I have seen on the buses the drivers are manually pressing a button on their Myki console to count passengers, something the process of touching on does automatically.

Victorian government press release

Wouldn’t be a state election campaign without this one being dusted off again! Seems like a fair bit of money for not much. I thought they would have done some of this work when they originally announced this in 2018.

These days it’s like the cost of planning in preparation is basically what a whole upgrade would cost 15-20 years ago… Nuts.

I think by the time the melton line starts construction, the Wyndham vale electrification will overtake it in priority. Those suburbs are booming and the v/line stations are packed. What’s it going to be like in 10 years? The project would still capture deer park and Ardeer on the melton line, which are basically middle band suburbs these days.

But tap-ons give you more than just patronage - like understanding how people move around the city which can be more valuable when designing integrated timetables.

Transport for NSW use load cells in Trains to estimate patronage (and carriage spread) on top of Opal data

More news out this hour…
Yes, I love it when they threaten to shut the whole of the SEQ train network down

I certainly think they could at least add into the mix looping the Werribee metro line around to Wyndham Vale, per the original Western rail plan. Would spread the load better between Metro and Vline, but also bring back a much better link between Geelong and Werribee.

Rail strike in SEQ today

Everything we know: Queensland Rail to slash 300 daily services as union maintenance bans cripple SEQ network

Commuters across SEQ are bracing for massive disruptions from tomorrow as Queensland Rail moves to a reduced timetable, cutting about 300 services a day.

Tuesday, May 5: The reduced “Saturday-style” timetable officially begins across the SEQ network, cutting 300 weekday services.

HCMTs and XT2s have passenger counters above the doors. You see carriage occupancy data above the platform doors at the metro tunnel stations.

Trams have the same. You can see it live on tramtracker.

The other main way they do it is people with a clipboard at stations counting.

More commuters will be forced onto buses then

UPDATE: federal infrastructure minister Catherine King posted on her Facebook page this morning

The new Hope Island station on the Gold Coast railway line will open to passengers next Monday, May 18. It is one of three new stations constructed as part of the Cross River Rail project (Pimpama station opened last October).

buses are more crowded because of the continuing industrial action by Qld Rail.Even outside of peak hours .If it gets much worse I’ll go back to driving ,especially during the working week.

there’s even notices up on electronic info boards at major bus stations, from TransLink ,‘Buses will be more crowded due to reduced train services, allow for extra travel time’

I’ve heard whispers they’ve stopped using three cars and an agreement might be on the table by Wednesday - but could be wrong.

London’s Heathrow Express to be axed?

London’s Heathrow Express may soon be completely replaced by more affordable and better connected Elizabeth Line services, according to reports in the UK media.

Transport for London (TfL) says it intends to double the frequency of Elizabeth Line services when ten more trains are delivered in the next two years.

Meanwhile, patronage on the Heathrow Express “is steadily falling and we need to reconsider whether this service is the best use of these valuable train paths into Paddington,” TfL noted in a recent submission to the UK government.

“The current service contract ends in 2028 and alternative options should be considered that can increase ridership at a lower cost to customers to the airport.”

“With limited capacity on the Great Western Main Line (GWML) and competing demands from a number of train services, the focus must be on using it in a way that benefits the most passengers and improves reliability.”

The Sydney to Canberra rail line will receive a $100 million upgrade, with the federal government contributing $50 million in last night’s budget.
