Was Rocksat rebranded to Planet Rock?
Those shows were brilliant. Such a shame they were swallowed up by the bigger radio networks.
These days we only have the iHeart Radio Countdown and Ray Hadley’s Country Music Countdown. Bland.

No, Planet Rock was a completely separate program, with a different format.
It was purely announcer based with music, no callers or live interviews like Rocksat was.
Would have to be! I’ve never heard it anywhere else.
Good thing I’ve never heard eg 104.3 as “104 and three tenths”… that would be too much!
Americans are funny with fractions I think.
They also do (or did?) this…

Maybe their aversion to decimals is like their aversion to the metric system?
They just like being different for the sake of being different. I used to work for a very large US based company now I work for an Australian based devision of a Asian based company and it is refreshing when doing online training that they use the correct spelling of words such as colour and initialise etc and they don’t use the words “reach out” when contacting someone nearly as much or other Americanisms.
Are you sure they don’t? We might need to take a raincheck on that one.
They do use it but not in almost every sentence. I hate the phrase it drives me nuts.
Thank goodness American stations are only at 0.2 mhz intervals.
I couldn’t imagine 94.25 as “94 and a quarter” (being a US denomination as well).
An item from a WIN News Illawarra update dated 9th July 1995, reporting that Wave FM had been bought by a US company called Benchmark Communications. It had been on the market since January that year after ACE Radio decided to sell the station to concentrate more on their Victorian regional stations.
In November the same year, the station was then sold again to Grant Broadcasters, who had already owned 94.9 Power FM & 2ST in the neighbouring Nowra market. Back then, Power FM was considered to be a de-facto 3rd commercial station for Wollongong, providing listeners an alternative to Wave FM & i98.

Commercial radio in Australia turns 100 this year and kicked off celebrations today with the launch of a new report that shows the industry contributes $1 billion to the nation’s annual GDP, including a $320 million boost to regional Australia.

The first public radio station in Australia opened in Sydney on 23 November 1923 under the call sign 2SB with other stations in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart following
I am surprised, but at the same time, not entirely, that apart from this announcement that radio has all but ignored its upcoming 100th anniversary. Maybe it doesn’t want to make a big show of its age ![]()
In 1973 there was a big fuss by the industry for radio’s 50th anniversary, AFAIK there was a broad campaign across ABC and commercial stations including special jingles and so on… and a commemorative postage stamp!
Found this old ‘World Radio TV Handbook’ 1996 edition in my cupboard yesterday.
Here is the cover and the 7 pages relating to Australia (found it difficult to scan/photo so not all of it is totally clear).
There’s a lot of detail but not particularly easy to read.
Was 3BA Ballarat on 92.9 before it was on 102.3
Well spotted… I don’t remember that one.
