@nztv Let’s move on. Speaking of consumer watchdogs, I have the possibility of bringing back a consumer affairs programme that acts as a rival to Fair Go (on TVNZ in real life) - Target.

With two 13-week seasons throughout the year, i.e. 13 x 30 min episodes, and a 7.30pm timeslot on a Thursday night (just before the US sitcom Young Sheldon which is scheduled for 8pm), Target is produced in-house by my dream television network and staffed by three reporters where they ‘investigate your consumer issues whilst keeping you up to date with the latest scams and advice’.

They are Mitch McCann (who, in real life, is currently based in New York and would be perfect as the host of the all new version of The Krypton Factor), Kaitlin Ruddock (from Fair Go) and Ximena Smith (from Te Ao with Moana and the documentary series, A Question of Justice, which aired on Prime last year).

It’s nothing to do with the catchphrase ‘Shame on you!’ (one of Target’s popular catchphrases from back in the day), but what do you think of the idea?

PTV NEWS CHANNEL CHANGES (aka MK II)

@Damo @greenpea @NuStraya @Trains_and_Sports @TBoy @Biscuit45 @McMuffinMan17 Since I updated the PTV News Channel’s schedule, everything seems to be getting mixed up.

Full-length (half hour) bulletins and short-form (5-10 minute) summaries of national and international news, sport, business and weather are now delivered every hour, on the hour (except 12pm, 4pm, 6pm and 8pm weekdays, and 6pm weekends, when the bulletins are being simulcast with other PTV Network channels such as PTV and GEM - subject to scheduling), to keep viewers informed and updated with the latest developments.

Each half hour bulletin typically begins with the important national and international news of the moment for the first half. After a commercial break, the second half of the bulletin begins with a headline summary; this is followed by a brief business update, financial market information and sports news. On the weekends, an extended sports update replaces the business and financial segments. The bulletin ends with a national weather forecast and a summary of the main headlines.

The 5-10 minute summaries, however, typically consist of the main national and international news stories in brief along with a sports story and a national weather forecast.

The ‘News Channel exclusive’ bulletins are researched, written, produced and presented by a dedicated team of journalists and broadcasters, in conjunction with the PTV Network New Zealand’s (as a fictional broadcaster) News and Current Affairs department. Because of limited resources, the bulletins are scripted from news supplied by the PTV News newsroom and a variety of wire services such as CNN, AP Reuters, ABC, CBS and the BBC.

The PTV News Channel team includes Sanele Chadwick, Heather Keats, Mark Leishman, Jared McCulloch, Trudi Nelson, Michael O’Keeffe, Brin Rudkin, Karen Rutherford, Marama T-Pole and Alice Wilkins.

BBC NEWS PROGRAMMING

In real life, the BBC’s two existing news channels (including BBC World News) were merged as one international news network known as BBC News. The merged channel launched recently and includes news from across the UK and the world.

The PTV News Channel now carries an overnight feed of the merged channel - i.e. every night from midnight until 5.30am on weekdays, and midnight until 6am on weekends.

BBC News is also available to watch on the PTV+ app and website, ptvplus.co.nz, as a 24-hour FAST channel.

In addition, the BBC’s current affairs-style interview programme, HARDtalk, is being broadcast on the PTV News Channel at 10.30am every Tuesday to Saturday morning. With presenters like Stephen Sackur, Zeinab Badawi and Sarah Montague, HARDtalk provides in-depth interviews with hard-hitting questions and sensitive topics being covered as famous personalities from all walks of life talk about the highs and lows in their lives.

BBC News at Six (6pm local time) and BBC News at Ten (10pm local time) continue to screen on the PTV News Channel as delayed telecasts, i.e. recorded off the satellite from the UK, at 9.30am and 3.30pm every day from Tuesday to Saturday.

REVISED SCHEDULE

Here is the revised and detailed PTV News Channel schedule with programme descriptions as shown below.

recorded American programs are ok for overnight filler but wouldn’t cut it during the day if there’s domestic news happening.

@SA_TV Unless interrupted by live feeds of breaking news events, both the CBS Evening News and ABC World News Tonight are recorded off the satellite from the US and broadcast in the early afternoon as delayed broadcasts (at 1.30pm and 2.30pm) with replays later in the evening (at 5.30pm and 6.30pm).

There are no plans to make them suitable for late night/overnight viewing, although ABC Nightline is shown at 11.30pm Tuesday to Saturday. The News Channel’s midnight-to-dawn slot is home to the merged BBC News channel as a live, overnight simulcast (via satellite from London).

All times NZT.

Yeah I know, I read your original post. I am saying showing recorded, foreign bulletins in daytime, let alone primetime, isn’t great programming for a domestic news channel.

What makes Independence Day a special movie for Easter?

@SA_TV Hrm. I don’t have a clue at the moment but it’s part of my dream network’s viewing highlights for Easter.

Meanwhile, there’s an Easter Sunday double feature (Rise of the Guardians and Ben-Hur) with a late movie (Straight Outta Compton) being scheduled after a 10 minute spot for the late news. On Easter Monday, there’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

For golf fans, there’s ‘live and free-to-air’ coverage from Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, of the 87th edition of the The Masters, one of the major golf tournaments.

Yeah mate I understand the concept of this thread. Just out of curiosity wondering why you, as the author of this, labeled it an '“EASTER SATURDAY SPECIAL MOVIE”

The reason why I had to describe the 1996 film Independence Day as an “Easter Saturday Special Movie” is to serve as a one-off special for Easter.

Pointless Celebrities or Tipping Point: Lucky Stars are usually intended for broadcast at 7.30pm on a Saturday evening, with the US dramas (East New York and Fire Country) to follow at 8.30pm. For Easter Saturday, I had to put Pointless Celebrities on at the earlier time of 6.30pm (replacing It’s in the Bag and Celebrity Wheel of Fortune) and then put a movie on at 7.30pm.

Saturday evening programming would return at their regular times the next week.

SHAKE EXTRA - FIRST WEEK’S SCHEDULE

Below is a mock schedule for Shake Extra, an extension of PTV Network New Zealand’s (as a fictional broadcaster) youth-oriented general entertainment channel.

As promised, Shake Extra focuses primarily on comedy and entertainment and is home to ‘extra’ programmes that cannot be fitted on the main Shake channel. The channel broadcasts every night of the week from 7pm until around midnight.

PTV Network’s children’s channel, Bubble, is on air every day from 5am until it closes down and switches to Shake Extra at 7pm. It is also known as ‘timesharing’, i.e. an individual bandwidth is shared by two separate television channels with their designated on-air hours. In Australia, for example, the real-life ABC Kids broadcasts from 5am until it switches to ABC TV Plus at 7.30pm, running through to around 2am (all local time).

CHANGES TO PTV NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS

@greenpea @NuStraya @SA_TV Below is a mock press release.

At PTV Network New Zealand (as a fictional broadcaster), we take our news seriously.

We want to know everything that’s happening at home and overseas, but there’s so much to cover that it’s best when our regional and national news bulletins and current affairs programmes are delivered around the clock on television and online. In fact, it gives us as New Zealanders a chance to tune in and stay informed at any time of the day or night.

So, we’re very excited to announce that from Monday 1 May 2023, we’ll be revamping some of our existing News and Current Affairs output. And in June, the PTV News Channel will receive a makeover with more news options for New Zealanders and a raft of original programming for the News Channel.

NEW FORMAT FOR 6PM NEWS

PTV Network’s flagship news programme, PTV News at 6pm, will expand in duration from 30 to 40 minutes from Monday 1 May.

The supersized 6pm bulletin will begin with the major stories of national and international agenda across two parts, with a commercial break in between. Part two of the bulletin will include a business news summary and a brief update on the financial markets, followed by a second commercial break, then a full report on the day’s sport. The weather forecast will be presented before the regional news opt-outs at the new time of 6.40pm.

The format for the supersized PTV News at 6pm will be structured like this (all times and segment durations approximate):

  • 18:00:00 (6:00pm) - Part 1: National and international news - 12 mins
  • 18:12:00 (6:12pm) - Commercial break - 3 mins, 30 secs
  • 18:15:30 (6:15pm) - Part 2: National and international news - 9 mins
  • 18:24:30 (6:24pm) - Commercial break - 3 mins, 30 secs
  • 18:28:00 (6:28pm) - Part 3: Sports news, followed by weather - 12 mins
  • 18:40:00 (6:40pm) - Bulletin ends; handover to regional news opt-outs - 20 mins

PTV News at 6pm will continue to draw on the considerable resources of PTV Network’s nationwide news staff and international partners via satellite, and will be produced and broadcast live from PTV Network headquarters in Auckland. Daniel Faitaua will anchor the bulletin with Andrew Gourdie reading sport and Jess Tyson anchoring the weather.

The half hour PTV News at 8pm will continue to be presented by the same team as the 6pm bulletin and screened on GEM every night from Monday to Friday.

The weekend edition of PTV News at 6pm will continue to be known as PTV Weekend News and run for half an hour, with a late night update for 15 minutes at around 10.30pm. The role of weekend anchor will be shared on a week-on, week-off basis by Janika ter Ellen and Laura Tupou, with Ravinder Hunia and Narelle Sindos alternately reading sport.

On public holidays and during the summer holiday period (including Christmas and New Year’s), PTV News at 6pm will be reduced to a half hour news bulletin with a late night update for 15 minutes at around 10.30pm.

NEW FORMAT FOR MIDDAY NEWS

PTV Network’s lunchtime news programme, PTV News: Midday, will go to air at 12pm Monday to Friday in a new 50 minute format from 1 May.

Presented by Amanda Gillies, PTV News: Midday will provide audiences with the most up-to-the-minute coverage of the top stories of the day and breaking news as they come in, along with live reports from around the country, interviews with newsmakers and in-depth analysis from experts in their fields, plus a comprehensive business report, sports news and the national weather forecast.

A lunchtime regional news bulletin from Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin will air at around 12.50pm (following PTV News: Midday) and run for 10 minutes.

Isobel Ewing will continue to anchor PTV News at 4pm in its usual half hour format.

NEW FORMAT FOR NIGHTLINE

PTV Network’s late night news and current affairs programme, Nightline, will air at around 10.30pm Monday to Friday in a new 40 minute format from 1 May.

Nightline will continue to delve deeper into the significant events and issues that matter to us as New Zealanders and combine a final wrap of the day’s news with current affairs investigations and hard-hitting newsmaker interviews, plus a first look at the next day’s papers to set tomorrow’s news agenda.

Tova O’Brien will front the programme from Monday to Thursday, with Rebecca Wright taking over on Fridays. Janika ter Ellen and Laura Tupou will alternate as anchors of the late news as part of Nightline.

A late regional news bulletin from Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin will air at around 11.10pm (following Nightline) and run for 10 minutes.

NEW LOOK FOR REGIONAL NEWS

On PTV Network’s main channel, PTV, local and regional news will form a significant part of the schedule.

PTV Network’s regional news programmes - Look North (Auckland), Waikato Tonight (Hamilton), Bay of Plenty Tonight (Tauranga), Spotlight (Wellington), Mainland Today (Christchurch) and Points South (Dunedin) - will move from 5.30pm to the new timeslot of 6.40pm Monday to Friday from 1 May.

Parochial and proud of it, each regional programme aims to provide audiences in the regions with a wrap of the day’s news, current affairs and magazine-style features, reflecting community life and people-to-people involvement, in a concise 20 minute package.

Carly Flynn will front Look North and cover Auckland and Northland.

Journalists Isobel Prasad and Sam Kelway, fresh from TVNZ’s news team, will front Waikato Tonight and Bay of Plenty Tonight respectively.

In the capital, Charlotte Cook will have Wellington and the lower North Island covered as presenter of Spotlight and Emma Cropper will present Mainland Today from Christchurch with Hannah Wilkins covering Otago and Southland as presenter of Dunedin’s Points South.

The evening programmes will be complemented with short breakfast bulletins during Sunrise (at around 6.27am, 7.27am and 8.27am), a 10 minute lunchtime bulletin (at 12.50pm) and a 10 minute late bulletin (at around 11.10pm).

NEW TIMESLOT FOR CAMPBELL LIVE

Campbell Live will move to an hour-long weekly format and a new timeslot of 8.30pm every Wednesday from 3 May.

Presented by experienced New Zealand journalist and broadcaster, John Campbell, the weekly Campbell Live will be an hour of studio-based current affairs and combine pre-recorded investigations and feature stories with live interviews and panels, where invited guests discuss the issues that affect almost every New Zealander.

The programme will also include regular contributions from Finn Hogan, Andrew Macfarlane, Michael Morrah and Ruwani Perera as reporters.

NEW LOOK SUNDAYS ON PTV

Sundays on PTV will undergo a complete overhaul from 7 May and start at 9am with a new, hour-long weekly programme called Sunday Business.

Presented by financial journalist Nicholas Pointon, Sunday Business is made specifically for business people and packed with a comprehensive review of the week’s business news from New Zealand and around the world, plus a report compiled by Australia’s Channel 9 financial reporter Chris Kohler, feature stories about key issues affecting the corporate sector and probing interviews with the business leaders.

Face the Nation will be changing its name to Meet the Press and moving to the new starting time of 10am.

Fronted from Wellington’s Avalon Television Studios by Tova O’Brien and Jenna Lynch, Meet the Press will feature live interviews with politicians and the newsmakers as well as lively discussions and informed analysis from a panel of invited guests and a review of the week in politics, economics and other key issues - all while looking toward the week ahead.

At 11am, a new Māori current affairs programme called Te Kāhu will replace Koha.

Presented by Julian Wilcox, Te Kāhu will take an in-depth look at the issues affecting both Māori and the wider community and combine field items with studio interviews, panel discussions and critical analysis.

To make way for Te Kāhu on PTV, its sister channel GEM will now play host to Māori programming from 9.30am-12pm every Sunday (replacing Gunsmoke and The Virginian).

Attitude, a documentary series for and about people with disabilities, will move to PTV and air Sundays at 8.30am. The Pacific news magazine, Tagata Pasifika, will move to Saturdays at 9.30am on PTV with a same-day repeat at 6pm on GEM.

A new locally produced magazine and current affairs programme called Open Door will air at 12pm with separate editions for Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Open Door will provide audiences in those regions with a weekly, community-oriented digest of people, places and events.

PTV NEWS CHANNEL

The PTV News Channel will have a fresh new look and format and offer viewers alternative options to PTV News and Current Affairs programming from Tuesday 6 June. Watch this space for further details.

I like the idea of the local news sharing the hour with the national news, but I wonder if it’d be better to have it start at half-past then return to the national news for the last ten minutes for a feature and the weather?

Wouldn’t work here but I guess in NZ it might.

@SA_TV Thanks for your positive response.

No plans at the moment but, once again, thanks for your suggestion.

Part three of the supersized 6pm bulletin, as outlined in the mock press release, includes the day’s sporting news and the weather segment (with separate presenters for sport and weather).

The weather segment (with a separate presenter), prior to the regional news opt-outs, would be structured as follows:

  • Same-day maximum temperatures
  • Isobars/satellite imagery/fronts
  • Next-day forecasts for all towns and cities nationwide
  • Next-day forecasts for Australia and the Pacific Islands
  • Extended (three day) forecast
  • Weather photo

Two weather photos are supplied at random by two different home viewers each night: one for the 6pm bulletin (nightly on PTV) and one for the 8pm/late bulletin (Monday to Friday on GEM, weekends on PTV). The PTV News team would invite viewers to send in their weather photos via email if they wish.

After the weather, the 6pm bulletin would be followed at 6.40pm by an 18 minute segment of regional news from Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, although the opt-outs would run for 20 minutes as outlined.

Once the regional news has gone out, the 6-7pm news hour would conclude with a short recap on the main national and international headlines for the day and a summary of the weather before PTV’s regular programming starts at 7pm with a five-nights-a-week game show.

The next national news, presented by the same team as the 6pm bulletin in a concise 30 minute format, would follow at 8pm over on GEM.
