Public Transport

one of the big things l love about Brisbane is that public transport is free for events at the gabba, suncorp and Carrara stadium (excl. airport line) - just need to show your ticket

I did catch the free tram to RLA this morning, tonight when I left the venue I must’ve gone the wrong way and I couldn’t remember where the tram stop was.I ended up walking back to my accommodation instead.

Where were you trying to go to afterwards?

Back to my accommodation in Flinders Street, just up the road from the train station.

The to/from city stuff can get confusing, it’s not always clear and the directions are often to a suburb you’ve never heard of. The first time I got it wrong it took me way too long to realise I could just get off at any stop and get on a different tram back in the other direction.

It’s an area that’s really bad - trams will have stickers showing the stop layout, but often not the one for the line you’re actually on, and very few models have any sort of active passenger information.

The stuff on the light rail systems in Canberra/Gold Coast are really well done, and Melbourne should learn from them.

Federal government offers more cash for Melb Airport Rail to take flight, placing pressure on SRL

Melbourne Airport Rail would be put back on a fast track under a federal government plan to pour more cash into the $10bn stalled project.

The bombshell move is set to put pressure on the Allan government’s priority project — its signature $34.5bn Suburban Rail Loop.

Under the plan, the Albanese government would put billions of dollars on the table to resurrect the airport rail — which has been effectively paused for four years by Victoria — providing the Allan government was on-board.

This could require prioritisation of works, including to the SRL.

The plan is understood to have been central to talks between federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King and Jacinta Allan when they met in Melbourne this week.

It is understood Ms Allan and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have also discussed infrastructure funding for Victoria this week.

Maybe this is the back door way to fund the SRL. The federal government goes 80:20 on airport rail, where there is a clear national interest. Then the state funds for airport rail get diverted to SRL.

Sometimes I wonder if the Lord Mayor of Brisbane back in 1969 made a big mistake in getting rid of the trams here and replacing them with buses.Of course Brisbane was much smaller back then, but would we have such bad traffic congestion today if the trams were kept running.?
Then again Melbourne is better suited to trams, the main streets are much wider

Yeah, it’s pretty funny that all those years ago Brisbane basically had a Metro system (well it was trams) got rid of it then played catch up and now they’re getting it back. (kind of)  :expressionless:

Same question could be asked of numerous cities in Australia and other countries. Most if not all, would almost certainly be better off now if they didn’t ditch them IMO

The Brisbane Metro official running this morning.

One half of Brisbane Metro gets rolling this morning – the M2 line runs from Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital to the University of Queensland – and will leave every five-minutes during peak time, service 12 stops, including two universities, three hospitals, the Cultural Centre, and CBD.

They’re probably missing a few points here.

It’s a “trial”. Whenever you’re developing a new system, you test it on or in a unremarkable area with the least possible ability to screw up the current system. That way, any bugs found can be fixed before expanding it.

So what if it’s in an area with only buses. Fine. I’m guessing the next step is o test it out on trains and buses. Rome wasn’t built in a day and all that jazz, yada yada yada,

The existing busway network should have been converted for light rail instead.Travelling on buses to and from the city ,especially in peak hours, buses are stuck in a ‘bus jam’ on parts of the busway,.they’re all lined up and hardly moving.

The Degraves Street subway below Melbourne’s Flinders Street station has reopened, following two years of Metro Tunnel construction works.
