What happened to those DJs? Broken Hill or Alice Springs these days?

Old 2KO Newcastle TV Commercial from the early 80’s I’d say, they used that logo from about '79 I think, or maybe after the 9kHz frequency spacing change in '78 through to mid to late '80’s, when they changed format to Hits & Memories after moving studios to Charlestown.

2KO was my No.1 station through this period as a kid, absolute powerhouse station back then, I switched to 2NX sometime in '81 or '82 & pretty much stayed listening to 2NX until it became X13 in the early '90’s, then I went back to 2KO.

Ah the memories, some of the jocks in that ad were/are the reason I fell in love with radio & why I got to where I am today working in it.

2 years ago today (I can’t believe it’s that long already)it was Goodbye 4KQ,and hello to SENQ👎
on the 693 AM frequency .
4BH changing to a Classic Hits format came just at the right time

Was quite a shame to lose a great station, knew some people who listened to it regularly. 4BH has now certainly filled the shoes of 4KQ and everyone I know who listened to 4KQ now listens to 4BH.

Hopelly Craig Hutchison is losing money with SENQ. Sports Radio did not work with MSR (Macquarie Sports Radio) We all know it would of been much better if ARN sold 4kq to ACE instead. Ace would of Kept 4kq as is classic hits and all. 4bh would of also kept as a Easy Music as well

Maybe Craig hopelly sells 4kq/senq to ACE when he reliises he is losing money with it

The Question is is if Sports Radio did not work on 4BH, why would it work on 4kq either?

The only reason ARN sold 4kq to SEN instead of ACE is that SEN offered more money to ARN compared to ACE I think.

And because SEN would not take listeners off KIIS. A music station might have though.

Though sadly SEN has been on air in Melbourne and also Sydney for a little while now, i suspect betting related ad revenue is making them money even though ratings are low

Isn’t being offered more money than other offers the primary reason anyone chooses to sell anything to anyone?

neutering opposition is very much in the calculus - ARN owning and leasing the old 3BA frequency to RSN 927 is an example.

ARN don’t own the 3BT licence - mind you, it is still owned by allies of the Cameron clan.

Thanks for sharing that, very interesting! I do love anything Ms Patterson writes there.

I was curious though about this bit of info:

“It speaks volumes that within twelve months, Triple M Sydney was number #1 in three demographics, 10-17, 18-24 and 25-39.”

Not being familiar with Sydney’s radio ratings at the time, I was surprised to think MMM had such an immediate impact on its launch in Sydney? Certainly seemed to be faster IIRC to the Melbourne experience where 3XY I guess had a tighter grip on the younger age groups until the mid-1980s, when the scales started tipping in favour of FM.

Great article.

But I still have 2 questions:

  1. Where did the inspiration/idea of the winged character come from?

  2. Where did the name “Doctor Dan” come from? Who is Dan? Why is he a Doctor?

I think SCA should re-instate the Dr. Dan figure into their current logo. I know there is a version of this floating around - but it’s not in all Triple M’s current marketing… and I think it should be.

Radio 2NM Muswellbrook Sign off. Labled late 1980s.

Interesting to think radio stations were still signing off that late. Though was anything taken during those overnight hours or just dead air?

I always thought they just relayed 2NX all night, which began at 6pm, until breakfast. The 2NX callsign became 2NXNM at 6pm but still ran the 1341 2NX jingles.

I think Triple M should just go back to the old logo. I have never liked their current one at all. I think the old one actually looks more contemporary even now lol

In survey 1 of 1984 Triple M was a clear No.1 with 18-24s but 2SM was in control of the 10-17s and 2WS owned the 25-39 year olds.

Note that this was also the first survey for the ill fated Magic 11.
