2HD use to have the goal post padding too.

Also seeing Paul Speziale’s name is a blast from the past. He was in the Muswellbrook Apex club with my Dad back then

with Oaks Day (Ladies Day) coming up this Thursday at Flemington, here’s how 3XY commemorated the day 50 years ago in 1974, by having its own “Ladies’ Day” with females taking over on-air duties from the blokes for the day: Sue McIntosh, Marcie Jones, Linda George, Denise Drysdale, Debbie Byrne and Pat McDonald.

Byrne and Drysdale are still with us (I know DD’s old on-air duo partner Sigers is long gone).

as far as I am aware, Sue McIntosh, Marcie Jones and Linda George are also still with us.

Pat McDonald, then starring in Number 96, died in 1990.

As an archive media buff with an ‘ear to the ground’ it’s dispiriting when people are not well-known enough today (even if they once were) for the media to report that they have left us (this happened with the guy who was the Russian in love with Alex Pates in Drop the Dead Donkey and also was in Casualty where despite his surviving co-stars confirming he had died, because it was not immediately reported it wasn’t accepted by some people).

Is there any chance of 927 paying tribute to the pre-1988 3UZ next year for the 100th anniversary. There must be decent Uz airchecks out there - restore the music etc.?

927 or RSN, or whatever it calls itself these days, did a decent-ish tribute for 3UZ’s 90th birthday in 2015. Not sure if they will do same for the 100th.

But if you don’t even know his name, how are others supposed to know him?

Frankster did have some old studio master tapes of 3UZ airchecks from May 1969 which I have managed to save.

I’m still interested to hear how he’s going after last hearing he was struggling to find suitable accommodation.

Hi everyone, Frankster here,

I just wanted to check in. I’m doing okay, but financially I’m a mess. There’s so much I want to do, and at the moment I can’t. My hopes are to bring the website back as I still have a lot of material to put up that I haven’t put online before, but finances are stopping me from doing this.

I’ve had it suggested more than once, which was to offer the audio as a subscription. The problem is I wouldn’t know how to even set up a website which could do that, and charging for access, well, I always wanted people to cruise in free of charge and enjoy it all, particularly now that times are tough for everyone.

I’ve had problems with my health the last month - a four week spell of diarrhea, ulcerative colitis playing up, blood pressure through the roof, and all of this able to be controlled by medications of which I haven’t even been able to buy. I haven’t been outside my unit in weeks because of the lack of finances, my power bill just arrived which is $116 which I can’t afford to pay as at time of writing I’m down to my last $65…it’s just been crap after crap and I’m also now down to one meal a day, which is contributing to my lack of motivation and overall state of mind.

I’m sorry to bring you bad news, but it’s just how things are. I can’t get a loan because I’m not currently working at the moment, I’m behind in my rent, and everything just keeps going to crap. I don’t want to have to set up another gofundme to get me through until the end of the year. I was thinking of a payday lender but that’s no good either.

The job I had in September which was working the local govt elections doing data entry was a good one for 10 days - but I mistakenly ticked no to claiming the taxfree threshold and $933 of my earnings went straight to the ATO. That $933 would’ve come in very handy now. My fault and I don’t blame anyone for my stupidness.

Anyway, I’m not well, and my finances are lousy, and my mental health is just about shot to sh*t.

I also took on two audio transfer jobs that would’ve yielded me $1400, but they were completed in August and September - it’s now November and I’m yet to see a cent. So there’s also that going on.

Anyway, I’m alive. But at 51 years old, this is not how I want to continue my life and if there’s no change and no finances to take me through, I’m f**ked to put it mildly. I’ve even thought about selling off my audio transfer gear and my entire radio archive just to survive.

Hope you folks are well. Bye for now.

In the early 80’s, some regional South Australian commercial stations including 5SE Mt Gambier would relay 5AD Adelaide after hours and overnight. Unlike these days, the relay was a complete relay including Adelaide advertising, mentions of 5AD and everything.

The reason I’m bringing this up now is that there is a discussion in another thread of a similar thing happening right now in some markets in regional NSW and SA, only it’s TV rather than radio and it’s not just after hours, but all the time, on one of the three commercial stations in some smaller regional markets where all three commercial stations are owned by the same owner. In those markets, one of the channels is either completely or mostly a relay of the state capital’s channel.

Link to other discussion.

On 12/11/89 ,4IP returned to their original call sign after nearly 10 years of being Radio 10 ,then Stereo 10 ,then Lite and Easy 1008.
However this was not a success for them as AM radio wasn’t popular anymore, with woeful ratings of 3 percent during this time.
They had a pop/classic hits format from November 1989 to December 1991,the music wasn’t too bad,but no one was listening anymore .
By late 1991 the station had been purchased by the TAB ,then they became a racing station,4TAB.

And still has the best coverage of all of Brisbane’s AM stations being on St Hubert’s Island. Crystal clear in Tweed Heads and Sunshine Beach. Gotta love water paths and AM radio.

Should be a solution for Perth AM radio woes!

Stick the masts on Rottnest Island!

Not a bad idea actually - I was up north around Geraldton last weekend and 1152 Newsradio from Busselton came in clear all the way up the coast. By comparison even 720 ABC Perth starts to get static barely 80km north of Perth.

There are a few problems with that including that Rottnest is further off the coast than St Helena Island that is nestled inside the bay so it is directly in line with the north and south coasts in SEQ. The biggest N/S signal from Rottnest would miss the coast.

(PS - realise it was not a serious suggestion but interesting to speculate).

Yeah even if it fixed issues north of Wanneroo and around Rockingham where 6IX has repeaters, the problem would move to the Perth Hills and Swan Valley.
