Radio History

“The Heat” was also used in network IDs. Evening programs were called “The Nightheat”.

96.1 at Gympie was simply known as “The Heat” , but other stations always had their own station brands, such as ZZZ.

Thanks guys. I have some 90s era scoped audio from the NSW North Coast and there are some IDs which just say “The Heat” (and “Nightheat” too, if I recall correctly). I’d assumed they were 100.9 ZZZ but wanted to be sure.

Any chance of an upload? I do remember The Heat branding and tuning into 96.1 The Heat at Noosa in 1998.

It would have been funny listening to The Heat 100.3 (Armidale) during a snowstorm at Guyra.

They will be part of our proposed Sydney to Brisbane Roadie montage, which I made mention of recently. They are not my recordings and they are in need of some serious tidying up beforehand. Hope to start work on this soon.

I’m sure 92.9 Tamworth IDed as “The Heat” for a little while too

It could also relate to listening by a nice cosy fireplace with a hot cuppa, or even just the music.

Just for fun, a few 90s era stickers from stations mentioned in the discussion about The Heat.

I had no idea that the bottom two stations also adopted The Heat branding at some point.

How unoriginal to have FM100.3 and FM92.9. It’s much nicer when there’s an actual name like, “The Heat”.

A lot of the s 39 FM licences were just ‘FM [frequency]’ to start off with. Orange was FM 105.9, Young FM 93.9, Wagga FM 93, etc. I would rather more effort go into the sound of the station than the name, but it can’t hurt to have a memorable moniker.

FM 92.9 Tamworth did flirt with ‘One FM’ not long ago…but that didn’t last long. I don’t think the Armidale FM station has ever had a branded name.

Would love to hear some audio from these stations before they were Star Fm’ed ! From my distant memory being young at the time, the main networked programming was generally Martin Molloy on drive into Nightzone during the evening. Saturday and Sunday afternoon’s were sandbagged with the national countdowns ie Take40, Hot Hits and Australian Top 40. I believe some of sweepers used on 99.5 Mildura and 3BOFM may have been done by the guy that use to do voiceovers on channel 9 and B rock but not 100% sure.

Their current RDS is 92.9 TAM FM.

I think it’s just 92.9 TAM without the FM, as there’s an 8 character limit.

I am pretty sure the RDS display was 92.9 TAM Fm but I could be wrong.

This is my last cap of it in February.

They used ‘92.9 TMW’ on RDS for a while as well. Do they ID as Tam FM on air, though? Wouldn’t be the worst name to use…you could give away Tim Tams at regular intervals.

No they just identify themselves as 92.9.
92.9 Tam fm would be a better name, much better then One fm. If a restack of the fm band was to happen in NW NSW changing frequencies would not be such a big deal, if they had another name other then their frequency.

TRAX FM maybe?

As in music tracks and acknowledgment of the countryside?

Already used by a community station in Port Pirie. In the early 2000s, there was also an LPON called ‘Trax FM’ in Launceston which played all Australian music. @Chris_Woolley @ando9185 is my memory of this faulty?

I’ll double check tomorrow what the RDS says - they still ID as 92.9 on-air. Interestingly the local community station launched RDS, and all of a sudden 92.9 had it (and they have similar RDS text too)

I seem to recall something like this running from the one of the TAFE campuses. Not sure on the name however…sorry.
