Radio History

Though back then, most families could only afford one set.

And particularly in regional areas, there was only one choice.

@clickso- I think those airchecks are from 2003 not 2004. 16 May 2004 was totally dry in Goulburn, whereas 16 May 2003 had 11 mm:

Ok thanks, it was a long time ago.

And the mention of a terrorist attack in Morocco confirms it as May 2003, as well as some of the songs. Ingrid’s ‘You Promised Me’ was everywhere around that time; heard on Snow FM several times a day during my school trip to Jindabyne in April 2003.

Onto another topic entirely- what vintage radio positioners and slogans do you remember? B-Rock used We’re your rock and roll authority west of the mountains for a time in the late 90s. Always liked that one. It remains true that they are the only rock station west of the Great Dividing Range in NSW.

Yep was gonna say the dead give away is the 2003 songs (yes ingrid the most obvious) but nothing from 04.

Made a slight error in my post above; the B-Rock slogan was ‘We’re the rock and roll flagship west of the mountains’. I think I prefer my own slant on it.

I was confusing it with a KCDX sting which did say ‘rock and roll authority’.

Just wondering in 2ch history have they ever broadcasted live sports? I am not sure if they did the Melbourne cup.

Apart from Sports during the news bulletins, I don’t think so.

So they would be the only current commercial station to not broadcast sport. Perhaps 2uw or 2ws never did too although I suspect 2uw may have done horse racing back in the early days. Not sure if Radio National has. 2ea and radio has does soccer.

Even back in the old days, stations used to mix in sport and music… eg. 2SM when Frank Hyde used to call rugby league games (“It’s long enough, it’s high enough and it’s straight between the posts!”).

Between 1982 & 2001, 2 Double O & later i98FM in Wollongong used to call the Illawarra Steelers (later St George Illawarra Dragons from 1999 to 2001) matches.

Here’s one from 1993 for the Steelers vs Gold Coast Seagulls.

2KA & later One FM (now The Edge 96.1) used to broadcast the Penrith Panthers matches until the end of the 1993 season.

2uw did ball by ball coverage of the cricket.

2UW’s coverage in sport has been famed since the station inaugurated “ball-by-ball” descriptions of the Cricket Tests in England in 1930. Leadership has been held in each succeeding year, and today, the sporting coverage provided by 2UW embraces a split-second descriptive service of every worth-while sporting event in Sydney, with an up-to-the-minute coverage also of important interstate sporting fixtures.

Is 2UW KIIS now?

Yes, was MIX 106.5 in between.

So they still do sports broadcasts?

No, KIIS doesn’t do any sports outside of hourly news bulletins. I doubt they have ever done sports since moving to FM, but. i can’t confirm that.

4IP was also notable for Rugby League coverage with Billy J Smith their first caller. At that time IIRC, the local Brisbane rugby league call was on three commercial stations - 4IP, 4BH and 4BK as well as ABC. As 4IP was in a loose network situation with 2SM, Frank Hyde’s call of international games would often be heard. The 4IP call was networked across Queensland as was 2SM’s in NSW.

I can confirm that KIIS has never done a sports simucast since changing from SYDNEYS MIX 106.5.
