Radio History

Very wide ranging playlist there.

Pure amateur! Mine is 632 hours long

Here is the going rate for an commercial FM licence in Sydney over the last 42 years:

2DayFM issued 104.1 in 1979. Cost $0
2MMM issued 104.9 in 1979. Cost $0
2WS issued 101.7 in 1991. Cost $8M
2UW issued 106.5 in 1991. Cost $9M
DMG issued 96.9 in 2000. Cost $155M
DMG issued 95.3 in 2004. Cost $106M

Incredibly Lachlan Murdoch eventually buys the entire DMG Nova network for $220M - less than the cost for the two Sydney licences. It was a “buy two and get ten free” deal.

Bargain!

2KA’s FM licence cost $46,000 from memory.

An absolute bargain when you consider that the 96.1FM signal can be heard in a decent chunk of the Sydney metro area & beyond.

Which is why 2Day FM and Triple M took them to court……and lost.

And WIN Television paid $10 million for the C91.3 licence. The coverage around Sydney is fairly good.

This just popped up on @anon36025973.

It’s the opening broadcast of Hobart’s first commercial FM station, TTT (now Hit 100.9), from 4th July 1990. 7HO converted to FM as HOFM just 4 months later.

They used just about every cliche possible in that opening!

Another one from @anon36025973: an aircheck of 2CH Sydney from the early hours of 21st March 2002.

Ahh yes, I seem to remember 2CH using those “Easy 1170” jingles for several years during the 2000s. Think they would’ve been dropped around 2009-ish when 2CH dropped the “Easy” positioner?

And of course as it’s been covered before, “Latest News” by Bernd Roger enjoyed (at least) a 16 year or so run as the 2CH news theme.

The opening broadcast of Melbourne’s Nova 100 will be available at The Radio Vault from 10pm AEST tonight. And as a special treat, it will be appearing in unscoped (unedited) form.

Enjoy!
