here’s the original logo from stickers I found in a storage cabinet at work :ok_hand:

Nice! Were there only 5 locations used on the stickers? Walgett and Lightning Ridge don’t get one even with a local relay?

As far as i know the other 3 towns on stickers were Inverell, Warialda & Tamworth.

Collerenebri Walgett, Lightning Ridge and Mungindi Didnt get translators untill the early 2000’s with the government’s reception black spots program.

How have I never seen that previous NowFM logo!?

It’s brilliant! I would resurrect it ASAP. Same colours & all! So much better than the 90’s bubble font now.

I used love listening to 2WG in the early 90’s. From memory they had a Hot Hits format in AM stereo.

Some Audio from the 35 year history of NOW FM :sign_of_the_horns:

Imagine what it was like to be domed to AM Radio & then this 100kW FM Monster turns up right smack bang in the middle of what was a vacant FM broadcast band :flexed_biceps:

It was quite exciting at the time

were there any other FMs locally at all? community radio, or ABC FM, etc?

Oh how radio has gone downhill since those bits of audio.

Local. Ballsy. Hard-hitting.

I would definitely want to listen to THAT station.

Only 2 low powerd community radio stations in Tamworth & Armidale (range of about 30km each) and the Western parts could fringe ABC Classic FM from the Warrumbungles. But other than that the band was vacant. NOW FM was the first high power FM in the New England/Northwest (It even beat TV Aggregation up here)

Great airchecks- thanks Mr. Hat. From the songs featured I’m guessing around 1998? I’d love to hear something from 1990 if you have it.

I made them in early 1997 (Drop Editing on 4 track analogue tape)

and ask and you shall receive (3 Sweeps from the launch)

96fm Perth, first day ad, program guide with small article from 8 August 1980.

From “The West Australian”

Gordon O’Byrne was the first annonncer on 96fm, as an aside, never knew Perth had an announcer called Jim Beam (on 6IX). I’ll drink to that.

Are you still able to re-use some of these sweeps? Maybe not the “Now in Stereo” bit, but the ballsy NowFM audio? That’s remarkable audio quality for a regional station. Very slick production & VO.

Agree, i miss thar style of promo. The early 90s was the best era for FM sweepers/promos.

As i said above, I actually put them togeter in 1997 (I was the night Jock and image producer at the time) The voice was WIN TV’S Tim Burdock and they were made by cueing cds and drop editing on a 4 track reel to reel analog tape. Alot of work at the time but I’ve always loved a big promo spot :ok_hand:

PS, I did transfer the audio from tape to digital for the stations 21st and do dust off and play on the stations birthday (for no other reason than we can) :ok_hand:
