26 August 2017 - The last time Ann Sanders presented a Sydney 6pm bulletin (for now at least). It was a Saturday night, and she was filling in for Friday-Saturday anchor Michael Usher.
29/8/2016 Edwin Daly becomes the first (and so far only) person to win $1,000,000 on Millionaire Hot Seat.
30/8/2004 ATN-7 moves their news operations into new headquarters at Martin Place, with Sunrise broadcasting from there straight off the coverage of the Closing Ceremony of the Athens Olympics. That evening, Seven News relaunches its brand.
30/8/2010 The X Factor premieres on Seven, after one previous season on Network Ten failed in the ratings in 2005.
29 August 1974: GSW-9 Albany begins broadcasting as a relay of VEW-8 Kalgoorlie. (one day late alright?)
30 August 1998: Prime Television New Zealand is launched, owned by Prime Television’s parent company Prime Television Limited.
29 August 2015: Racing.com (A Horse Racing channel) launches on channel 78 in metro places and channel 68 in regional places.
was also a joint venture with the Nine Network IIRC? or did Nine come on board later?
it was a relay from BTW3 Bunbury, not VEW8. But also AFAIK, GSW9 launched in 1968. I think there was a relay transmitter, GSW10, that launched around 1974. Is that the one that opened on 29 August?
EDIT: GSW9 opened on 23 August 1968. (Australian Broadcasting Control Board 22nd Annual Report, 1969-70)
From what I recall, RACING.COM had been running on the Seven Network multiplex in metro areas & regional Queensland as “RACING LIVE” for a couple of months beforehand.
The chopper intro was used in Perth until the 2010 revamp
Yep, later. It was about 2002-3 until 2006, when SKY bought Prime outright.
Relay station GSW-10 opened 29 August 1974. VEW’s relay station VEW-3 opened 29 November 1971.
The chopper opener was also seen in Sydney and Melbourne until early 2005, when the former launched that twisted metal set which was later rolled out around the rest of the country (sans Regional Queensland).
Wasn’t a fan of the East Coast twisted metal set in 2005.
Apparently from what I heard then-Seven News Perth director Shaun Menegola (now in the same role in Melbourne) wasn’t a fan of it either. Wasn’t implemented in Perth until 2010, a year before Adelaide and then Sydney switched to newer sets.
Perth was also the last of three markets (the others being Sydney and Brisbane) to introduce the blue TV wall set.
31/8/1997 Nine breaks into swimming coverage to announce the news that Princess Diana had been “seriously injured” in a car crash in Paris. This news update was anchored by Tracy Grimshaw.
Over on Seven, Peter Mitchell breaks the news during an AFL match that she had been killed.
Can you remember if Peter Mitchell and Tracy Grimshaw’s update aired at roughly the same time?
If they did, it wouldn’t have been a good look for Nine it they are saying she’s seriously injured, whereas at the same time, Seven are saying she died.
There’s videos of the news flashes 9 did throughout the day. Jim Waley did the early news flashes, I assume during and after Sunday went to air.
Then Tracey came on air and confirmed her death in the newsflash during swimming.
31 August 1998: Magda Szubanski, Marg Downey, Gina Riley and Jane Turner launch their new sketch comedy series, Something Stupid. It ran for six episodes.
Like Big Girl’s Blouse before it (1994-95), Something Stupid featured a series of sketches about suburban mum Kath Day and her daughter Kim, this time as Kim prepares for the arrival of her baby.
Source: TV Week
AFAIK, Something Stupid never got a video or DVD release (although Big Girl’s Blouse did) and I don’t think even got a re-run on TV. Magda commented on Twitter some time ago that she doesn’t recall where the tapes of the show ended up.
Magda before Kath and Kim
1 September 2002 - Channel Nine has relaunched its on-air presentation with the 7 colors/7 days ident. Sundays use red, Mondays use royal blue, Tuesdays use purple, Wednesdays use Orange, Thursdays use Turquoise, Fridays use Green and Saturdays use Yellow. This was the best on-air presentation look that many media enthusiasts has ever seen. As well, they refreshed its music theme.
September 3 1992 - Australia’s Naughtiest Home Videos by Doug Mulray, a one-off special went to air on the Nine Network. This show contained a lot of videos containing sexually explicit content. AFter 30 minutes, Mr Kerry Packer was not very happy about watching this show on his TV set. He was very appalled of what he saw and during the commercial break, he picked up the phone and furiously demanded Channel Nine to ‘Get that shit off the air!’ This show was replaced by a repeat of American sitcom, Cheers after the Naughtiest Home Videos. This show was cancelled before it was scheduled to air in Perth (due to time difference).
September 3 2006 - Channel Nine televised its final AFL match, Collingwood v Kangaroos (Aka North Melbourne) where the Pies won that match by 68 points. Tony Jones thanked Channel Nine’s AFL coverage after 5 years. (Channel 10 would then televise the AFL Finals Series).
