Public Transport

Following the commencement of full service on Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel, it’s mission accomplished for the Metro Tunnel HQ on Swanston Street near the corner of Little Collins Street.

So far, Transport for NSW has confirmed the light rail extension to Broadmeadow. However, there was a petition last November calling on the government to expand the network even further.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

If they ever expand it to MJS, they need to build an interchange there for game days where they drop off and pickup in front of the stadium.

Transport Victoria have revealed public transport arrangements for the Australian F1 Grand Prix at Albert Park next week. The major addition this year is of course the Metro Tunnel. Extra trains will be running frequently on Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines on Saturday and Sunday, stopping at Anzac station. Trains between State Library, Town Hall and Anzac stations are also free with your Grand Prix ticket, on the day of travel.

This major opportunity has attracted strong international interest, and three world leading bidders have been shortlisted to submit a Request for Proposal.

  • Go Places Melbourne (a consortium of Go-Ahead Australia, Acciona Rail and Tokyo Metro)
  • RATP Dev JH Downer (comprising RATP Dev, John Holland and Downer); and
  • Melbourne Grow (a consortium of MTR Corporation Australia, CRRC and DT Infrastructure)

Each shortlisted bidder will provide a detailed proposal outlining how they would operate and maintain Melbourne’s metropolitan rail franchise.

MTR Corporation Australia and John Holland are current part owners of Metro Trains Melbourne.

Pending on the results of the franchise tender, the Metro Trains name could disappear as early as next year.

If Wikipedia is to be believed (emphasis on IF) the state government owns the name Metro so it might not change even with a new operator.

I’m inclined to think yes. When the tram franchise was recently re-tendered, the Yarra Trams brand name was retained as well.

I believe they’d acquired any branding they didnt already own to allow for a consistent nomenclature moving forward

Metro Trains branding is owned by the government like Yarra Trams is

Transport Victoria has revealed general public transport arrangements for the upcoming AFL season.

Following the opening of Metro Tunnel, it looks like special trains will not operate from Richmond to Cranbourne or Pakenham for MCG matches, nor will they depart Southern Cross station for Sunbury, for matches at Marvel Stadium. Instead, TV has told fans travelling on these lines to transfer at either Malvern, Flinders Street or Footscray.

Such a great move

I’m confused why people are upset by this. So many commuters have to change to another line anyway. The whole point is to remove congestion. It’s really not that much of a walk from town hall anyway.

I get it. The MCG is bound by two stations within <10min walk that have historically serviced just about all metro rail lines, but it will not any longer.

Town Hall is a 1.7km walk (or more depending on the gate you’re at) which is really getting up there for a walkable distance (especially with kids, prams etc - last time we walked it with a pram the lifts on the footbridge were out too!) And changing trains after a footy game is easier said than done, given the crowds on the trains. I can see some very negative press about it come opening round and some of the bigger drawing games.

Officials say rail boom gates are designed to snap upwards when hit, after dramatic video emerged of a level-crossing gate lifting before a train smashed into a car in Melbourne’s inner-north.

The dashcam footage of the February 25 incident in Brunswick was posted to X on Monday afternoon. It shows the silver Mercedes slowly travelling toward the closed rail crossing.

Fair enough but you can change at flinders st. This is such a common practice in all public transport systems around the world. I don’t recall special trains running to lords.

No, but with Lords you’ve got a far lower ground capacity and a far more developed rail network.

I’m sure people will eventually figure it out, but I’m just saying there’s sure to be a few disgruntled people getting to/from the first few games of the season.

Watch the Hun do a piece after round one on it, rolling out the Spuckler family from Pakenham Upper, all decked out in their Magpies gear looking forlorn at Richmond station waiting for a train home that isn’t coming.
