PTV Network New Zealand & Independent Radio Service (Patrick Te Pou Broadcasting Ltd)

@PaddyTePou, your diagrams are very well labeled. However, I agree with @SA_TV that they are not essential to the text. They do provide a visual aid, but they do not add any new information. Nevertheless, great work!

Thanks, @greenpea! I hope you’ve just enjoyed them.

My dream network’s news and current affairs programmes are intended for broadcast every day from Monday to Friday, but I haven’t forgotten the weekends!

The weekend edition of PTV News is divided into two separate bulletins: an early evening bulletin for 30 minutes at 5.30pm (instead of 6pm) and a late night bulletin (an update on the weekend’s news, sport, weather and, on Saturdays, the winning Lotto numbers) for 10-15 minutes at around 10.30pm – see the diagram below for an example of how the 5.30pm bulletin is being produced and broadcast on the weekend.

The 5.30pm bulletin opens with major national and international news stories. After the first commercial break, part two of the bulletin is devoted exclusively to sports news as greater emphasis is utilised. The national weather forecast is presented after the second commercial break and there is a news item to follow, and the bulletin ends with a recap on the main news headlines.

The reason why I had to have the weekend news scheduled at 5.30pm was to allow for Saturday evenings on PTV to be devoted to light entertainment through game shows, quizzes and talk/variety shows. Furthermore, live rugby (e.g. the All Blacks’ international rugby tests on home soil and the Super Rugby Pacific and Bunnings NPC finals) replaces PTV’s usual Saturday evening programming and begins with a preview show/match build-up at 6pm – just over one hour before the game kicks off (at 7.05pm).

On Sundays, a weekly regional current affairs/magazine programme screens at 6pm with a local talent/variety show to follow at 6.30pm and PTV Network New Zealand’s flagship current affairs/investigative journalism programme, 60 Minutes (at 7.30pm), leads into the Sunday night movie (at 8.30pm).

That’s not what I said lol, i was saying I don’t think a program like the news can be so heavily structured.

RUGBY WORLD CUP 2023 ON PTV NETWORK

@greenpea @NuStraya @Leotv @nztv @OnAir @Horomono @Trains_and_Sports @LiamP @TV3_NZ @TV4 Below is an updated version of the one I posted earlier.

In real life, Rugby World Cup 2023 will be shown on Sky and Prime later this year. But the question is, what if PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) covered this year’s Rugby World Cup?

Here’s a mock advertisement I made sometime ago, with ASB, Ford, Air New Zealand and Sanitarium Weet-Bix (the official partners of the All Blacks) as broadcast sponsors.

The catchphrase ‘Together we’ll bring the cup to your home’ is inspired by “United We Stand”, a song first released in 1970 by the Brotherhood of Man. It has been recorded by over 100 different artists worldwide and was served as the official song of the All Blacks’ ill-fated 1991 Rugby World Cup campaign.

Below are the mock broadcast times and real-life kickoff times for the 48 Rugby World Cup matches.

As outlined in the schedule above, all 48 Rugby World Cup 2023 matches would be ‘live and free’ on PTV+, PTV Network New Zealand’s streaming platform.

Its two linear channels, PTV and Bold, would broadcast live coverage of the 16 matches, with Bold broadcasting delayed coverage of the other 32 matches from breakfast (e.g. 7am). Every New Zealand match at the pool phase and knockout phase of Rugby World Cup 2023 would be ‘live and free’ on PTV.

As well as showing delayed coverage, Bold would show the three French matches at the pool phase and the Japan v Samoa match ‘live and free’.

Below are the common questions.

Live matches (across PTV, Bold and PTV+) would run uninterrupted but the commercial breaks would only screen prior to the start of the game, during half time and after the final whistle, just like the All Blacks’ international rugby tests and the Super Rugby Pacific and Bunnings NPC finals on PTV.

Delayed coverage and full replays on Bold would screen commercial breaks throughout, and all on-demand replays via PTV+ would contain ads as PTV+ is a free service.

A subscription to PTV+ Premium, the advertising-free version of PTV+ (unlike TVNZ+ and ThreeNow in real life) would be required in order to watch full Rugby World Cup 2023 replays and other on-demand content without commercial interruption.

As a paid subscription service PTV+ Premium would also allow its subscribers to download all on-demand content to their smartphones and tablets for offline viewing, and get thousands more hours of content (including the best of HBO, Showtime, FX, AMC, Disney+, Netflix and Prime Video through licensing agreements) by upgrading to a Deluxe subscription.

PTV+ Premium would be available as Basic ($19.99 per month or $199.99 per year) or Deluxe subscriptions ($44.99 per month or $449.99 per year), and viewers could cancel their preferred subscription at any time.

What do you think?

Looks good - are you taking the world feed Paddy?

Yes, @OnAir - the world feed would be carried during the live streaming of all 48 Rugby World Cup matches and delayed coverage of the other 32 matches on one linear channel (but not the main linear channel).

The 16 live matches, as broadcast on the two linear channels, would be called locally by a dedicated NZ commentary team (similar to Sky in real life). They would cover the opening match (France v NZ), the NZ and French matches at the pool phase, the Japan v Samoa pool match and the knockout phase (quarterfinals, semifinals, third place match and final).

NEW TE REO MĀORI NAME FOR PTV NETWORK NZ

@OnAir @Korero @Horomono Below are the mock details.

Matariki - he whetĆ« pÄ«ataata tohu tÄ«matanga mƍ te iwi Māori uri rangatira iwi ariki. (Matariki - a glowing and shiny star symbolising the beginning of the Māori race of noble descent.)

To celebrate Matariki (the Māori New Year), I came up with a new te reo Māori name for PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster): Te Ao Pātariki o Aotearoa.

I have to advise you that, unlike the real-life Whakaata Māori (Māori TV), PTV Network New Zealand/Te Ao Pātariki o Aotearoa is NOT an indigenous broadcaster.

It is a New Zealand-based mainstream broadcaster that has a commitment to maintaining a presence of a significant Māori voice in programming across PTV Network’s linear television and and digital platforms (e.g. news, current affairs, live sport commentary, documentaries etc) - not just for Māori but for all New Zealanders as well.

I started weaving te reo Māori into my mock graphics and website snapshots via Microsoft PowerPoint in an effort to share the language with as many New Zealanders as possible. (Six60 had hit out at rightwing commentator and Sky News Australia presenter, Rowan Dean, who highlighted the band’s use of te reo Māori in tour posters in November last year, although this is off-topic.)

Without further ado, that’s all for now.

Mānawatia a Matariki = Celebrate Matariki!

JOHN CAMPBELL TO PRESENT NIGHTLINE

Below is a mock press release, although, in real life, John Campbell is TVNZ’s chief correspondent and Tova O’Brien has recently joined Stuff following the abrupt closure of Today FM in March.

PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster) today announced that experienced New Zealand journalist and broadcaster, John Campbell, will be presenting Nightline from Monday 31 July.

He replaces Tova O’Brien as a result of public backlash.

In relation to the vacancy created by Tova’s departure, a PTV Network spokesperson says “clearly we have listened to our viewers who have been emphatic about their respect and affection for John Campbell.”

“What is new to us is the tremendous rapport he has with most New Zealanders, so we are pleased to have John on board as presenter of Nightline.”

“He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role and will provide his audience with a serious current affairs examination of the important news of the day, similar to RNZ’s Checkpoint,” says the spokesperson.

John Campbell says he is looking forward to presenting Nightline from Monday to Thursday, and Rebecca Wright will take over on Friday.

Nightline will continue to feature a mix of current affairs investigations, background stories, studio interviews and overseas content via satellite, combined with a final wrap of the day’s national and international news. Janika ter Ellen and Laura Tupou will continue to present the late news segments on alternate nights.

Why?

Public backlash, i.e. negative comments from some members of the NZ public - that’s why.

Furthermore, I have just edited a portion of the mock press release in which I made.

oh right

what were they? and why did they warrant removing her?

also I don’t think it’s the sort of thing they’d refer to in a press release.

NEW PROGRAMMES FOR PTV NETWORK NZ

@NuStraya @greenpea @SA_TV @TV4 Below are the mock details.

Have had a tweak to PTV Network New Zealand’s (as a fictional broadcaster) existing News and Current Affairs output, which includes the addition of 60 Minutes: The Foreign Edition and three new programmes: Eyewitness, Newsround and Under Investigation.

60 MINUTES

PTV Network New Zealand’s flagship current affairs programme, 60 Minutes, will still consist of Garth Bray (from TVNZ’s Fair Go), Mark Crysell (from TVNZ’s Sunday), Paula Penfold (from Stuff Circuit) and Melanie Reid (from Newsroom) as correspondents, although they will be joined by award-winning journalist and investigative reporter, Michael Morrah (from Newshub).

The main 60 Minutes programme will still be shown on Sundays at 7.30pm on PTV and provide all New Zealanders with an engaging blend of human profile pieces, interviews and in-depth investigations nationally and internationally.

In addition, Michael Morrah will present 60 Minutes: The Foreign Edition which will be exclusive to PTV+ with new episodes dropping every Wednesday at 6.30pm. It will feature the best of international current affairs via the US and Australian versions of the 60 Minutes programme.

EYEWITNESS

PTV Network New Zealand is introducing a new, weekly investigative programme on Thursday nights (at 7.30pm) via PTV - moving the US sitcom Young Sheldon to its new home on Shake, the network’s youth-oriented general entertainment channel.

Called Eyewitness, I describe it as ‘a showcase for thought-provoking and in-depth reporting with a focus on investigative journalism from within New Zealand’. It is intended that each edition of Eyewitness will consist of just one story per week (compared to 60 Minutes which consists of three stories) and will be presented in an hour-long, documentary-style format, à la Assignment (which, in real life, aired on TVNZ from 1995 until it ended in 2002).

Seasoned journalist Rebecca Wright (from Newshub) will present the new programme, and the correspondents will include Jehan Casinader (one of the experienced and highly respected journalists in the country), Guyon Espiner (from RNZ), Ruwani Perera (from The Hui) and Shannon Redstall (ex-Newshub; now at Stuff).

NEWSROUND

PTV Network New Zealand’s twice weekly news and current affairs programme, Newsround, is based on the BBC TV format of the same name and geared specifically for tamariki.

Screening twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays (at 4.30pm) via Shake, Newsround is aimed at 6-12 year olds and presented in a child-friendly manner, making it easy for them to understand and to gain an interest in the news.

Andrew Macfarlane (ex-TVNZ) will present the new programme and the reporters will include Michael Cugley (from Te Ao Māori News), Tia McDougall, Emma Olsen and Mitch Redman (all from Newshub). The entire Newsround team will cover an array of topics which comprise news, sport, lifestyle and entertainment.

UNDER INVESTIGATION

Under Investigation is a new show that investigates crime in New Zealand. It seeks to solve crimes, uncover new evidence and hear from people who have never spoken publicly, while harnessing great knowledge and skill with exciting and innovative storytelling techniques.

Fronting Under Investigation will be Moana Maniapoto (from Te Ao with Moana) and the reporters will include Anusha Bradley (from RNZ) and Nick Truebridge (from Newshub).

This programme - i.e. an updated version of the original which, in real life, aired on TVNZ in 1994 with Sean Plunket as host - will be exclusive to PTV+ with new episodes dropping every Tuesday at 6.30pm.

You’re welcome, @SA_TV. By the way, the PTV News and PTV Sport websites were updated too. Like Newstalk ZB and the now-defunct Radio Sport (in real life), the news and sport are divided into two separate websites.

I describe the online home of PTV News, ptvnews.co.nz, as the website to keep news junkies in the know. The site encompasses the latest local, national and international news stories along with up-to-the-minute coverage, breaking news alerts, high-quality video clips and live streaming of PTV Network New Zealand’s (as a fictional broadcaster) daily news bulletins and selected current affairs programmes.

Also included are business reports, financial market information, weather forecasts and the latest stories in crime, politics, education, health, immigration, transport and much more.

For sports fans and punters, ptvsport.co.nz is the online home of PTV Sport and encompasses the latest and breaking news from the world of sport, plus in-depth analysis, live commentary on selected major sporting events, score updates, video highlights and racing information from the TAB (including race dividends, scratchings and results - updated daily).

Here are the mock snapshots of ptvnews.co.nz and ptvsport.co.nz respectively.
