Apparently Australian actors aren’t good enough to lead an Australian drama on an international platform.
Crazy I know.

One Night. A Paramount+ Australian Original Series Streaming Exclusively On Paramount+ From Friday, 1 September.
Paramount+ today released the launch date, official trailer and key art for its original six-part drama, One Night, a character-driven mystery about female friendships under incredible emotional and existential strain, from Easy Tiger and Motive Pictures.
Streaming exclusively on Paramount+ from Friday, 1 September, One Night was created and written by the award-winning Emily Ballou (The Slap, Taboo) and directed by Catherine Millar (The Twelve, The Secrets She Keeps) and Lisa Matthews (Doctor Doctor, The PM’s Daughter).
One Night is the story of three women whose bond was all but destroyed by the traumatic events of one night 20-years-ago.
Since then, Simone (Nicole da Silva) has harboured secret hopes of becoming a novelist but most of her haphazard attempts have been shoved into her bottom drawer. Now, at the age of 40, she has finally written the one story she could never get out of her mind, and her debut manuscript has become an unexpected overnight success.
But it soon becomes apparent that the devastating story the book tells doesn’t exclusively belong to her. At the heart of Simone’s novel is a tragedy which also happened to Tess (Jodie Whittaker) and Hat (Yael Stone), her two childhood best friends.
As it becomes harder to prise fact from fiction, one person’s memory and story from another’s, the book threatens to derail all their friendships, bringing old traumas to the surface of the small coastal community where they grew up, and stirring its perpetrators, who want to make it all go away.
Jodie Whittaker (Dr Who, Broadchurch), Nicole da Silva (Doctor Doctor, Wentworth) and Yael Stone (Orange is the New Black) lead an ensemble cast that includes Kat Stewart (Five Bedrooms, Offspring), George Mason (The Power of the Dog), Erroll Shand (Underbelly: Land of the Long Green Cloud), Noni Hazlehurst (A Place To Call Home, Fires), Tina Bursill (Doctor Doctor), William Zappa (The Dry, Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears), Damien Strouthos (The Twelve) and Jillian Nguyen (Barons).

One Night is produced by Easy Tiger’s Ian Collie, Rob Gibson and Ally Henville (Colin From Accounts, The Twelve) with Motive Pictures’ Simon Maxwell (The Woman in the Wall, Get Millie Black) and Sophia Mogford from Paramount+ as executive producer along with Harriet Creelman as co-executive producer. Written by Emily Ballou, who also serves as executive producer.
One Night is a Paramount+ Australian Original series with major production investment from Screen Australia in association with Paramount+. Fifth Season is handling international sales.
The latest Transformers movie just dropped on digital payment platforms, such as Amazon Shop’s ‘Home Premiere’ tile (exactly 6 weeks - the standard for this rights window) after theatrical release. It’s licenced by Paramount. Wonder when we can expect it to land for Paramount+ subs (presuming they don’t licence to another paid streamer)?
Do Paramount+ usually upload their titles relatively fast? Disney+ do, they seem to almost rush them to streaming ahead of any other window/above other revenue streams, although don’t they make some ‘premium’ where an extra fee is involved, I think they’re usually the ones that land concurrently with theatrical (like during COVID), not so sure now.

Paramount+ won’t survive.
It’s simply too small and is chicken feed.
Paramount Global has a market cap of only $10b which is fish feed to Comcast’s $190b and Netflix $190b
Look for it to be swallowed up by Comcast / NBCU or WBD (market cap $35b) in the years ahead.
That would mean 10 has a new owner in NBCU Comcast or WBD.
If it’s WBD the P+ brand will fade away and be folded into Max.
Paramount has the resources to continue P+, it’s just down to how they allocate them.
Market cap doesn’t mean anything, especially in WBD’s case.
Comcast would only be able to (potentially) acquire Paramount pictures and studio assets and not television (in both US and UK.)
Which we’ve seen the Disney/21st Century merger hasn’t delivered expectations.
All the inside talk is that Paramount Global won’t survive. It’s just too small.
Market cap means nothing?
The industry disagrees with you.
These companies need scale and size to compete with Netflix.
It’s Why Comcast Merged with NBC
It’s why Disney bought fox assets
Is why Time Warner was bought by Wb
It’s why víacom and CBS Merged
It’s why showtime is now a sub brand of p+
The smart money is suggesting Comcast will buy WBD or WBD will buy Para or Comcast buys para
If apple buys Disney - that will create a new scale unheard of.
I work in the steaming area - everyone is saying paramount won’t be around in a few years
Comcast could buy p+ but not CBS
At $10b it’s chicken feed money to eliminate a competitor. Alone Peacock won’t survive either. It’s tiny and losing hundreds of millions. Has no clear position in market
And then there is Hulu. Comcast could buy Hulu and p+ and combined with Peacock they would have scale to take on Max, Disney+, Prime and Netflix
Alone peacock can’t survive
Disney massively overpaid for Fox. That’s widely accepted now.
I’ve also been reading on puck that in 15 years NBC might be the sole linear network standing.
Isn’t paramount tied up with CBS?
Paramount owns CBS.
It’s more likely that NBCU will merge with WBD.
If NBCU/Comcast were to buy Paramount , they’ll have to offload CBS, due to ownership limitations.
Someone will buy up Paramount Global - it’s just so cheap
If they do - would be interesting to see if the Peacock brand goes away and Max lives on. Most likely.
Also - how many years till max makes its way to Australia and UK?
None of these are available in Australia yet. The streaming market here is saturated as it is, so it’s doubtful whether they can succeed, especially with Netflix, Disney + and Stan doing well.
I think it’s inevitable that Max will come to AU once WBD takes back the HBO programming from Foxtel. Same as UK and Sky.
Right now they make more money on-selling content to Foxtel then they would from having max in market and the considerable start up costs in getting up a new streamer in new market.
But in the years ahead as linear dies more and P+ goes away - I think Max will look to launch in AU and UK and go DTC - bypassing Foxtel and sky
