Public Transport

It’s a pain that the train station closest to the Brisbane International tennis venue is closed while the ongoing Cross River Rail project is still underway.Lucky there’s a couple of bus routes that go close to the centre.I’ve already worked out my trip there for tomorrow,I’ll have to leave the car at home because there’s no where to park

Anyone been on public teansport and “forgotten” to get off at the right stop?

It happened to me on a Melbourne tram once, and nearly happened to me again tonight on a Sydney train!

I was too busy reading MS tonight to almost not notice it was my stop!

From my memory, Brisbane International was in hiatus when plans to rebuild Yeerongpilly station (the one closest to the venue) as part of Cross River Rail were being worked out. The planners obviously didn’t consider that the tournament would be revived this year.

Despite my frequent snoozing on the train ride home, in all my years I’ve only missed my station once. For some reason I would always manage to wake up just prior to arriving at my station, even when i lived only three stops from the CBD.

But the one time I did miss my station, I woke up just as I arrived at the next station. It was still walking distance for me to get home but I was now outside the zone for my ticket and just my luck there were ticket inspectors at the station as I got off the train. I gave them my reason for travelling outside my ticketed zone and they just let me through. This was back in the '90s.

I feel better now, thank you! I’ve never fallen asleep on the train, I’ve always liked watching the scenery roll by. I did come close a few times though going from Sydney back to Newcastle! A big night before was usually to blame.

That’s why the second bus I caught to travel to the venue was very crowded,if trains were running and stopping at Yeerongpilly station would have been so much easier for tennis watchers to get to the stadium.

Alternatively they could rebuild Tennyson station negating the need for any buses for the tennis.

It would be another white elephant like the old Exhibition station - a station rarely used outside of a major event i.e. the Brisbane International or Ekka.

The good folk of Tennyson and in particular King Arthur Terrace are the kind of households to have three Lexus SUVs in the driveway - they aren’t going to be using a rail service no matter how much they say they want Tennyson Station back. And another downside to servicing this wealthy suburb is that it takes away service frequency from more disadvantaged areas further south on the Beenleigh line/west on the Ipswich line.

Might be where limited services during the peak could be useful

More travellers and rising pressure on Brisbane’s domestic and international airports has prompted the Queensland government to prioritise public transport amid a beleaguered contract preventing buses accessing the terminals.

Federal Transport Minister Catherine King has written to Brisbane Airport Corporation, Brisbane City Council and the state government outlining her concerns about meeting demand in the lead up to the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

A monopoly on public transport options to and from the terminals exists with the Brisbane Airtrain, following a deal signed in 1998.

Queensland Rail will take over the contract in 2036 but it potentially leaves travellers with either rideshare and taxi options or driving as the only forms of travel outside the Airtrain, including between now and the Games.

The interior finishings of the Melbourne metro stations are not looking good. What’s with all the orange and yellow on exposed concrete? Looks like 90s playground equipment.

I understand how platform doors work on a proper metro, but does anyone know how they work with actual drivers? Do they get some kind of indication of when to stop so the doors line up? Do they need to slow down quite a bit to ensure they line up correctly?

I don’t mind the retro/industrial styling. Something different.

Most (all?) systems with ‘driven’ trains have car markers showing drivers where to pull up at each station. Think platform door screens would also normally have a small leeway - i.e the door screens are a little bit wider than the train doors. The doors also would be prevented from opening in the case of them not lining up. All this would be a bit moot in this case though because the drivers are highly unlikely to actually be driving in the new section through Melbourne (maybe in an emergency or a degraded mode) and it will be the signalling system controlling the train and where it pulls up to align the doors. Just like a ‘proper metro’.

Think very similar or same as this -

Currently the airport is served by just four bus routes, one that doesn’t run on weekends, with has only one bus operating after 7.45pm or more than once an hour.

Melbourne Airport chief of ground transport Jai McDermott said the airport remained committed to a building rail line, but also needed a significant improvement to local transport connections.

With about 18,000 people working at the airport, Mr McDermott said the airport needs more PTV buses that, “start early, finish late and run every 15 minutes”.

Mr McDermott said improved bus services could help connect more people in Melbourne’s north-west with job opportunities at the airport.

Thanks, the video was great. Answered any questions I had. I didn’t realise that that section of the line would be all automatic, I didn’t know that was a thing, makes much more sense now. I thought with drivers and platform doors, it would be too easy to overshoot the correct alignment. I guess in an ideal world, all signalling would eventually move over to this system.

Re: more bus services for Melbourne Airport

I found two blog posts from Melbourne on Transit, written in April 2023, on the same topic.

I would add I would like to see bus routes from Melbourne Airport to Watergardens railway station and Highpoint shopping centre.

A few Brisbane suburban train stations will be closed for about 6 months for upgrading works ,including Morningside,my closest one.it’s easier to catch 2 trains to and from the RSPCA ,even though it’s on a different line than catching a bus then a train.I’ll have to use public transport some of the time I travel there from now on as petrol is over $2.00 a litre again .
