Radio History

A bit of Sunshine Coast radio history with a mention of the Gold Coast at the very end.

I hadn’t seen your post before answering someone in another thread. But this is my take on what happened with KZFM:

AFAIK the first survey for KZFM had them rocket to #1.

But they couldn’t leave well alone and began fiddling with the music to make it sound more “FM”. Trying to sound cool when the format was a bit daggy (but worked!). Jocks began to sound more ocker. The currents were harder edged, and they began to drop all the sixties oldies.

No doubt the crippling repayments on the FM conversion fee were biting and they got greedy for more listeners. Instead they drove them away.

Big mistake. Big. Huge.

A random question popped into my head this morning in the shower (I am usually immune to such lightbulb moments)!

Was there ever a move to launch a supplementary FM licence for 2MW (Radio 97) in the Tweed Valley? I’m guessing it may not have been worth it for Bill because most would tune into ZZZ or the Cold Ghost stations for their CHR/Hot AC fix. I’m assuming Bill was the owner back in 1997 and 1998, when most supplementary FMs were switched on.

Even 7XS had a supplementary FM (in 7AUS) even though it wasn’t really used until recently (and then only for Kix Country…)

It’s a good question.

I’ve wondered why they haven’t fully converted to FM given they are a solus market.

TRV is back in business after a short break. I’m currently assembling a presentation of Melbourne’s Fox FM from 1997. Just curious - they were IDing as “101.9 The Fox” at this point in time. Was there a modified logo which said “The Fox” or did they just use the standard 90s era “101.9 Fox FM” logo?

They just used the standard 90s era “101.9 Fox FM” logo, which included “TODAY” on the top of the logo along with the other Austereo stations (except 2Day).

Aaah, so that was the one with the black background and a blue sphere behind the text?

Yes.

Thanks for that, @TV-Expert. I was going to use an earlier logo but thought I’d check here just in case. And sure enough, I’d forgotten about that logo! I’m not 100% sure if we have the version with “Today’s” at the top. Time to go digging in the archives…

Thanks @FineTuned! As it turned out, I didn’t have a copy so these are greatly appreciated.

Speaking of which, does anybody have any 1980s era 2SM logos they can share, please? Particularly those mentioning AM Stereo or Rock Of The 80s? Hi-res original scans are preferable, as opposed to low-res web downloads. I’m currently looking at assembling a 2SM jingle montage and for whatever reason, TRV has a bunch of 70s logos but almost nothing from the 80s.

Wow, there’s a nostalgia overload. And I reckon if a radio station today dug out the exact playlist Fox FM had in 1997 they’d probably rake in a few listeners too.

I think 2DayFM Sydney would come quite close to that in the present time (late 2021).

Back in early 1997, there was a bit of a rivalry between Fox FM & TTFM for the #1 FM spot. In S3/1997, Fox slid 0.9% to 10.5%, whilst TT rose 1.8% to 10.2%. In the following survey, TT knocked Fox off the #1 FM spot.

TTFM was a terrific radio station for the time, from what I remember it lacked the hard edge of Triple M and was happy to go just a touch older than Fox FM, but not as daggy as Gold 104. It’s such a pity they ruined it when they became Mix 101.1.

Of course it’s interesting to note that the announcer during that 28/4/1997 Fox FM aircheck would defect to TTFM a couple of years later!

Although sadly Andy Grace’s time on 101.1 would be relatively short lived, as ARN let him (and a fair few others across various stations) go during the company’s May 2001 cutbacks. But of course, he’d later return to ARN during the Late 2000s and was breakfast anchor for Mix 106.5 for a while before doing a couple of years on WSFM/Gold nights.

It was a very “workplace friendly” station, as the other stations could be divisive with more focused formats, but TT was a little bit ‘one size fits all’ by being not too old and not too young. Some people might think that equals bland, but it seemed to work. I wonder if its ratings during the workday reflected that?

Whenever I see TT I think of this:

Another bit of late 90s nostalgia!

The following year, a new version aired where the strobe effect was reduced because it was causing seizures.
