MATARIKI 2024 ON PTV REWIND
@Damo Below is a mock programme line-up as PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) celebrates Matariki later this year.
Matariki is a significant event in the MÄori calendar, heralding the start of a new year and symbolising new beginnings and fresh opportunities. This year, on Friday 28 June 2024, the MÄori New Year will be celebrated in a special way on PTV Rewind.
This normally nostalgic channel, known for showcasing classic shows from the golden age of television, will be dedicating an entire evening to Matariki with two entertainment specials and a drama - all with a MÄori theme and sourced from the TVNZ archives.
HOWARD MORRISON SPECIAL
The first programme to screen at 7.30pm will be the Howard Morrison Special, originally shown on TVNZ in 1982 and recorded in front of a live audience at Hamiltonâs Founders Theatre, a landmark that was sadly closed in 2016 due to safety concerns. Sir Howard Morrison, a legendary entertainer who was knighted in 1990 and passed away in 2009, will take centre stage accompanied by The Yandall Sisters and a 35-piece orchestra. The concert will feature some of Sir Howardâs most iconic songs, including âBegin the Beguineâ, âMori the Horiâ and his hit single âWhakaaria Mai (How Great Thou Art)â. This is a rare opportunity to see the late great Sir Howard, showcasing his talent and charisma.
PRINCE TUI TEKA
Next up, at 8.30pm, is the Prince Tui Teka show, originally broadcast in 1983. This variety extravaganza will feature performances from Tuiâs wife Missy, Te RĆpĆ« Manutaki (winners of the 1983 Polynesian Festival) and four sisters from Tokomaru Bay who made their television debut at the time. They will be singing Tuiâs hit song âE Ipoâ which pays tribute to the MÄori lyricist Ngoi PÄwhairangi, known for her contribution to the iconic song âPoi Eâ. This special will also be a tribute to those who have since passed away, including Tui and Missy as well as Ngoi PÄwhairangi herself. It will be a night of celebrating MÄori talent and remembering those who have contributed to our rich cultural heritage.
THE PROTESTERS
To cap off the evening at 9.30pm, PTV Rewind will be screening the drama The Protesters, originally shown as part of TVNZâs Loose Enz series in 1982. This thought-provoking, one-off play explores issues of race and land ownership in the aftermath of the controversial 1981 Springbok Tour and Bastion Point. As a group of MÄori and PÄkehÄ protesters occupy ancestral land that the government wants to sell, tensions rise and debates ensue about the best course of action. The all-star cast - including Jim Moriarty, Don Selwyn, Merata Mita, Billy T James and Anzac Wallace, among others - deliver powerful performances, delving into the complexities of race relations and the impact of colonialism, although, sadly, some of the cast are no longer with us.
This special Matariki celebration on PTV Rewind not only pays tribute to the past but also acknowledges the importance of this event in MÄori culture. It brings together iconic MÄori entertainers, showcases traditional songs and dances and also sparks thought-provoking conversations about our shared history. It is a reminder that Matariki is not just a time of celebration, but also a time for reflection and understanding.
So mark your calendars for Friday 28 June 2024 and tune in PTV Rewind in celebrating Matariki. Enjoy a night of nostalgia and MÄori culture as we pay tribute to our rich heritage and look towards a brighter future.
MÄnawatia a Matariki - let us all celebrate and cherish this special occasion with PTV Rewind.
INDEPENDENT RADIO SERVICE (IRS) - UPDATE 2
Below is a mock update on how the Independent Radio Service (IRS) works as a complement to my dream television network and as a commercial radio business.
The Independent Radio Service (IRS) is New Zealandâs newest commercial radio network, broadcasting on more than 200 frequencies nationwide and streaming online.
With a strong presence in both urban and rural areas, covering all major cities and towns across the country, we at the IRS offer a mix of music, news, sport and talk. Consequently, catering for a broader spectrum of listeners from North Cape to the Bluff.
One of our main strengths is our music programming. With six different music brands under our portfolio, we cater for every genre and era. QFM is the go-to brand for all the latest and hottest hits, from Top 40 to hip hop, RnB, dance and electronica. Heavy FM, on the other hand, caters for die-hard rock fans and plays the loudest rock music. Double X is the perfect brand for âtodayâs best music mixâ while Lite FM provides a more relaxed atmosphere with easy listening tunes. Country FM is the go-to brand for country music lovers, while Vintage FM takes its listeners on a trip down memory lane with hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s.
Apart from our excellent music programming, we also offer two talk brands to keep our listeners informed and entertained. TalkNZ is the leading source for news, current affairs and open-line talkback, allowing us as New Zealanders to voice their opinions on important issues. SportNZ, on the other hand, is New Zealandâs newest home for sport, racing and rural content.
RADIO+ is our online streaming platform. With an easy-to-navigate website and mobile app, listeners can access all the IRS brands (including online-only stations) and their favourite shows and original podcasts from anywhere and at any time. This added convenience makes us a top choice for listeners looking for quality programming on the go.
What sets us apart is our commitment to region specific content. We pride ourselves on being a truly New Zealand-owned and operated radio business, with Double X, Lite FM and TalkNZ broadcasting their local shows and local news bulletins from various locations across the country. This allows us to connect with the local communities and provide them with content that resonates with their interests and concerns.
We also support local talent by providing a platform for up-and-coming artists to showcase their music. We often promote new music from local artists and organise events to showcase their talent. This support for the local music industry is a significant boost for the New Zealand music scene.
In addition to our entertaining and informative programming, we at the IRS play an essential role in shaping the countryâs cultural landscape. Our shows and music selection reflect the diverse cultures and interests of every New Zealander, promoting unity and inclusivity.
As famously stated by S Club 7, âReach for the Starsâ â and let the IRS be your celestial compass!
QFM is the flagship brand of the IRS, offering a wide range of Top 40 hits, entertaining DJs and the latest gossip from the world of pop culture. With a mix of chart-toppers, throwback tunes and new releases, QFM has something for the younger generation.
QFM XTRA is an extension of the QFM brand, catering for the urban youth with the biggest hip hop and RnB tracks. This station also features popular mix shows and interviews with renowned artists, making it a popular choice among young Kiwis.
For those who love to groove to the beats of dance and electronica, QFM Dance is the perfect station. A mix of popular and underground tracks, this station is dedicated to showcasing the best in EDM.
Heavy FM is a rock loverâs paradise, playing everything from classic rock anthems to the very latest rock tracks. This network brings bloody decent rock music to Kiwi rock fans, making it a go-to station for anyone who loves headbanging to some killer guitar riffs.
Double X is a hot adult contemporary music station with a diverse playlist of âtodayâs best music mixâ, i.e. more music and more variety. With a focus on Kiwi families, this station also features local shows and hosts from different regions across New Zealand, making it a truly national platform.
Lite FM caters for those who prefer mellow and easy-listening tunes. Playing hits from the 70s, 80s, 90s and now, this station is perfect for days when you just want to relax and unwind with some good music.
Country fans have a special place in the IRS with Country FM, a station that is devoted to playing nothing but the best in classic and contemporary country music. From old-time classics to the latest country hits, this station has it all.
For those who love the nostalgic feel of oldies music, Vintage FM is the station to tune into. Playing the greatest hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s, this network is a trip down memory lane for the baby boomer generation.
TalkNZ is the IRSâs nationwide news and talk network, offering a distinctive combination of the latest news, current affairs and open-line talkback. By inviting us as Kiwis to share their opinions on the issues that matter to them, TalkNZ fosters a space for intelligent talk, robust discussion and controversial debate. Itâs âleading New Zealandâs conversationâ.
SportNZ serves as the IRSâs nationwide sport and racing network, offering a range of up-to-the-minute sport radio programmes with the latest news, results, interviews and analysis, plus live commentary by the countryâs renowned sportspeople and broadcasters, to keep its fans engaged. Embracing the diverse interests of all New Zealanders, SportNZ dedicates a significant portion of its platform to rural news, providing dedicated insights and valuable information tailored specifically for farmers and the rural community.
RADIO+, the IRSâs digital platform, offers live streaming of all its existing brands and online-only stations. It also features original podcasts and audio content, such as âbest ofâ highlights, interviews and more. This platform allows listeners to access their favourite stations and content anytime and anywhere via radioplus.co.nz and the RADIO+ app.
Nearly all of the IRSâs music brands are loosely based on The Edge, Mai, George FM, The Rock, More FM, The Breeze and Magic (in real life), whereas the name âDouble Xâ is a homage to the Whakatane-based Radio 1XX (also in real life). The IRSâs talk brands, on the other hand, are loosely based on Newstalk ZB and the now-defunct Radio Sport. Let me know your thoughts and feedback⊠if you can.

ALL BLACK RUGBY ON PTV
@NuStraya Below are the mock details regarding the All Blacksâ upcoming test matches against England which, in real life, broadcast live on Sky.
The All Blacks, led by new coach Scott âRazorâ Robertson, will face England in a two-test Steinlager Ultra Low Carb Series in 2024. This series marks a return to the competitive rivalry between these two rugby giants, with the two teams last meeting in a three-test series in 2014, which the All Blacks won 3-0.
The 2014 series was a part of the IRB (now World Rugby) global rugby calendar that concluded in 2019. Englandâs 2014 tour also included a mid-week match against Super Rugby side, the Crusaders, ahead of the final test in Hamilton and a traditional match against the Barbarians at Twickenham. The three tests in 2014 saw the All Blacks outscore England 84 points to 55.
The 2024 Steinlager Ultra Low Carb Series will consist of two tests with the first kicking off at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on Saturday 6 July. The second test moves to Eden Park in Auckland the following weekend, on Saturday 13 July.
PTV and PTV+ will provide full live coverage of both tests with a live build-up commencing at 6pm, followed by kick-off at 7pm. Kirstie Stanway will present the coverage, joined by former All Blacks Sir John Kirwan and Mils Muliaina as co-hosts. Commentary will be provided by Grant Nisbett, Justin Marshall and Jeff Wilson.
To accommodate the All Blacksâ test coverage, the weekend edition of PTV News will move to the earlier time of 5.30pm and the live Lotto draw will screen during half time of the matches.
THE GATES ON PTV PEACH IN 2025
@TV4 Below is a mock programme announcement, although it is inspired by actual events.
Get ready for a fresh wave of drama on daytime television - The Gates, a brand new US soap centred around a wealthy black family living in a prestigious gated community, is set to premiere on the CBS network in January 2025. New Zealanders will be able to follow the drama a month after its US premiere on PTV Peach, adding to the channelâs already impressive line-up of daytime soaps.
This groundbreaking new series is the brainchild of Michele Val Jean, a veteran writer with over 2,000 episodes of daytime dramas under her belt, including multiple Daytime Emmy and WGA Awards for her work on The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital. Joining her as executive producers will be Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner, a powerhouse team bringing their expertise to this exciting new venture.
The Gates marks a significant milestone for daytime television. Itâs the first daytime soap on US television to feature an entirely African American cast since Generations in 1989 and the first new daytime soap to debut on a major US network since Passions in 1999. This long awaited representation of black wealth and family dynamics promises to attract a diverse audience and explore themes of identity, class, power and love within a compelling narrative.
Back home, we at PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) are thrilled to bring The Gates to Kiwi screens in 2025 and add it to PTV Peachâs daytime soap line-up which includes The Young and the Restless, Days of Our Lives, General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful. The inclusion of The Gates further strengthens PTV Peach and its commitment to providing its target audience (25-54 year old females) with a diverse and captivating range of female skewed programming. For viewers who prefer to watch online, all five soaps will be available to stream on PTV+.
Prepare to be captivated by the drama, the romance and the intrigue as The Gates opens its doors to a world of wealth, privilege and the messy complexities of family life. This groundbreaking series is set to become a must watch for daytime drama fans worldwide.
CHANGE OF COLOUR THEMES FOR PTV SHAKE, PTV SHAKE EXTRA & PTV GOLD 2
@greenpea @NuStraya @TV4 Below are the mock details.
PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) announced today that due to unforeseen circumstances, the colour themes for PTV Shake and PTV Shake Extra have been swapped and a new colour theme for PTV Gold 2 has been adopted. The changes are aimed at better reflecting the unique programme format of each channel and improving the viewing experience for audiences.
PTV Shake, the networkâs general entertainment channel for 18-39 year olds, has a diverse mix of dramas, comedies, animations, realities, movies, sport and daytime kids and youth programming. Its supplementary channel, PTV Shake Extra, offers an extended range of content, including timeshifted programmes and additional content that did not fit on the main channel. Both channels maintain their original programme formats and target audiences but their colour themes have been swapped; PTV Shake now features a bold red theme while PTV Shake Extra has taken on an energetic orange theme.
The update is expected to create an even stronger, more cohesive brand identity for PTV Shake, allowing viewers to easily distinguish it from its supplementary channel, PTV Shake Extra. The vibrant new colours are ideal for attracting and engaging the target demographic, further highlighting PTV Network New Zealandâs commitment to catering for young Kiwisâ desires and preferences.
In addition to the colour swaps in the PTV Shake channels, PTV Network New Zealand has also unveiled a new colour theme for PTV Gold 2, a supplementary channel that complements the PTV Gold brand. With a focus on the baby boomer market (50+), PTV Gold delivers a range of classic and contemporary television through quality British dramas, entertainment, classic movies, thought-provoking documentaries, factual programmes and arts content. PTV Gold 2, functioning as an extension of the PTV Gold brand, offers timeshifted content and additional programming that may not have found space on the main channel.
While PTV Gold maintains its original yellow theme, PTV Gold 2 now sports a dark yellow theme. This colour shift is designed to help differentiate between the two channels which share a similar programme format and target audience while still visually linking them to the overall PTV Gold brand. The new dark yellow theme better represents the channelsâ prestige programming appeal and adds a touch of sophistication for the discerning older PTV Gold viewer.
This strategic move by PTV Network New Zealand to revamp and refine its colour themes will not only benefit audiences by providing a clearer brand identity but it will also contribute to the networkâs overall growth and success as it continues to cater for diverse viewer tastes and preferences.
The colour themes for other PTV Network New Zealand channels remain unchanged.
MATARIKI 2024
@Horomono @TV4 Hereâs a mock logo of PTV Network New Zealand as it celebrates Matariki in 2024, followed by a mock description.
As we approach Matariki, the MÄori New Year, on Friday 28 June 2024, it is worth considering how our cultural symbols and celebrations can be incorporated into day-to-day life, including in business and the media. This post explores the possibility of PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) adopting a Matariki themed symbol, in a similar vein to the BNZâs Matariki design which was introduced last year.
A Matariki themed symbol could be similarly meaningful and impactful. Given that Matariki is not only the seven sisters but also the broader cluster of stars, PTV Network New Zealand could incorporate nine stars into its design. This would recognise the additional stars that are sometimes included in the Matariki cluster, emphasising the broadcasterâs commitment to inclusivity and unity.
The design could be integrated into the logo or branding, creating a visually striking and culturally relevant symbol for the broadcasterâs operations in our country. By embracing a Matariki themed symbol, PTV would not only be acknowledging the significance of Matariki to New Zealandâs MÄori culture but also communicating its dedication to promoting unity and interconnectedness.
This design could be seen as a symbolic representation of the networkâs mission - to connect New Zealanders and bring them together through shared experiences and stories. The Matariki themed symbol would underscore PTVâs commitment to celebrating our nationâs diversity and promoting a sense of unity.
The adoption of a Matariki themed symbol by PTV Network New Zealand would also resonate with the broader cultural shift towards recognising and acknowledging MÄori culture and heritage. With Matariki now an official public holiday, it is increasingly important that businesses, institutions and real-life media organisations incorporate cultural symbols and celebrations into their operations and branding.
Ultimately, PTV Network New Zealandâs adoption of a Matariki themed symbol would be more than just a design choice - it would be a powerful statement about the broadcasterâs commitment to celebrating and honouring MÄori culture and heritage. By embracing Matariki, PTV Network New Zealand would be recognising its importance to our identity and showcasing its dedication to bringing us as New Zealanders together.
INTRODUCING SUPERTEXT
@NuStraya @greenpea Below are the mock details regarding the new version of a now defunct teletext service.
In the annals of technological innovation, few inventions have captured the imagination quite like the internet. But before the World Wide Web, there was a humble technology known as teletext, often hailed as its forerunner.
The teletext standard, dating back to the 1970s, utilised spare capacity in the analogue TV signal to transmit text and low resolution graphics, displaying them as âpagesâ on suitably equipped television sets.
The pioneers of this groundbreaking technology were the BBCâs Ceefax and ITVâs ORACLE, both launched in Britain in the mid to late 1970s. Teletext then made its way across the globe, reaching New Zealand in 1984. The service, simply known as Teletext, was introduced by TVNZ, marking a significant milestone in the history of New Zealandâs media landscape.
Fast forward to the present day and the teletext legacy lives on in the form of Supertext. Managed by PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster), Supertext is an ongoing tribute to TVNZâs defunct teletext service which ceased transmission in 2013.
As a non-commercial operation Supertext is powered by teletext software, drawing resources from PTV News and Current Affairs, PTV Sport and various information suppliers such as RNZ, AAP, Reuters, MetService and more. The initiative is sustained by an in-house team of dedicated writers and contributors.
Just as its predecessor did, Supertext offers a diverse range of content for its users. The platform provides the latest national and international news, a comprehensive sports section, weather and travel information, financial market updates, television listings and a plethora of other engaging content.
For those curious about this innovative platform, more information is available at ptv.co.nz/supertext. The site offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of teletext while providing a wealth of information and resources for users.
Supertext is a window into the past, keeping the spirit of teletext alive for a new generation of internet users. And while technology continues to evolve, Supertext serves as a reminder of innovations past and their significant role in shaping the digital world we know today.
Please note that the mock information is inspired by a British based teletext service known as Webfax. It is operated by The TV Room and Nathan Dane/NMS as a homage to the original teletext services, providing the latest news and television listings.
seems like a very redundant service?

is this the same glimpse as the other day, that now seems to have gone? or are there more changes?
Yes. New programmes are added (e.g. At the Movies, Click, Paddy Gower & Company, This Week in America etc) while others remain exactly the same, even though some of the proposed presenters have changed due to unforeseen circumstances.
I also introduced timeshifted replays of Early Sunrise, PTV News at Noon and PTV News First on PTV Gold as a means of providing us as New Zealanders with greater flexibility. These replays are delayed by only 90 minutes, allowing viewers to catch up on any missed news from New Zealand and around the world.
For instance, if someone missed Early Sunrise at 5.30am on PTV then they could watch a replay of that bulletin on PTV Gold at 7am. They could then switch back to PTV for Sunrise or stay on PTV Gold for other programming, such as a classic US sitcom like Bewitched at 7.30am with a BBC News bulletin (recorded off the satellite from London just a few hours ago) to follow at 8am.
Similarly, PTV News at Noon and PTV News First screen at 12pm and 4pm on PTV and are then replayed on PTV Gold at 1.30pm and 5.30pm respectively. This provides Kiwi audiences with an option to catch up on any missed news at their convenience.
For those with hectic schedules who might miss the 6.30pm news, a âsecond editionâ of PTV National News is available at 8pm on PTV Gold (right after Coronation Street), allowing them to catch up on the important national and international news of the day, along with the latest updates on any developing stories that occur during the evening and a more comprehensive weather forecast than the 6.30pm bulletin. Nightline covers the major stories in more detail on PTV at approximately 10.30pm.
Please note that the 8pm bulletin on PTV Gold is live to air and not a replay!
You know you can edit existing posts, or just give the updates. You donât need to delete what youâve already written and post the whole thing again.
Thanks for the heads up.
Would you say your programming is a bit unrealistic given the current state of news and current affairs in New Zealand?
