To commemorate the 50th anniversary in 2014, Seven replayed episode 383 - “The Assassin”. Made in 1973, it was one of the first to be produced in colour.

This was the introduction to that episode, presented by Daniel MacPherson

20 October 1958: ATN7 Sydney debuts its first breakfast session, Today, including Australia’s first TV “soapie”, Autumn Affair. 15 minute episodes at 8.45am on Monday to Wednesday mornings.

Autumn Affair later aired on GTV9 in Melbourne.

20 October 1973: ABC is the host broadcaster for the opening ceremony of the Sydney Opera House. The telecast is produced in colour for overseas screening (it was one of the first colour TV broadcasts in New Zealand) and archival purposes, but airs here in black and white. ABC’s coverage was simulcast through the commercial channels.

That evening, Four Corners was presented live from the Opera House — followed by the Royal Opening Concert featuring the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Philharmonia Choir.

The 0-10 Network also presented a 90-minute special broadcast on the night of the official opening — Mike Walsh At The Sydney Opera House.

When SBS showed the opening of Sydney Opera House during the first series of Australia in Colour last year, it had the black and white footage digitally coloured. Will it have been more cost effective to ask the ABC to provide the actual colour telecast?

Perth didn’t get a refresh until a few months later as it was O&O’ed by WIN at the time alongside the Adelaide station

Missed this yesterday

The Chaser’s notorious ‘Eulogy’ song. Personally, I didn’t mind the song, thought it was funny at the time.

Probably wouldn’t stand well in the PC environment we are slowly growing up in.

25 October 1980: SBS Channel 0/28’s second day of transmission includes a children’s variety show from Spain, La Sonrisa De Un Niño, made in 1978. As well as featuring Spanish performers the show opens with US teen pop star Leif Garrett.

Later in the night, a collection of comedy specials to have featured in the Montreux Comedy Festival.

Including To Norway, Land Of The Giants, featuring John Cleese,

and Slim Sala Bim, which is advertised above as Danish but was actually from Norway. But from what I’ve seen it’s little in dialogue and seems to be in English anyway?

Day 3 of Channel 0/28 features its first live sports coverage, a soccer game between Australia’s National Youth Team and Johnny Warren’s All Stars, followed by the Grand Final of the Philips Soccer League, live from Canberra.

Given the new channel’s coverage being just Sydney and Melbourne, its Grand Final coverage was shown in Brisbane on QTQ9.

In Adelaide, all four channels were busy with other commitments that afternoon (ABC had golf, ADS7 had Tennis, Nine had cricket from 4.00pm, and Ten had its annual Telethon all day) but NWS9 showed a delayed screening the following night at 10.30pm.

I don’t know about any regional broadcasts except that BCV/STV/GLV8 showed the Grand Final live on the Sunday afternoon.

EDIT: The Sydney Morning Herald did a positive write up of SBS’ sports coverage debut, including the commentary from Les Murray and Johnny Warren who showed they were naturals from day one it seems (although Les had been a commentator before when Ten had PSL coverage a few years earlier)
