Radio History

I think I’ve figured out what year 2UE’s Late 1990s/Early 2000s logo was first used in!

A bunch of old Cross Promotion and Product Placement Carols In The Domain telecasts were recently uploaded to YouTube by Chris Tracey. During the 1995 telecast, the pointer to a radio simulcast still had the 1988 logo for 2UE as well as a “Channel Seven Sydney” logo which I’m pretty sure is part of the “Discover” branding they used in 1995 and the first half of 1996:

Meanwhile in 1996 & 1997…

For the record 2UE continued to simulcast Carols In The Domain in 1998 and 1999 going by the credits for those years, with Mix 106.5 taking over in 2000:

If there was any lingering doubt that Mix 106.5 changed from their original (or Baltimore station inspired ) purple/teal/pink logo to the “Mix Network” blue/yellow/red style in 2001, there won’t be now.

Hopefully at some point in the future, I’ll get the opportunity to talk about some of Mix 106.5 TV commercials from the “purple/teal/pink” logo era like I did recently with the Early 2000s Mix Network ads.

But in the meantime, I’m pretty sure Mix 106.5 continued to simulcast Carols In The Domain from Channel Seven for at least a decade - probably right until 2013 (the final Christmas of Mix, before the KIIS relaunch on 20/1/2014) but it’s possible that Smooth 95.3 took over earlier. Either way, I definitely remember Mix 106.5 simulcasting the audio of Channel Seven commercials while Smooth have opted out to do their own thing during the TV telecast breaks in recent years. Too young to remember how 2UE handled CITD telecasts, although I’m sure someone out there remembers!

An excellent bit of radio history there. Thanks for sharing!

Agreed completely, fantastic post @crankymedia and thank you for sharing.

And agree 4GY seems in a poor state of operation, pretty much unheard in Brisbane, so much so at night it’s easier to hear ABC from Western Australia than 4GY from 150km up the road.

4GY is almost never heard here; even 4AM Mareeba is an easier catch. Perhaps they’re letting it limp along until a possible FM conversion? That may not be possible unless the band in SEQ is nuked.

Yes I agree 4GY transmission is now abysmal. To think that during the 80s 4GY was almost a local station strength in Maryborough at least during the daytime. I remember being able to stay on 4GY from north of Maryborough down to Nambour.

Great memories of 4SS Cranky. Yes reception was awesome along the northern coast including Rainbow Beach and Hervey Bay. Also Radio 10 was excellent in Rainbow Beach. 4SS also wasn’t bad into Brisbane. I had it as one of my presets in the car in the mid 80s on my AM only car radio. Radio 10, 4BK, 4SS, 4GY and 4MB. I also had 4AK set for when I went up to Toowoomba.

I recall in the mid 80s that 4SS was kind of midway between Radio 10 and 4BK musically.

I have a couple of stickers of the old 4NA before it was 4SS. I think 4NA was on 940khz

I remember driving past the studios in the main street of Nambour before the Bruce Highway bypassed the town.

Speaking of 4GY, again in the mid 80s. I remember they had a billboard on the old Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Yandina which had a large dial displayed showing where 4GY was (right down the end at ‘56’ AM) relative to a couple of other stations. I guess it was to help people locate it that far down the dial. Most SEQ residents maybe thought 612 ABC was the lowest any station was on the dial.

I think they were ID’d as “Radio 56” (rather than 4GY) for a while too?

Is that right, though not sure when, but sometime in the 80s I think?

Yes definitely. They ID’d as ‘Radio 56 4GY’ but also just ‘Radio 56’ at times. Also briefly as Stereo 56 when they went AM stereo. Sometimes it was MusicRadio 56 too.

940 would have been in the 70s. I think it would have probably been around the time that 4WK moved to 960. 4NA was on 830 before the chnage to 9kHz spacing.

Nice!! Love it.

Of course a couple of famous US stations used the ‘MusicRadio’ moniker over the years, MusicRadio 77 WABC in New York and MusicRadio 89 WLS in Chicago.

Reminiscent of the Wesgo style logos eg. for 2WS from that era. Did they own 4GY then too?

Yes they did.

Yes, 4GY was owned by Wesgo until 1989, when it was sold to Caralis. Throughout much of the 80s, Wesgo also owned 2GO, 2KO, 2MC, 4KQ, 4CC & 5KA.

this was a later version from 4GY, circa 1993

Canberra also used to have Music Radio 2CC (in about 1975).

In 1983 4GY also used the ID 558 4GY Radio Sunshine.
