Radio History

Logopedia doesn’t even give the running radio jays a jersey.

I’m also thinking the figure in the top left of this poster is a dig at Dr Dan… just speculating.

When did Triple J update the logo this year?

I don’t think 100.7 was ever used, I suspect it was allocated on the assumption that WIN-4 would stay off air, but i think it was switched back on for a while when there were complaints about WIN-59 UHF reception.

I think sometimes we forget just how ‘experimental’ radio has been for much of its history.

In addition to the versions in the article, there was also a 1981 version which I remember. I think it aired in Melbourne on 3KZ in early 1981 and in the 90’s on KZFM/Gold 104.

There was also another documentary called The Evolution of Rock which I heard on 3DB (now KIIS101.1) in Melbourne in 1978 and covered every year in a 2-3 hour block right up to 1977-78. That documentary may have also aired on 3KZ in early 1981 but I’m not sure if it was that station or if it wasThe History of Rock’n’Roll at a different timeslot.

Some of the tapes from The Evolution of Rock are said to be lost. It would be great if they could be found again.

For fans of Kenny Everett, some Radio 1 and Capital jingles, airchecks and Kremmen that dropped on Soundcloud on Christmas day. Little one-stop Kenny shop.

Happy New 3AK for those that celebrate

What year did that happen?

The changeover was at 7.00am on 1/1/1986. The last track played on the old Beautiful Music was apparently some instrumental piece typical of Beautiful Music. The first song played after 7am was (IIRC) Freeway Of Love by Aretha Franklin.

And the ratings tumble began.

Just scrabbling finding some summer reading and I grab an old Haruki Murakami novel and out falls this thing… which I must have been using as a book mark.

What sort of vintage?

pre-1978 at least, since that 1210 frequency was their pre 9 khz spacing one.

Thank you so much for posting this. I was hoping someone would have a clearer version.

That logo is terrible!

You’re welcome.
I did clean the logo up a bit before posting too.
But it could be sharpened up.

For January 26 various LGAs make nominations for the environmental citizen of the year award. But here’s an interesting campaign from radio history where it seems Triple M Sydney had their own environmental citizens award. What is notable about this promotion is it is completely devoid of any sponsorship, whether commercial or governmental. And the monthly prize is merely a certificate.

I am uncertain as to the vintage, though the Triple M logo and seven digit phone numbers at the base of the label do provide some clues.

Perhaps early 90s as that’s when things like Clean Up Australia became a big thing? They needed to get on that ‘yucky poo’ train!

Early 90s? Yes, ‘bumper stickers’ were going out of vogue by that stage, so that would make sense - stickers for wheelie bins.

You have to laugh at what it says on the back though, it’s essentially an entry form for an Environmental award where you have to tell them what you’re doing to help reduce pollution, then the last 3 words at the bottom say “Please Don’t Litter” ROFL.

Could just imagine a young Clover Moore going around Kings Cross picking up discarded MMM stickers from the gutter.
