The only one of those that make it into Newcastle are the Bulga ones, and then only in elevated suburbs and only weakly.

But if they are reused on the Central Coast etc it could cause issues for the mining TXs.

Speaking of 3XY, hereā€™s a pic of Kevin Hillier.

Kevin Hillier (1983)

Kevin later went to Triple M Melbourne and became the host of the D-Generation Breakfast Show from 1990 to 1992.

I remember holidaying on the Central Coast as a kid. Those orange and yellow 2GO bumper stickers with the wave and seagull were on every second car. You showed you were a proud central coaster by slapping that sticker on the back window.

Itā€™s not quite the same as someone in Terrigal putting a Triple M sticker on their car. That might actually feel quite defeatist - itā€™s like Sydney has taken over.

These ones probably werenā€™t as iconic

He was also the top rated breakfast announcer at 4IP.

The lack of available FM space will also explain the 756kHz Triple M translator at Margaret River that was commissioned in 1995

Sorry, I know this was discussed about a year ago but Iā€™ve only just joined this group so thought Iā€™d add what I remember.

1993 was Larry Emdur & John Bell for breakfast on 2UW- not sure what happened to John Bell- not heard of him for years, maybe others have some ideas on this.

Anyway, if Iā€™m correct, Mike Carlton took over circa 94-95 before the Larry, Jean & Rob breakfast show in 1996 (Larry Emdur, Jean Kittson and Rob Duckworth) and by this time, 2UW had been Mix 106.5 for about 12-18 months.

And from the same newspaper (The Sun, Sydney, November 24, 1983) as in the classic TV listings thread, this gem of a 2SM Power Chart.

Great year, and chart!

This is interesting on fake interviews done on radio back in the olden days. Did this happen a lot in Australia?

Very interesting. Iā€™ve never heard of this but I wouldnā€™t be surprised if it was a thing here.

Comedian Tony Martin said in his book ā€˜A Nest of Occasionalsā€™ that kind of thing was common in New Zealand back in the day. The jocks at 898FM in Hamilton used to add a comedic side to the interviews.

I swear some of the interviews we see these days on TV are like the modern day equivalent. You get the feeling the answers were pre-recorded and just played out when the scripted questions are being asked.

Sure was. Record companies would sent the LPs to radio stations for fake interviews all the time.

Iā€™d say it still does, donā€™t listen to much music radio these days but Iā€™m sure Gold 104.3 have used these fairly recently, not the entire interview, but just inept two answers between songs.

Raises another question, do any commercial music stations here so interviews anymore?

Yes. 4KQ have lots of interviews of artists (obviously classic hits) and sometimes past TV stars during breakfast. Generally quite long and in depth.

probably lots of reality TV contestants :face_vomiting:

Though while dial surfing the other day I did hear Kyle & Jackie O interviewing a music artist whose name I canā€™t recall now. So they are still happening.

Bit late of a reply, Lake Mac FM are lucky they can even get to air, let alone moving frequencies, not a well managed station & with both the studio & transmitter actually located outside the licence area, when ACMA told them they have to move into licence area, they said itā€™ll cost more than we have & weā€™ll have to shut down, so ACMA let them stay where they are, so Iā€™m led to believe.

Coast FM on the other hand, have asked ACMA for a move of frequency to 91.7 but itā€™s taking forever to get a yes or no reply out of them, asked for a power increase too, but they quickly said no way, donā€™t even bother asking that.
